Having completed the 4wd crossing into Bolivia, spent a night in Uyuni, another strange kind of frontier town primarily used by travellers as a stop off before heading into or out of the country. Lots of strange statues in this town, which was freezing at night. Caught the worst bus ever overnight to La Paz with no heating, and our bags on the roof, it was a 12 hour journey incl. breakdown with no banos (toilet) or recognisable banos stops.... I felt very sorry for the female travellers. Arrived in La Paz the capital which sits in a basin with an amazing mountain backdrop, Cerro Llampu I think but don´t quote me. La Paz was slightly milder than Uyuni, and is a very busy if not dirty (the streets stink of urine). My arrival coincided with ... read more

We made it to Bolivia! Yesterday we did the 5 hour trip from Arequipa to Puno, Perú. Puno is at about 12,500ft , and boy did we feel it. On the bus ride our ears were popping and our heads hurt a bit, but nothing too serious... we were too busy enjoying the beautiful sights of the countryside. The minute we stepped off the bus in Puno -wham- elevation hit us. Dizziness, confusion, severe headaches, nausea, exhaustion, tingling fingers, toes, and face... you get the idea. Apparently 12,500ft is pretty high! Mate de coca (coca leaf tea) is said to aleviate some of these symptoms, so we promptly had 2 cups each and took a nap. Yesterday was a little rough, but we are much better today. We got up early in Puno to catch the ... read more

Hi again! We just wanted to let everyone know that a few more pictures of the trip can be found at http://community.webshots.com/user/mieldelsol It takes quite awhile to upload photos, so there are only 20 for now but more will be added when a faster connection is found (who knows when that will be...). Today we may be making our way to Cochabamba, or possibly staying here or going to Oruro, a city in between the two. As a city, La Paz doesn´t have the greatest reputation, but we are having a good time. It´s similar to Lima in some ways, and very different in others. There are many many more indigenous people here, and fewer tourists, so this is good! This morning we bought some exciting hats and scarfs from an indigenous woman, and we told ... read more

Well our bus journey from Puno to La Paz was pleasant and really scenic. Other than the nerve racking experience at the borders, we had no problem. The drive took us all along Lake Titicaca which was beautiful! Unfortunately we had to head straight to the British Embassy first thing on the Friday morning, so stopping and spending a leisurely few days on the lake was out of the question. (Isla del Sol, a big destination for most was given a big skip.......maybe next time!!!) Our first view of La Paz was incredible. It is a huge city, nestled in the mountains and built right high up onto the surrounding mountains. Really amazing! We booked into this huge old, draftly hotel called Torino. It was cheap (kind of cheerful.....okay. Scrap that. Just cheap!!!) It was run ... read more

We´ve really enjoyed our four-day stay in La Paz, the highest capital city in the world. The journey from Copacabana in a local bus will be remembered for; the lady at the back of the bus hiding a meowing kitten under her blanket, messily shelling monkey-nuts to stave off our lunch time hunger & watching our bus being cautiously ferried on a barge, across one side of Lake Titicaca to the other in a "water is no obstacle" short-cut to the big city. Arriving into La Paz by road, affords a natural vantage point to marvel at the city, which appears to be built in a huge crater. On closer inspection, the shops, university, business districts and salubrious residential areas, nestle in the centre of the bowl and the poorer residential areas work their way up ... read more

Surely with that great punning ability, a future career at the Sun is beckoning!!! My two weeks based in La Paz, Bolivia’s de facto capital, have come to an end, and while the city is certainly no architectural beauty, its location in the Andes' Cordillera Real (Royal Range), is pretty spectacular and in my mind makes La Paz pretty attractive. Set in a bowl or canyon at 3,600 metres, the city's housing and buildings stretch steeply up the walls of said canyon to the Altiplano 400 metres above. Handily this makes La Paz one of the easiest cities I have ever come across to navigate, as the main street, the Prado, runs along the bottom of the canyon floor, and so all you have to do the find it and orientate yourself is to walk downhill ... read more

Arrive in La Paz at 6.30am shattered as the trip was freezing! The boys were on a lesser bus so had arranged to meet them here as been told never to get a taxi in la paz, certainly not on my own. After waiting over an hour I decide they must have missed me as my bus was late and am so cold I can´t feel my feet so break the rules and get a cab to the hostel. They aren´t there either and they have no room but at least it is slightly warmer. They finally arrive at 9am thinking I must be dead. We get a hostel a few doors down and immediatelly get into bed. Get up for lunch but struggle, the altitude is a killer and the city is all sloped! I ... read more

27 Mayo - La Paz Okay, last day in La Paz. There are markets for different kinds of food, flowers, household stuff, basically anything you could ever want, you can buy on the street. There is an Api market here, where you can go buy the warm drink really cheaply and if you speak a little Spanish, you can be assured that you will be elbow-to-elbow with someone who would love to have a conversation with you. These are the coffee shops of Bolivia. There are all kinds of people stuffed into these little places getting Api and brunelas. Api is a thick purple drink comprised mostly of purple maize. It is seasoned with sugar, lime, cinnamon, and a little bit of cloves and served steaming hot. It is so thick that you don't realize how ... read more

26 Mayo - La Paz I am liking La Paz more and more. Kate and I spent most of the day out in the city today. We visited some markets, saw some architecture, savored some coffee and postres (dessert), enjoyed a late dinner as we watched some of the locals get trashed on cheap beer, and finished the night off with dessert drinks at the Café Luna y Sol, a groovy place run by some Dutch folks. We walked around quite a bit and got a chance to do some in-depth chatting. This city is full of markets and I took full advantage of the reduced prices on excellent weavings and jewelry. By enlisting the expert eye of my close confidant, Kate, I have been able to stock up on quite a few presents that I'm ... read more

26 Mayo - La Paz Nikki is feeling ill. Poor thing. She has not been well since Manu. She spent a couple of days sick there and now she is fighting something else. But she is a trooper, that's for sure. She doesn't wants to miss anything, so she toughs it out no matter how bad she feels. She reluctantly decided to go on the Caiman expedition with us in Manu, even though she felt like crap and should have just been resting, but we were assured that it would only be a couple of hours and that she would definitely want to see the Caiman. Then our boat never showed up so we ended up hiking all the way back to the lodge on some pretty rough river-rock terrain, and we never even saw the ... read more
