'No alarm going off for 6 months' was one of the perks of a sabbatical I thought, but the past week there hasn't been a day without the alarm going off, as both of us had Spanish classes to go to every morning (4 hours a day!). And they have paid off. So much so, that we decided to continue after we get back from Uruguay. But first we're going to see a polo match on Monday. The tickets were actually for Saturday, but apparently the field was still so wet from all the rain (we did have quite a lot of it) they had to move the first 4 matches of the 122th campeonato argentino abierto de polo, world's biggest polo tournament. Just imagine, both futbol and polo being postponed due to bad weather. I ... read more

Having arrived in BAs, we thought we would jump right back to Spring, but instead it rained so hard the first day we got here, they actually had to cancel Argentina vs Brazil (futbol/soccer that is)! In the meantime it has cleared up nicely and we've been spending many hours of walking, biking, sitting on terrases already. We also started doing some planning finally - next week we both have 20 hours of Spanish classes, we booked tickets to a Polo match and we're going to see some local futbal teams play against each other (neither one we've ever heard about, but Boca Juniors just won the title 2 weeks ago and they won't be playing anymore while we're here). The week after next, we'll be visiting Urugay on a short trip. Today we cashed in ... read more

My original plan was to try and get from Paraguay all the way down to Uruguay and Montevideo. Due to border and bus schedule logistics however, this would prove too problematic. It was much easier to get to Buenos Aires and with a load of newly made friends waiting for me there, I thought that I might as well head there first for my planned week in the Argentinian capital before going across to Uruguay after. To get down to Buenos Aires, I boarded my first overnight bus of the trip - fourteen hours from Encarnacion. It was pretty painless in the end. I managed to type out a blog entry before getting a pretty good sleep - the semi-camas are pretty much like La-Z-Boys so I had no trouble sleeping. With only four passengers in ... read more

This will be the final blog post from my 2015 PanAmerican Highway riding adventure. Today Tuesday I am meeting with a shipping agent here in Buenos Aires to discuss timeline and logistics for shipping back the motorcycle to Seattle. Once all documents are in order, I will really be looking forward to taking a flight back to the US to meet my family and to return to work. However, as of today, I don’t know exactly when I will be able to fly out. I am kinda hopeful that I should be able to fly back to the US by the end of this week (fingers crossed). Before I end this journey and blog post, I want to take the opportunity and recognize all the people and organizations that have, implicitly and explicitly made this motorcycle ... read more

Distance driven today: 255 miles / 410 km Cumulative distance driven: 15,552 miles / 25,298 km Yesterday’s trip: Mar del Plata to Buenos Aires, Argentina Last day of riding: yes Yesterday morning I left the very agreeable city of Mar del Plata and headed to Buenos Aires for the very final leg on my long PanAmerican highway trip. It was indeed a pleasurable ride, with blue skies, a bright shining sun, and a highway with very light traffic. As I was entering Buenos Aires I could not help but feel a sense of accomplishment. At the same time I was, for the very first time, hit be the realization that this long riding trip was now coming to its end. I will therefore attempt below to summarize my PanAmerican ride in the only way that I ... read more

Distance driven: 40 miles / 65 km Cumulative distance driven: 14,621 miles / 23,531 km Complete motorcycle overhaul, including fixing the faulty clutch: yes Zoe’s last day on the PanAerican adventure: yes, she just took a flight to the US The goal of the first half of the day was to get the faulty clutch fixed. In addition, a larger service was due. I headed out early in the morning to get to the main authorized BMW dealership in Buenos Aires. From our hotel, close to the international Buenos Aires airport, it took over 2 hours in very dense traffic, to get to the dealership. Well there, the mechanics did a great job of prioritizing my bike, even though I just dropped in, without an appointment. Thanks guys at Trepad BMW Motorrad motors for dropping all ... read more

Distance driven last two days: 301 miles / 484 km Cumulative distance driven: 14,581 miles / 23,466 km Last two days’ trip: Laboulaye to Buenos Aires, Argentina Today’s ride was a wet story in many respects. It was raining heavy all morning as we left the little town of Laboulaye, and the wet weather continued for many hours. This made it rather hard for Christer to drive, not only because of the very poor visibility, but also because on top of the rain, he had to constantly pump up the pressure on the clutch handle. Overtaking big trucks on the road under these conditions was certainly not optimal, but then again what alternatives did we really have? As a result, we had to make rather frequent stops as gas stations along the road, and get something ... read more

I really should probably list this as somewhere over Brazil or something, but we'll go with Buenos Aires for old times' sake. This was our last day in South America, which was sad. We woke up for a 7:00 breakfast before our bus came through at 8:00. A bit of time in the airport, and we caught our flight to Buenos Aires around 10:45. After landing in the city airport, we took a taxi to downtown to change money one last time for lunch and a cab to the international airport. Lunch was one last bout of empanadas at our favorite empanada place near the school. We hung out there for a while and met a Canadian dancer who speaks no Spanish and was very confused about pricing. To be fair, pricing is confusing here. Many ... read more
