We awoke on the final full day of our wonderful cruise to Antarctica and back, realizing that this dream would soon be over. As we ate breakfast in the Lido, we realized that we were already at the pier. Again we had French toast and juice. We knew that it was “Tuesday” from the mats in the elevator. The captain announced that the ship had been cleared for passengers to go ashore about the time we got to the Showroom. Many other passengers were already assembled there for their tours. We were in the Red-12 group, so quite a few others would disembark before us. Jen is the HAL member of the excursion team that has been in charge of keeping things orderly in the Showroom, and Sharon and I both agree, things have run smoother ... read more

The Buenos Aires Street Arttour takes you around the city giving you an up-close introduction to the street art scene, our guide an English guy called Matt was so enthusiastic for the art and knew where to find all the best murals and graffiti pieces. He’d previously co-written a book on South American street art and has a wealth of knowledge on all things graffiti. Matt leads us around the neighbourhoods of Palermo and Colegiales as he explains about the history of street art in Argentina - When the military dictatorship fell in the 80’s and the constraints on free expression were lifted graffiti bloomed- we see colours exploding and animals leaping out from the walls as wepass by, in addition to animals every other picture imaginable will appear somewhere in the city if you look ... read more

It's hard for me to think about Buenos Aires without the inevitable comparisons to Paris. Both cities have similar monumental architecture, wide avenues, beautiful parks, majestic water fountains, and dog shit strewn sidewalks. I think I like Buenos Aires better though. While it's significantly less diverse (I've never seen so many white people in one city), Buenos Aires doesn't have the swastika graffiti that plagues Paris, has nicer weather, friendlier people, and is less over-run by tourists. Perhaps the friendlier people is directly related to being a city not constantly invaded by tourists - but I think language is part of it too. Parisians seem to hate it when you mess up their language by not speaking correctly, but spanish seems more like english in that the speakers are more laid back about having their mother-tongue ... read more

When I landed in Buenos Aires I once again got punished for being Australian and copped a $100US reciprocity fee for flying into the country. The annoying thing about this one though was that unlike with Chile where you could pay it on arrival it had to be prepaid and the receipt needed to be printed and presented to customs on arrival. While I had tried to pay it a couple of days before I left, the quality of the wifi was so poor that it kept on timing out. Although I did manage to pay it the night before I was due to fly out, I was unable to find a printer. Let's just say that the customs official wasn't too impressed when I pulled out my iPhone at the customs desk to show him ... read more

The alarm went off at 0320 this morning and we were both like, aaarrrgggghhhhhh….. However, we were pleasantly surprised to find our hotel had set up the breakfast buffet early for us and the air crews staying at the hotel, so we went to the airport in good spirits. 0400 is about the only time of day Buenos Aires roads are clear, and it still took us a half hour to get to the international airport. We scored again with TACA (used to be “Take A Chance Airline” but has come a LONG way – got to fly in a brand-spanking new Airbus 330 that has more computerized stuff on each seatback than the old space shuttles), as we were allowed to send all of our bags onboard for no extra charge. We had been stressing ... read more
