Dag 131. Turen kom paa 900 reais ... read more

Apologies for the lack of up dates since we left Rio a few weeks ago, the computers we have encountered have generally been throw backs from the dark ages. This first entry will run through what happened from leaving Rio through to Bolivia, and a second entry will run through Bolivia so far.... We left Rio and took a grueling 26 hour coach journey to Campo Grande in Mato Grosso do Sul, which is described as the 'gateway to the Pantanal', where we were going to embark on a 4 day / 3 night tour of the area. The Pantanal is a vast wetland spanning Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay, and to give perspective is roughly the size of France. We were looking forward to the trip greatly as the area is one of the best places ... read more

Brazil was not originally in our plans because of its sheer size we knew we were not going to get to see much in the time we had, plus we knew it was going to put us way over budget (and it did), but we were so close to the border at Iguazu that we could not resist. So we crossed over the boarder and went to the Brazillian side of the falls. Very impressive once again, much better view of the whole thing. After spending a few hours there we were dropped off at the bus station in Foz du Iguazu (Brazillian side) to catch yet another bus, this time to Campo Grande - our starting point into The Pantanal. The Pantanal The Pantanal is the world’s largest area of wetlands, although not too wet ... read more

We left Santa Cruz, Bolivia on July 17th by train to head to the border of Brasil. We boarded the train which took fourteen hours to reach the town of Puerto Suarez, Bolivia where we would cross into Brasil. I then headed to the border check point of Bolivia to get my exit stamp which should have been free but the man with the stamp told us it would cost ten bolivianos to get a stamp. We paid our blackmail money and got our stamp as the border man put the money in his own pocket. We then headed further on to the Brasil checkpoint where we showed our visas and passports and entered into the city of Corumba, Brasil. Now with the last border crossing done we headed to the Pantanal. The Pantanal is wetlands ... read more

So the plan was to see the Brazilian side of Iguazu for a couple of hours then head straight to the Pantanal. We left Argentina in the morning, got our tickets to the Pantanal city of Campo Grande and then headed to the falls. All was well until we got back to Foz Iguazu, we got on the local bus that took us to the Rodovairia (Portuguese for Bus terminal). Long story short, due to some language difficulties we ended up missing our bus and standing in a corn field in the middle of nowhere in the dark! We had to spend the night in a hotel near the station and leave on the 6am bus the following day, luckily the bus company took pity on us and didn´t charge us for a new ticket, but ... read more

After freezing our asses off in the Pantanal we got a minibus for six of us to Bonito. Bonito is a small town on the edge of the Pantanal about 6 hours drive from where we were. The road turns into a dirt track for about half the journey so we had to endure some bumpy parts. On arrival in the Hostel, first thing we all looked for were hot showers, we didn't smell that bad but four days without any kind of shower made us feel like the backpackers that we are. The hostel is really nice in Bonito, great friendly staff and a nice area to be in. The weather was still cold and we hadn't warmed up at all since the Pantanal, so you can imagine our disappointment when the showers were below ... read more

Tally ho and orf we go! We´ve had our fun in the sun and now it´s onwards with a proper slog through the middle of South America. It´s intrepid travel time again after all that fun & nonsense in Rio. As we all know, the middle of South America is a dark jungle where few men (or women) have feared to tread and those that have have quickly had their heads boiled in pots and eaten by terribly unsporting indigenous types, naked but for the feathers on the end of their spears. Ok, so maybe we´re 500 years too late for all that. The Incas have gone thanks to the generous gifts of disease and slavery brought over from Portugal and Spain, and all that´s left for us to contend with is a pair of increasingly ... read more

Our bus journey into Bonito was probably one of the worst we have experienced... not because it was uncomfortable or anything, but because we had 2 bus changes, then had to get in a small mini-van in the early hours of the morning for the final leg of the journey into Bonito... not the best nights sleep we have ever had! Anyway, Bonito itself is a small little town on the edge of Brazil´s vast wetland area called The Pantanal, and we stayed just a couple of nights on the way to The Pantanal itself, but having got here we discovered that there was some great snorkeling trips available in crystal clear rivers about an hours drive away. When we got to the area we first had a 1/2 hour trek through the rainforest before even ... read more
