So, right now Santiago is rather Calor. Though, I have to say that last, what was it? Sunday? was menos mal than it has been for the past few days, as there was actually a breeze on that day. But for now, women are fainting outside of the Lider (the big supermarket chain here) and making it impossible to enter, apparently because of the heat. And on the crowded, airless Metro one day, my roomate almost fainted. And she´s from Arizona, so you´d think that she´d be pretty heat tolerant. But the meto does get pretty horrible during the business hours, with people squished up against the windows, like some kind of nightmare scene. You sort of sqeeze and push youre way in there when the doors open, knocking around businessmen and college students as you ... read more

Pinochet died yesterday. It was wierd because it was the same day that the group we traveled down here with left on their flight back to Cali. Alot of the streets were closed, and so we ended up being dropped off by the bus close to the hospital that he had died at. There were alot of people who had sighns and candles and were yelling things along the line of "Thank you, Pinochet!". So we went into that crowd, just to look around. It was really disturbing being inside of a mob of people who support a mass murderer, mass torturer, who stole rule of their country and made the poor poorer. I cant even imagine supporting someone who used torture against innocent people. And the wierd thing was that there was both old and ... read more

Well we returned from Easter island and got back to Santiago and our place to stay (not the balmy tropical island paradise of 8 hrs ago). This area is much MUCH nicer that the last time here, tree lined streets and less public displays of urination. It´s a wine tour by coach tomorrow (as Zoe´s had enough of bikes) so another early start and then a trip to the Chilean central valley. We´re going to Concha Y Tora(o) i´m not sure which but it´s well known at home as the Casillera Del Diablo wine. ........Well the wine tour was great, so we went for a walk on the way back and stopped at the main square, checked the site (thanks Pamela) but i was told we were in too much of a rush to update ... read more

It normally requires a lot to make me blush in the U.S. It may be the passionate expression used by Chileans that has influenced me to easily let that pink tint steadily climb up my face. Needless to say, I have blushed more in my 2.5 months in Chile, than I have over the past five years at home. It began with my endless battle with the word "alcachofa". Artichoke. Since day one of using that word I have only been able to produce "alfachoka", a variation of the original. It all came to a head on one of our visits to a favorite pizzeria here in Santiago, Cuidadano. I was ready. I practiced. The waiter approached, I made my attempt to order pizza with artichoke hearts, and failed. I could only say "alfachoka". I then ... read more

During our stay in Chile we stayed at a wonderful bed and breakfast in the heart of Providencia. Waking up knowing what delights were downstairs for our breakfast was enough to put a spring in our step! Although Santiago is not the most attractive of cities, it provides enough to keep two Scottish tourists amused. We spent a day touring two vineyards, sampling the local produce! Although not a great red wine drinker, I have to admit I was kind of hooked! Lunch was enjoyed with a rather eccentric English lady who decided to join us telling us about her church, her one kidney and being chased out of a Rio slum by some men with guns!! Our last day was spent on the coast in Vina del Mar, about 1 and half hours from Santiago. ... read more

"cajon del maipo"is wonderful looking vally. I want to climb more there. but not much topo. I need to go to someone knows a lot.

INVENTORY OF ONE MONTH IN CHILE Maraquetas eaten countless Resumes sent by email 40+ Flea bites 20+ Skype contacts 10 Interviews 3 Very much part-time job 1 Blockbuster Chile membership 1 Major life goal achieved 1 Stolen wallet 1 Despite having my wallet stolen yesterday, even factoring in the flea bites, I am weighing in on the positive here in Chile. I was daydreaming in a crowded part of Santiago. An hour before I left the last of the three interviews inventoried. During the interview I was hired and assigned two classes. One class consists of three nine year olds and in the other I will be tutoring a thirteen year old boy. It was not my intention to teach kids, but I accepted this work with the chance of acquiring more classes and the opportunity ... read more

So, after my arrival blog Santiago has turned into a fantastico place to be. Quite a lot of people have said they dont like the place but i love it. Very clean, freindly and easy to use and with as many universities as you can shake a stick at. Really i"ve not been in any other place on my travels thats turned up zero Starbucks and a pleathera of universities. I guess also the hostel im in helps a lot as there is always something going on and lots of new people to meet. After my day out as featured in the last blog my evening was spent chatting with various new best freinds which included some folks who persueded me at the 11th hour (literally, it was 11pm when i decided) to the next day ... read more

Dias Mio! My legs are tired. Have spent all morning walking around Santiago. Will visit a few museums after this then its on to Bolivia. Oh my god the dogs are crazy. I have some great photos and video footage of this one dog who guarded an intersection with his life, and I mean guarded it. He would sit in the middle of the road. Even with traffic bearing down on him, 3 lanes worth, he would not move. When the cars got close enough he would try and bite their tyres. Funny thing was he was very friendly to people.... he did this all day, in the ten minutes I watched he would have almost been hit 10 times. Ok, saw lots and lots this morning. Have lots of photos to upload, but unfortuantly my ... read more

This entry is frank and honest and may not be for the faint of heart (Mommycakes I´m referring to you.) Had I written this blog this morning, you most certainly would have received a bleak and even sad description of my state of mind. However, having just finished an excellent pasta dinner and salad, my first with lemon (Monica, me gusta mucho la ensalada con limon) I am able to tell the story of my arrival in Chile with a happier tune. But, let me not step ahead of myself. Many of you are wondering, Chile? But what of Argentina? While enrolled in my TEFL course this summer I spoke with a number of people who highly recommended Chile. I was not fond of the idea of living in a large city, Buenos Aires is one, ... read more
