We’re off on our travels again – this time to South America, starting in Rio de Janeiro. It’s a long journey; our first day, having already spent 2 hours on a coach, consists of 13 hours of flying plus 4 hours at various airports, finishing with an hour taxi ride. I have a heavy cold. I can think of better ways to spend the day, like tucked up in bed with a mansize box of tissues watching daytime TV. But at least everything is punctual and I get the chance the read the Tattooist of Auschwitz in one sitting. We fly via Madrid with less than an hour between flights. After landing, I see the old man get my bag out of the overhead locker, then we get separated by a crazy lady who decides to ... read more

Left the hotel today at 11:00 on the first uber we have ordered ourselves using the hotels wifi. The driver couldn’t speak English at all but it didn’t matter. Our first destination today was Brazil’s version of The National Museum of Fine Arts. Mainly Brazilian artists but we enjoyed our visit and we both got Seniors 50% discounts this time for just being over 60, so cost was only 4 Real each ($AUS 1.52). Once again, a marvelous grand old building. It was 13:05 by the time we left for the short walk to the Cathedral of Rio de Janeiro and it’s quite a spectacular modern building. We spent a short time walking through and taking photos before walking to the Lapa area where we had dinner last night with Pierre. Just around the corner from ... read more

We are getting use to South American time. Went down to breakfast at 9.30am and back to write blog before meeting with Pierre at 10 45am. We hopped into an uber to go to one of the areas that was redeveloped for the Olympics. Unfortunately most of the museums are closed Mondays (as usual) so we just had a walk around the new Museum of Tomorrow which is next to the Brazilian Naval base. The uber driver was a wealth of local knowledge and told Pierre to take us to the Church and Monastery of Sao Bento (St. Benedict) so we found our way there via an entry through a modern building and up a lift. The church is one of the oldest churches in Rio and looks fairly plain on the outside but what a ... read more

Earliest start yet, waking up at 4:15am to be ready for our booked airport taxi at 5am. Got down to the door at 5:55am and the driver was at the door as we opened it. The driver had no English but he already know where to take us and just needed to know which terminal. It was quite busy given the early hour but we had plenty of time and only waited a short time before we started boarding. The plane actually took off earlier than the stated time and we got to Rio much earlier as well. Breakfast was a pretty ordinary ham and cheese roll but we were so hungry it was sufficient. Our pick-up was waiting as usual and the guide spoke excellent English having lived in the US for a while. He ... read more

South America » Brazil » Rio de Janeiro » Ilha Grande October 15th 2018

Today saw us meet up with some new travelling companions as we join G adventures on a tour across Brazil, Bolivia and Peru. A good mi of Aussies, Swiss, italian, Israeli, Germans and brits.plus a Venezuelan tour guide , Francisco - a good guy. A gentle start with dinner in Rio then next morning a coach and ferry (well large motor boat) to our first stop, the beautiful sunny Ilhe Grande. Except the weather had turned and it was wet and cold ( well cold for here anyway). Oh and I managed to lose another sweatshirt on the bus. Next day we found a hike to a waterfall up some fairly good hills (128 stairs for those of you with fitbits) and worked up an appetite for lunch. Some of the guys went on a night ... read more

Hello Rio After an overnight flight it was great to get to the hotel and grab breakfast at Mama Shelter a quirky little hotel in Santa Teresa - good place to stay for our first four days and a little different. Santa Teresa is situated between a favela and downtown and as such has some characteristics of both - interesting buildings and great bars, very bohemian, but not the place to wander after dark (sunset 5.30pm). The first afternoon we did get out into Santa Teresa where we found great live music & dancing but heading back were advised by a local to go a different route as a couple of tourists were assaulted on our direct route back to the hotel only hours earlier. After 12 hours solid sleep we caught the tram downtown and ... read more

Here we are, back on the road after nearly 7 weeks at home! It's finally back to South America, a first for Tanya! My first visit to Rio de Janeiro was back in 2002. It was in July, and I was on the beach of Copacabana the day Brazil won the World Cup in Tokyo. Nothing of this in 2018 as Belgium beat them in quarter finals! That day back in July 2002 was crazy. I watched the match on the beach, with hundreds of foreign journalist crews...and when the match was over, I rushed to the Corcovado....to hear the city singing to their World Cup win....what a day, it was pure magic, and slightly insane too! Since 2002, I came back 3 or 4 times, but today it's a first for Tanya. This was actually ... read more

É a base.
