We got a 15 minute bus ride from Recife and just kinda spent the day in Olinda walking around this pretty little town which consisted of lots of churches, cobbled strets and carnival decorations.... read more

Carnaval is coming Carnival in Olinda and Recife is supposedly the third most important in Brazil. Some claim to fame after Rio and Salvador! However, we chose to come here as it is said to have a tradition and intimacy that Rio or Salvador lack. And, perhaps just as importantly, it is safer. We arrived in Olinda on the Thursday morning and after a bit of a walk, managed to find the house we were staying at. Like all the other Brazilian cities, accommodation rates skyrocket in Olinda around carnival. In fact, we couldn’t even find anywhere when we started to look about 3 weeks ago. Luckily, Lynne had been looking at an American bloke’s website, who calls himself the “gringo in Olinda”. His name is Ernie and he lives in Olinda with his Brazilian ... read more

It turned out that I couldn´t stay the extra day on the island. So yesterday, after a lovely day with George, Bruno, and Carol touring around to farms and eating with the same family as the night before: George´s friends with the five year old triplets; with sadness in my heart, I said my farewells to Gabi, the hero who saved me from the clutches of the evil Pousado N´Janda, Adrianna, the delightful, intelligent, and warm host, saviour of the local cats, then Bruno and Carolina, the charming and fabulous partners of George on the yacht. Finally, to my Anamcara, George, the inspiration for the ´rock opera´, an all around great bloke, a guy who I consider to be a true friend for me in this short passage we call our lives! What a fantastic last ... read more

Hello!! Left Salvador on the nightbus at 7pm! Richard decided he wanted to go to an island nearby, which I didnt really want to go to - Brazil is so expensive and we´ve been here nearly 5 weeks now so I decided i wanted to get a move on! Also, I really wasnt having much fun with Richard at all and wasnt enjoying being around him, found it quite hard work so decided i wanted to go off on my own again! The night bus was actually really nice - it was a really nice bus and we got snacks and blankets etc! There were tvs on the bus too - playing celine dions greatest hits video!! hehe!! At first it was a bit annoying as i was really trying to go to sleep and the ... read more

What a great couple of days I´ve had! Started meeting people finally that spoke a little english, which was quite a relief after a week of portospanofrancosign language. Oh to speak engloportospanofrancosign language again! So if Friday´s events were fun, Saturday´s were even more fascinating. Andre and Julio and I hit three more festas on Saturday, with me finally getting back to the pousada at 4:30 am all danced out! They had taken me to the local favella parties, the places that gringo´s don´t go unaccompanied, but with Julio and Andre I was given a ´free´ pass. What incredible scenes! I don´t mean my atrocious, though amusing, attempts to dance in the forro style. I must have snapped a few people´s toes in my clumsy eforts to blend. I´m meeting everyone at the parties, including Fernando ... read more

What a crazy night that was! Andre walked me down to the internet cafe, then invited me to join him for a party with some friends. Now if ´´Homeland Paci´´ had o´ been in town I probably would have said no. But it was just me, so I thought, ´why not?´ So about 1:00am we roll back to the Pousada, having been to four parties, each of them featuring live bands playing loud forro music, everybody singing along and dancing it up, three of the festas were in the streets, one of them a quasi political/ poetry ´do´ in the middle of Recife. At one point, I realized, while perched in the boys room, that if Andre disappeared with his amusing buddy Julio, I would neither have the means or the wherewithal to find my way ... read more

Backpacker heaven! We negotiated a price at the wonderful Casa Maloca which more than rivalled any hostel in town. Toni, the landlord, is from Slovakia but has lived in Brazil for 20 years. He looked after us very well and we were sad to only stay for 3 nights. The kitchen was fantastic and to eat on the veranda overlooking the skyscrapers of Recife was quite something. Actually, sitting there for breakfast was a particular highlight too, with more than enough fresh tropical fruit, delicious coffee, mango juice and hot German bread. Bliss!! You don't just go to Toni's pousada for the hospitality and the breakfast though, the whole house is an art gallery. He even has a print of a piece commissioned for the football World Cup which is an amazing work of art. The ... read more
