Our excited arrival at BA airport soon palled when standing over 2 hours in the line to reach passport control. Yes it was fun chatting to all the people around us finding out what they planned to do but after an overnight flight we were weary. Once through we got to the baggage hall to discover there was no indication of our flight on the carousels so we methodically checked all the bags that had been taken off, clearly so many flights had arrived that the hall was full. Having found them we exited to locate the Holland America transport to the ship. That was well organised and within the hour we reached the port, our bags having been taken in vans to the ship. In the port terminal we regained our excitement as we were ... read more

After having reached the bottoms of the world, I took a flight up to Buenos Aires. The temperature shock and the civilisation shock!! I was not prepared for this! It is a huge city! It has some very pretty areas and some less pretty like every capital. I went to visit the square where la casa rosada is and the museum behind it, different areas of the city including la Boca. I did a walking tour there cause it sounded like an interesting history ! It is the area where all the immigrants arrived as it used to be the main harbour. At first immigrants were welcome but when the president changed, they were not welcome anymore so they arrived with nothing and built home with scrap from boat materials. Nowadays it is a very colourful ... read more

So there we were bright eyed and full of hope, anxious with excitement to get to Buenos Aires. Just the short matter of a 27 hour bus journey........ or so we thought! Our first leg of the journey to the Bolivian border flew by! Luxury seats that fully reclined, good air con and a good nights sleep. We arrived at the boarder town of Vizella around half 10 in the morning and had to find our connecting bus. Some broken Spanish later in the bus office we were put into a taxi to get to the bus. Alarm bells should have started to ring when we arrived at our final bus - the guy who put our bags on was in less than a healthy state and sounded like he was about to die. He was ... read more

Chile: My arrival to the South American continent came on a 787 direct from Auckland. Santiago was the stop and I had plans to meet my friend Alex, his wife Jo Ana, and his brother and parents. Alex and I went to Duquesne together and worked at Deloitte as well. It was good to finally meet people I knew. We were all staying at the url=http://www.starwoodhotels.com/whotels/property/overview/index.html?propertyID=1979&language=en_USW Santiago, which made it convenient. After checking in and getting situated I meet the family in the lobby and we went to a great restaurant called url=https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g294305-d928983-Reviews-Happening-Santiago_Santiago_Metropolitan_Region.htmlHappening. The next day we went on a tour of a few wineries and to Valparaiso. The wineries were amazing and the bus ... read more

This is the first ‘episode’ of another of 'our' travel experiences. The collective ‘episodes’ (this being the first) describe our journey from our arrival in Buenos Aires (Sth America) from the 1st week of October for an extended tea-bag experience of this huge continent. Like home, the continent is huge. In the few weeks available to us, we can only experience a few locations - a (tea-bag) dunk here, another there, and so on. After a few days in Buenos Aires, we fly to Lima for a 'dunk' into a few selected locations. We then fly to Chile to do some more 'tea-bagging'. We'll eventually make our way back to Argentina and our departure home. We attach a few pics to give a flavour of our journey, and some may 'flow over' past the dialogue. If ... read more

Groundhog day Buenos Aires style Buenos Aires :Tango, Parrilas, Empanadas, a city that easily levels with Madrid and Paris. It reminded me of México city in it's golden years, elegant and proud with a beautiful mix of colonial and cosmopolitan. Time has passed in both cities, but there's something that Buenos Aires kept, "sus Aires" , it's flair of grandeur. Latin American's perceive Argentineans as arrogant and "presumidos" ( feel free to ask any Latin American friend about it) they think too much of themselves. They, at the same time, feel the same about the " Porteños" , the people of Buenos Aires. We now understand the pride they feel ( or felt ) about their city ( and country). Buenos Aires stole our heart and let us after Rio, amazed of its mix. The Spanish, ... read more

Today my friend Isa gave me a tour of Buenos Aires from a local's prespective, and what a day it was. We walked and walked and walked and walked. We started with coffee and a cheese scone in Olivios, I walked 8 blocks from the hostel to meet him, much to the concern of my daughter who is convinced I would get lost, mugged, or who knows what else. This place roast their own beans above the premises, serious coffee makers, excellent coffee. Jumping on the subway was the next adventure to take us to Once, a Jewish suburb to see Isa's partner's artists studio. The subway was very crowded, not quite Japanese or Chinese standards but close to this, almost cheek to cheek with people both ends! So 2 train lines, up and down stairs, ... read more

Wednesday was the first of 2 days we spent in Buenos Aires and what better way than to play teaching assistant at the school where my daughter works. We left her house in La Plata at 5-45am on a bus to the La Plata bus terminal, jumped straight onto the commuter bus into Buenos Aires which takes just over and hour. You get off near Retiro and the subway and then we jumped straight onto a train to the suburb of Olivios where Colegio Tarbut is located. This is a 18mths to high school private Jewish school surrounded by a heap of other private schools all around it. To give you an idea of the type of neighbourhood, this is where the Argentinian president lives. He does not live at Casa Rosada in the city, this ... read more

Nearly everyone I've met who has traveled to Buenos Aires comments about how it feels more like a European capital than like a South American one. In the regional context, this seems like a cultural disappointment, but as Latin American capitals go, the only ones that I've been to that compare (or that even are tolerable) are La Paz and La Habana. The city is enormous (the population of LA), and each section is visually (and apparently culturally) unique. The guide on the mediocre historical walking tour pointed out how the predominantly Italian and French architecture are fused with other styles, and this extends to the atmosphere in the traditional bars and cafes, which I thought to be the best experiences in the city: Wandering the streets near the docks to tentatively enter a cafe that ... read more

After my terrible bus ride from Sao Paulo to Foz do Iguacu I decided that for the 20 hour bus ride to Buenos Aires I would buy the most expensive ticket I could get. For $150 USD I received a full cama-suite (cama=bed) spot on the bus to Buenos Aires. This bus was incredible. I had a full reclining leather seat/bed, personal LCD TV screen with on-demand movies and television shows (in English), I was fed fine h'orderves, served fine whiskies and cocktails. I even had Wi-Fi! Talk about the bus of the future. Totally worth it and 20 hours later I arrived in the capital of Argentina refreshed and ready to explore. My old business client and friend Mariano of El Centro de Investigaciones Toxicologicaswas even nice enough to pick me up from the bus ... read more
