Upon leaving Brazil, we visit Iguazu Falls from the Argentinian side - unlike the Brazilian side which offered panoramic views of the falls, the Argentinian side demonstrates the immense power and force of the water. The best way to explore the park is on foot, with plenty of boardwalks and a nice train ride which takes you up to the Devil's Throat viewpoint. The sheer volume of cascading waterfalls amongst a magnificent natural setting is truly awe-inspiring. A short (and very wet!) jet boat ride tops off a great day at one of planet Earth's most spectacular natural wonders. We spend our next few days traversing the landscapes around Salta, a city in the ... read more

Bonjour.

R: So, while Cate gets to tell you about our day on the ranch (see previous post), I get to tell you about the rest of our start to Argentina. We started out, as previously mentioned, with a bus ticket we didn't know would work. Everyone said it wouldn't, remember? It did work. People in San Pedro de Atacama know nothing. Our 9am departure from San Pedro rolled out at around 10:50am, so we were off to a flying start. For some reason, the online booking engine gave us a row which did not exist in "semi-Cama" seating (ie. Basic seats) and had instead given us "Cama" (fully reclining, leather seats) for the same price. Win! The bus company (Frontera del Norte) was better than the previous one (Tur Bus) and provided snacks and tea! The ... read more

C: While researching our trip, Roger had come across a newspaper article recommending ranch stays in Argentina. We were keen to do this and had booked one with the slogan 'Todos es possible!' - everything is possible. We were booked in for one night to include full board and two 3 hour horse rides. So, the morning after the bus, a car came to pick us up and drove us into the countryside outside Salta. It was a really beautiful area, very green and verdant and surrounded by hills and mountains. We arrived at the ranch and were greeted by a Flemish girl, Ringe, who, it turned out, was volunteering at the ranch as a translator. We had our second breakfast(!) and then went out to meet the horses and our gaucho. The horses were obviously ... read more

Hola.

And before you know it Christmas is over and there's only one more week before we leave Buenos Aires and start the next part of our trip. Time for a short update on our activities in the past couple of weeks. A couple of weeks ago we flew to Salta in Northern Argentina for a short break from the busy city. Most people we have met in Buenos Aires go south to Mendoza or Patagonia after arriving in Argentina, but the northern part of Argentina is definitely worth a visit as well. Unbeknownst to us it was a holiday (La inmaculada concepcion de la virgin Maria). The actual holiday was on Tuesday, but on Monday everything was closed down already as well. As a result it was eerily quiet in Salta (a city of 500.000) with ... read more

Hello folks, from Salta, where Fi and I are taking a few days off and enjoying the city. With about 700,000 residents (all of whom seem to be walking or driving on the narrow streets at any given time), Salta is the most Spanish colonial city in Argentina, with beautifully preserved architecture and well-manicured garden plazas. A lot has happened since our last update, including being awoken in the middle of the night by a minor earthquake; an apocalyptic rain and hail storm that dumped over 4 inches of golfball-size hail chunks within 1 hour, turning the streets into rushing rivers; riding through nearly 500 miles of windswept desert (who knew that Argentina had so much desert!); and a bad day resulting in a trip to the emergency room for me. But we've also experienced some ... read more

Distance driven today: 317 miles / 510 km Cumulative distance driven: 12,928 miles / 20,806 km Today’s trip: Tarija, Bolivia to Salta, Argentina International border crossings: 1 After 3 hours of rather easy riding, we finally reached the border to Argentina today. During our enjoyable morning ride from Tarija in Bolivia we steadily descended, and before we knew it we had left the last parts of the South American Altiplano that we have been riding on ever since southern Peru behind us. By the time we reached the border we were practically at sea level altitude, with the temperature having risen to a very comfortable level and the tropical vegetation, which we hadn’t seen since Ecuador, reappearing on the roadside. It felt really good after our challenging Altiplano adventures. At the border we were initially confused. ... read more

Hey Bloggers, As it was cold we lay in bed all morning, just reading and using the Internet, we got up to grab the free breakfast though (bread, jam, coffee, juice). For lunch we went to ‘la casa de empanadas’, an empanada restaurant, which had 12 different ones for 80 pesos, they were Buenisimo!! We bumped into one of the girl’s who was working in the Loki hostel in Salta, we chatted for a while and left her as she was heading back to Salta that night. We then walked 3-4 km to the vineyards that were circled on our map from the hostel. We couldn’t find one of them and another didn’t do any wine tastings so that just left one to do: Quara Finca. It was free at least but we had to go ... read more

Hi Friends and Family, We had a chilled day today, it was the 1816 Argentinian Independence day celebrations today so everything in town was closed including most of the wineries. We went into town for lunch and to watch the horse parades. They were pretty impressive all dressed up in the old 1816 outfits, there must have been well over 300 horses all with women, men and children riding them in formation and cantering. We got lunch from one of the food stands at the parade, we got beef and pork sandwiches, and both were amazing. We walked around the shops (well ones open) and looked at all their different arts and crafts; Vick loved all the hand woven baskets and clay pottery. In the hostel we found a new friend, a stray ginger and white ... read more
