Background: Following independence from Spain in 1816, Argentina experienced periods of internal political conflict between conservatives and liberals and between civilian and military factions. After World War II, a long period of Peronist authoritarian rule and interference in subsequent governments was followed by a military junta that took power in 1976. Democracy returned in 1983, and numerous elections since then have underscored Argentina's progress in democratic consolidation.

1.20 am awake listening to astor piazzola remixes, the reinventor of tango. For once I am inside at this hour and not discovering the deeper meaning of malbec. My days comprise mainly of lounging around the city as if I was an architect enthusiast lamenting over which european influence was most present, but no, head firmly on the street activity ,and yes, debating which girl has the most beautiful face/figure is the cultural activity of everyday. I won't indulge any further on this matter but a footnote should include that it is a relentless and compelling task. The most interesting [View Full Entry]

... back again in Buenos Aires.

Hi All...Jess here. Last you heard, we were leaving for Iguazu Falls (AR side). This is one of the sights I have been looking forward to the most and it did not disappoint! The day was hot and sunny...perfect for visiting such an awe inspiring, body drenching site. The sheer power and magnitude of water was humbling and no pictures could ever do it justice. After strolling the catwalks of the upper and lower falls, we climbed in a speed boat with 15 other exuberant Argentines to view the falls from a different angle. We were pummeled by the smaller falls [View Full Entry]

It was only four and a half months ago, and I am back to where I started. Being back in Buenos Aires seemed like a breath of fresh air compared to some of the places I have visited and certainly after that bus journey from La Paz. After that journey from La Paz, the only thing which was keeping me sane was the thought of drinking some nice wine and eating some of the world best steak. As it so happened, I wasn’t the only person that was having a bad journey. My friend, Sarah who was coming across from London [View Full Entry]

Next Derick and I moved onto a Couchsurfers place out in Flores, a suburb just out of the city. We met our host Bent from Mexico and his French girlfriend, Cecile, on arrival and looked around the place. It was a bit shabby with outside-looking bricks on the inside and two Estonians were surfing there already so we had the floor. They had a great rooftop though and Parilla (BBQ machine) up top. We ended up hanging out with the large array of people which included Tolga from Turkey, Mel from San Fransisco (here to dance Tango) and Alfonso from Meixco. [View Full Entry]

We then moved to Stuart and Ashley's place in San Telmo. They were Americans living in Buenos Aires working in wine tastings and buying and they had a really sweet pad. A nice house with a big sunny kitchen, three levels with a Parilla and a table up top for drinking wine. They also had flatmates from Germany and France so quite an international bunch. The first night we went and bought some meat and vege (meat was cheaper of course) and cooked an asado (the BBQ food), complete with good wine and salad. We chatted a bit about their experiences [View Full Entry]

Hola! I arrived in Buenos Aires on Saturday 17th October and what a whirlwind it has been so far... The family I am living with live just outside la Capital Federal of Buenos Aires. Its a large suburb but I have not had time to explore it yet. I was picked up by Mariano at the airport on Saturday and taken back to their casa. Like true latino style they made me feel so welcome. Nina is Marianos mother and she is the most hospitible woman I´ve ever met. My spanish is very small and so we cannot communicate properly yet... [View Full Entry]

It's hard to know where to start with Buenos Aires (BA), which is just a fantastic city! It's by far the most European city we have been to thus far in South America with architecture that wouldn't look out of place in London or Paris. The majority of people here are of Spanish or Italian descent and so for once we didn't stand out too much walking around, and were even mistaken for Argentines a couple of times! Of course, the second Ben put his shorts on that ended as no-one here seems to wear them, even when it's hot! The [View Full Entry]

So, on our return to BA, we became city tourists once again. If you like Paris, youll like Buenos Aires. By far the most Western of any city we visited in South America and stacked with culture. If you like museums galleries, red wine, steak and tango you will be in your element in BA, otherwise you might struggle after a couple of days. We stayed in San Telmo and spent a few days around the city. We visited Evitas grave, some picturesque Japanese gardens and generally walked around upmarket areas like Palermo, trying to get a feel for the place. [View Full Entry]

Hey Bloggers! In The city of BA, been here since Monday, I think, geez we are only 2 weeks in to travelling and the days are already blending in to one another. It is a really nice city, but it is massive (3 million live in the city alone) with big roads running through the centre of it which makes you want to cough up fumes! Apart from that its very different to Rio. 1. You feel safe to wander about 2. It got a very European feel to it, lots of Art Nouveau buildings, big plazas, and a dock which [View Full Entry]
