Dear Friends and Family, After travelling 28 hours from door to door, Ann, Riley and I arrive in Buenos Aires, Argentina. We stopped in Toronto to change planes and then in Santiago just to walk in a big circle and get back on the same plane. We used Uber to get from the airport to the Airbnb and found it to be really reliable and cheap to get around in Argentina and later Chile. We were staying in the Palermo district that boasts lots of coffee shops, restaurants and grocery shops. For my birthday, we did a big walking tour of Buenos Aires. We started in the Caminito at the colourful buildings and market stalls. We walked north to La Bombonera (home to the Boca Juniors), the playground at the Parque Flora Native, San Telmo, Plaza ... read more

R: The next morning it was time so say our goodbyes and head off. I was booked on a flight from El Calafate airport in the early afternoon which required an early start. The tour company had told me that the could take me to the airport but it wouldn't be till later in the day, so I had booked my own minibus transfer. I was considering the public bus but my prior experience with Argentinian public transport told me that I didn't want to leave this to chance. I was sat in the kitchen with some of the other people from the tour, when suddenly the driver showed up early! Without saying full goodbyes to all, I was whisked away. The minibus went round and around the town picking up people before making the 3 ... read more

Buenos Aires!

La première chronique suit!... read more

It was Easter-break 2018 and it was time to leave Curaçao again for a bit. Thanks to a voucher with the airline whom I visited New York and Miami with, I got this flight basically for free. I just had to pay the taxes. Of course it was a long journey, first 2 hours and 45 minutes to Miami and then change for another 8 hours. But hey, it took me where I wanted to go: Buenos Aires. It was my second visit to Argentina's capital and largest city with about 16 million inhabitants in its metropolitan area. My first visit was back in July 2010. The reason for my visit was to attend the wedding of my friend Gideon (Gidi), who I met in Vietnam back in 2008 and then again in Israel in 2013. ... read more

One of the differences I find between Chilean and Canadian work culture is the amount of greeting/goodbye-ing that goes on. Canadians, I would say, and I don’t want to say we are not as friendly (although I think Chileans might say we are not), we are not exactly full of hellos and goodbyes in the office. Like, when you come into the office here, or when you leave, you might say hello or goodbye to who you see on the way to your desk. Whereas in Chile, you may go to your desk, but then you go around your group, and give everyone a handshake, or a kiss on the cheek, and then when you leave, it’s all the same process. Ciao ciao, decansas, hasta manana etc. etc. And when you first think about it, well ... read more

After roughing it out in Patagonia, we flew back into the cities and spent a good 10 days in Bueno Aires, Iguazu and Colonia (Uruguay). Finally a real Honeymoon begins! Our impression of Bueno Aires is that its such a colourful capital city with many diverse neighbourhoods that are distinctly different from each other. There is the La Boca, Caminito neighbourhood which was so colourful yet with a rich immigrant history behind it. Taking a walking tour, which we did, was probably the best part to understanding this neighbourhood and its deep cultural roots. I particularly loved the colours on the buildings and how it all intertwined with other aspects of the lives of the Argentines, in culture, political, football and livelihoods. Then there is the Recoleta and Retiro, which are slightly more upscale with lots ... read more

How does one do justice to Buenos Aires (BA) when visiting the city of 15 million people in only 4 days and nights? My answer: hire a private tour guide! Prior to arriving in BA, I googled "BA private tour guide" and up came TripAdvisor.com with choices. I wrote to highly rated guide Marcelo Mansilla and he responded right back (he gave me permission to use his whole name if I wrote positive reviews about his tour business, Ha!). It was the best decision I made for making the most of my limited time in BA. I hired him for ½ day right after checking in to my hotel room. This was crucial for me as he showed me the ropes of navigating the city using taxis, buses and when walking alone, especially at night. He ... read more
