Background: Following independence from Spain in 1816, Argentina experienced periods of internal political conflict between conservatives and liberals and between civilian and military factions. After World War II, a long period of Peronist authoritarian rule and interference in subsequent governments was followed by a military junta that took power in 1976. Democracy returned in 1983, and numerous elections since then have underscored Argentina's progress in democratic consolidation.

How to Spend 48 Hours Without Doing Anything We left our hotel in Osaka around nine am on Sunday 11 October. We took two subway lines to reach the main train station. From there we hopped a bullet train back to the Tokyo main train station. Then, we took the airport express train to the Tokyo Narita airport for our 4pm flight. After a twelve hour flight, we killed about six hours in Washington Dulles airport with some friends who came to visit us. It was still Sunday. Around 10pm, we boarded a flight to Buenos Aires, Argentina. After a [View Full Entry]

We are in a neighborhood called Palermo Viejo in a studio condo ($300 USD/week--found it on Craigslist.com). Think Hawthorne District (Portland, Oregon) but older and edgier. It is a ridiculously charming city, in the European sense. Visually, it is like mixing San Francisco, Portland (Oregon), and Madrid, Spain, but it is cheaper to be here. A four course dinner for two with drinks costs $50 USD. The food is amazing and diverse--Argentine, Mexican, Chinese, Thai, Indian, and Italian. The produce is fresh and alive and your taste buds will jump for joy as if the fruits and veggies were p [View Full Entry]

I'm sitting in Ezezia International Airport in Buenos Aires, preparing to board my flight home. It's been a while since I've updated this blog. I got really caught up in all the things I was doing and neglected to make another post for almost the last two months. This obviously will be the last post, since my trip is now nearly over, but I will try to catch you up on the places I've been and the things I've been doing. When I last wrote in this blog, my girlfriend Emily was on her way to meet me in Medellin. We [View Full Entry]

Waiting for yet another night bus so here's the story so far for Argentina. After a lovely night sleeping like babies in first class we arrived the border town of Villazon around 7am. After what they told us was a qiuck walk over the border (more like an hours walk) we arrived La Quica. La Quica is a typical S American border town, lots of tourists and lots of people out to fleece the tourists. For the first hour we chased around trying to find a bank to pay for the bus outta there cause some genuis guy we met crossing [View Full Entry]

Sooo... 3 weeks in to our trip and I´m finally writing our first blog entry! We´re in south Chile, in a coastal town called Puerto Natales, which is the base for trekking in the Torres del Paine National Park. We hope to go trekking in a couple of days, which will hopefully include visiting some glaciers, but I´ve managed to get ill (already!) so we´re taking some downtime at the moment. We began our trip in Buenos Aires where we spent 5 days exploring the city. We had a great time there, and it was a great way to ease gently [View Full Entry]

The lagoon - a truly stunning spot

Uups, one months is already over, so it's time to write again. I added some of you newly to the list. So if this is the first time you receive a notification, there exist already two other entries from me. What happened so far: There are by far not so many tragic incidents to talk about as last time - which I am, as you can imagine, quite glad about. Fact is, that I really started enjoying being here and, as always, writing how great everything is, is far less entertaining than complaining about bad things... For the main part [View Full Entry]
