Alrighty people! Okay, so based on some feedback I've received lately, I came across as being quite down in my last blog! I had not idea my blog appeared so negatively! Perhaps I was having a bad day?? Just to reassure everyone, I'm well, I'm fine and doing a okay! This past week has been a bit of a rollercoaster for me. At the beginning of the week I ended up losing my entire contents of my ipod. For those who have this, its a huge deal, but even worse for those who travel. Unless of course you have a backup or your laptop with you. My laptop at home in Dundee has all my music, but I don't have that with me. Therefore, at the moment, I am music less!! I swear, I nearly cried. ... read more

Mt Manganui, caving in Waitomo, mud baths in Rotorua, Shopping in Auckland & a trip to the Bay of islands. Next on the agenda was Rotorua otherwise known as Rotton Rua. This is because the town is built around many geo-thermal mud pools and it can get pretty stinky. It wasn´t as bad as we expected but you would get the odd whiff that could make you feel a bit quesy. Don´t think I could see myself becoming a local anytime soon.. We booked ourselves on a Maori night for that evening. This activity is very popular in Rotorua and involves learning more about the Maori culture and experiencing the food. We went along with a couple of friends from the Magic Bus, Michael and Emma and Jen whom we´d bumped into again that day. The ... read more

Today is the day we move, or are meant to be, out of our house of 12 odd years. It has been surprising and a source of some stress / angst for me in particular as to how long it has taken to pack everything up and square everything away. It seems that our house just oozes "stuff" and possessions / junk! Cleaners are here for 1:00pm and I need to have some final house maintenance and a semitrailer load of possessions in our car and camper trailer in just a few more hours. Really looking forward to finally getting out of Perth and away. Regards Russell... read more

The good news is that I've made it to Adelaide. The bad news is the car did not. We left Perth on Monday the 22nd. The first day was a fairly ambitous one and we managed to get an early start despite a goodbye celebration the night before. After the aggravating drive through the eastern suburbs we hit the open highway. The plan was to take the secondary highway route and stop for lunch at a small town called Hyden. Once you leave Perth, the rest of Western Australia is pretty vacant of other people and buildings. We did pass through a small town called Corrigin which is slightly famous for it's dog cemetary. It took 3-4 hours to get to Hyden, which is practically a ghost town. Hyden is most famous for the spectaculur wave ... read more

Our Asian adventure nearly over, we spent 2 nights in a very busy Bangkok before heading to the new and slightly clinical Bangkok airport where we had a flight to Singapore and a connection to Perth. After some 18 hours we finally arrived at the YHA in Fremantle. Our first stop in Perth (Fremantle or Freo to the locals who shorten everything and/or stick an o on the end) is about 30 minutes on the train from Perth city, it's a really quaint town with trendy bars, restaurants (surprisingly a huge amount here are BYO so no alcohol costs), shops and a great deal of colonial architecture making it feel as though it has far more history than it does (about 150 years). It felt good to arrive in a place so starkly different from Asia ... read more

Hi everyone, not much to report, but that we have finally received decent rain the last couple of days, so the weather is muggy at the moment. Five weeks to go before we hit the shores of New Zealand, I am looking forward to it. ... read more

A BBQ at the beach on Australia Day.... well it doesn't get much more Australian than that does it? Australia Day is Australia's official national day, on the 26th January. It commemorates the landing of the First Fleet in Sydney Cove on that day in 1788. By 1808, the day was being celebrated as 'First Landing' or 'Foundation Day'. In 1818 (the 30th anniversary) Governor Macquarie had a 30-gun salute at Dawes Point and gave government workers a holiday. In 1938 the 150th anniversary of British settlement in New South Wales was widely celebrated. In that year, NSW was the only state to abandon the traditional long weekend and the annual Anniversary Day public holiday was held on the actual anniversary day - Wednesday 26 January. Since 1994 all states and territories have taken the Australia ... read more

Finally made it Sydney! We arrived on the 25th, the day before Australia Day & already there were flags & banners all set up advertising the big day! We got the train down from the Blue Mountains which was a really nice journey but would have been much more spectacular probably if the sun had been shining! My first day in Sydney ever & it's cloudy.....no sun anywhere to be seen! Once we'd checked into our hostel (which was a bit of a dump & they didn't even have enough sheets or pillow cases when we arrived so I had a nice towel as my pillow case for the 3 nights we were there, all of the hostels we actually wanted to stay in were full for Australia Day, so the less said about it the ... read more
