Day 242 - Monday 19 May I'd managed to get 12 hours sleep in, but it was still only half nine when I woke up. With a few hours still to go, there wasn't much else to do but stare out of the window. Beats working I suppose and theres nice views of the countryside. It turns out the bus was running 2 hours late so in the end it took 23 hours to reach Campoo Grande from Rio although i've crossed a timezone somewhere as i've gained an hour back. As im only staying the one night I checked myself into the hostel directly accross the road from the bus station. At 25 Reis (8 quid), its the cheapest i've paid in Brazil, yet i've got my own room (fels like heaven), and a double ... read more

I just arrived in Campo Grande, a small city near the Pantanal. The pantanal is a big wetlands area with lots of animals. I´m going on a tour of 3 or 4 days there, and I don´t think I´ll write until I get back. Hopefully I´ll have lots of cool pictures after that.... read more

We left Ilha Grande on a Private boat, rather than the public ferry which we took to get there. When we returned to Angra Dos Reis, we had wanted to take a bus to Sao Paulo, where we could spend the night, but the next bus was sold out. We could have taken a night bus there, but we decided instead to push forward to Campo Grande, where we could catch a bus to Bonito, Sarah´s whole reason for wanting to come to Brazil. So, we set off from Angra Dos Reis to the town of Barra Mansa, where we would then transfer to a bus for an 18 hour ride to Campo Grande. As we only had sandwiches from a fast food place called MAX Burger to tide us over, we arrived very hungrily. We ... read more

I´m in Campo Grande in Brazil at the moment, whiling away the 8 hours between checking out of my hotel and getting the bus to Brasilia! (a mere 18 hour journey). So I don´t suppose I have any excuse for my blog not being up to date. I´ve just finished a 4 day trip into the Pantanal, where I saw toucans, very rare hyacinth mccaws, caimans, a tapir and the dreaded anaconda. But don´t think you get to hear about the exciting stuff first, you have to sit through everything else before we get to that. I think I last got fed up writing my travel blog round about Torres del Paine. While I was there I did a couple of walks of a few hours each - we hadn´t really been prepared enough to do ... read more

Well... those who didn´t think I (Alison) could have coped with 3 days covered in dust and being eaten alive by mosquitos were proved wrong this week as we headed out to the Pantanal (a swamp half the size of France and with more frogs suprisingly!). We went horseback riding (Katherine would be proud) through water up to the horse's neck and my horse turned out to be a bit of a nutcase! At first she was calm and followed the leader but then i had a race with an Irish boy and my horse decided that she was in control! I just clung on and tried to remember everything i know about horseriding (bugger all)!! But i squeezed with my knees and held on for dear life and somehow i managed to slow her down ... read more

First of all - check out the photos on my last blog, finally managed to upload some! So the samba club turned out to be great fun, although we left too early in my opinion!! We had a great view of the band and the dance floor. Managed to have a wiggle on several occasions despite being rammed in - well it was the last night of carnaval. The Big Yellow Truck I'm now actually on the road in my big yellow truck! There are 23 of us in total at the back of the truck, although it doesn't seem that many. The design of the thing is ingenious! We have huge lockers under our seats to store all our crap and then there are tons of other hidden compartments to take all the food and ... read more

... read more

Foz to Campo Grande on a bus, deep joy. Very interesting trip from the spectacular waterfalls at Foz Do Iguacu on an overnight bus to Campo Grande. A bus picked us up, took us about 2 hours away and left us at a strange roadhouse where they served a fantastic buffet for pennies. All was well until the bus cleared off and the place filled with strange looking locals. Fortunately our fellow passengers looked unperturbed and so we did like the romans. A different bus did return to get us eventually and I got to watch ´Flubber´ in Portuguese which was nice. There is absolutely nothing Grande about this dump. We have just spent the afternoon sitting outside of our hostel, directly opposite the bus station, watching the pickpockets eyeing up victims and lady boys parading ... read more

Now in Campo Grande after 5 excellent days in Rio. We arrived in Rio last Thursday after being run out of town in New York due to Lucys diplomacy. An interesting guided tour around the Lower East Side Tenement museum turned nasty when the camp dwarf who was guiding us innocently asked "When the men lost their jobs during the Great Depression, how do you think the wives helped the families get by?" There was silence amongst the group of the other 12 or so all-American tour group as they thought proudly about what their ancestors would have done in this situation - making clothes, perhaps just making the money spread further. The thoughtful silence was harshly broken by Lucy suggesting loudly "Prostitution!". Rio was great fun, we stayed at Ipanema and managed to hit the ... read more
