Oh Chile! The past week has been a combination of classes, going out, dancing, a birthday party, train down south, hiking, camping, and a bit of studying (finally) for my first test (today). Wednesday night I went to the apartment of a girl that Laura and Jack know, who is half Chilean so she had her own place and introduced us to some of her friends. After trying to figure out how to get everywhere, and then having to pay for public transportation all the time, it was GREAT to meet Chileans who can drive us around. We ended up going to a dance club all night- there are definitely some Chileans who are very, very well off.. one guy I was talking to had traveled all over the world and had been to NYC over ... read more

Today's our last day in South America! Before we get all teary-eyed we should talk about the great city of Santiago. We got here on Tuesday, having spent a lovely 6 hours on the bus re-watching the Matrix 2, Miss Congeniality 2 and half of the Aviator. We wandered round the city that evening and then booked ourselves into a Tango dancing lesson at the YMCA! Yep, that's right the Tango! The lesson was excellent. We didn't quite manage to get to the fiery passionate stuff you see in the movies, but we mastered the basic step which was 8 steps and pretty complicated. And then you do things like 2-1, 4-1, 5-3, 8-3. That's the lingo you see. Anyway I think we were pretty good for just one lesson, and he told us to keep ... read more

Hey Everyone, it´s wednesday im sitting in an internet cafe waiting for my laundry to be done. i am starving i´m going to eat something nasty after this. I haven´t writtien in a while because i´ve been down south of Chile with a group of 13 people or so, some nice so annoying. We went by bus to Pichillemu, Santa Cruz, Valdivia, Pucon, Puerto Varis, Puerto Montt and Salto ell Laja Waterfall. Sounds fascinating doesn´t it?! Well it was good but not great, I was expecting something else... as it so happenes we were on the bus A LOT, maybe 50 hours in total? Maybe more..? The towns that we did visit were very touristy and not really what I was looking for, i wanted the traditional, authentic side of chile, although we did drive passed ... read more

Arrived in Santiago yesterday monring. Sadly our bags did not and we still havent managed to track them down. Iberia suck. Called the helpline number continually but no one answers so we went to the airport today to see if we could find anyone, but it seems that the full staff of iberia go home at 3pm and as we got there at about quarter past there was no one to speak to. Hopefully we will have better luck tomorrow. The lack of luggage has sort of clouded our enjoyment of Santiago as well so far, we havent been able to do much sightseeing as we have no guidebook although yesterday we did get the metro to the Plaza des Armas which was alright, although we ate there and it was pretty expensive. The three distinguishing ... read more

Hello everyone! So here we are, in a new country again! From La Paz we headed down to Cochabamba, where we got tickets for the Manu Chau gig. The gig was brilliant, but we didn't really like Cochabamba. Firstly cos there was nothing to do there. Secondly cos all the restaurants were rubbish and called Dumbo. And thirdly because we had our first encounter with the local police as one of our bags was stolen in the bus terminal that morning. Luckily for us it only contained some clothes and towels and that was about it! Nothing valuable at all! All part of the fun though huh! So after Manu Chau, we headed further south again to Potosi, to have an adventure round the mines. Tour was brilliant and really interesting. Most of the miners only ... read more

The time has come now to move on and leave Latin America, leave behind the sweet language, the warm people, the rolling landscapes, the culture, the music, the many friends, the life... But not forever. Of this I am sure. Ten months of lucid memories I shall never forget. Ten months of noise and confusion. Ten months of ups, downs and travelling Euro-clowns. Ten months of vitality and jadedness. Ten months of breathtaking scenery and sprawling smog-laden cities. Ten months of plazas, the streets and latin beats. Ten months of drink, smoke, release and occasional detachment. Ten months of conversing with the same old questions from the same old faces. Ten months of enlightenment and song and admitting I was wrong. Ten months of backpacks, Gringos and staring out of rattling bus windows. Ten months of ... read more

Latest since the release of Jule Vernes "Around the world in eighty days" we know about that special day that you win when traveling eastwards around the world. You count you days by observing the continuous change of day and night while traveling. Finally you come back to the place you started from and if you counted correctly the folks at home will tell you, your journey took you one day less than you counted... How come? Imagine you do your journey in a very fast plane. The plane is so fast that you camo back on the same day...just imagine. Imagine you do your round the world flight in the morning, starting from Europe. While you are sitting in the plane and flying eastwards you observe the sun through a window. Above Europe you see ... read more

The last few days, i have been taking it real easy, just going for coffee, lunches, and beers. btw, you can order a litre of beer in santiago for i think 1 or 2 aussie dollars? anyway this place is cheap, cheap! ciggs are like 3 bucks too. unbelivable place. i love chile, there{s not much to do in santiago but see museums, so thats what i did today- today I went into the city of Santiago with an Irish surfer, a french guy and a english girl, we started after a big breakfast from 11am to 8pm, thats 9 bloody hours! We travelled around the city all day by foot and saw pre columbian museums and atrtifacts and a really excentric house which was made by the guy based on the french film the postman ... read more

Hey all, well.... its been a crazy couple of days, between getting off the plane, finding my hostel and sitting here at the cybrecafe down the road there has been many a confusing-exciting times. I´ll fill you all in on a few of the more remarkable events. day 1: once I´d settled into my first hostel "La casa roja" it was time for a feed. I found this funky little querky cafe, it was awesome, thousands of little bits and pieces of trash and treasure everywhere (no two things the same) and a very small place i.e. about 6 mini tables. So these cops turn up, one parks his horse out the front comes in and gets into a heated discussion with the owner, ten minutes later when i´d finished my empaladas(?) and my litre bottle ... read more

The flight was a grooling 16 hours sitting next to some unpleasant people, who happened to be on their honeymoon... but it was an easy flight, good food and I wasnt scared in the slightest. The best thing about the flight was looking out the window when we were approaching Chile. It was a magnificent sight, giant black mountains covered in ice, with even bigger mountains behind it. It was quite an awesome sight and one that really took my breath away, it made me remember why I was doing this trip in the first place. So as soon as I left the airport, hustlers started to approach me to offer me lifts, yeah right... I politely said no, and when they asked me again I pretended I was in some sort or foul mood and ... read more
