On Monday morning our accommodation included breakfast so having had our fill we set off about 9. We were heading for Napier, well known for its Art Deco architecture. We drove east across a mountain range. All along the top of the peaks there was a large wind farm, the sails turning majestically in the strong breeze. The sides of the valleys were heavily wooded with many plantations of pine trees. We saw a number of logging trucks, fully loaded, passing by in the other direction. We arrived at Ahuriri, a seaside suburb of Napier, where we were booked into the Navigate Seaside Hotel. We parked by the beach and walked along the shore. It was a sunny day and many families were enjoying the beach. We walked along the Main street. It was lined with ... read more

Tour Day 35, Cruise Day 35 – Day at Sea Tour Day 36, Cruise Day 36 – Melbourne, Australia – Melbourne was a total bust this time around. First, my roommate from the 22-day tour of Europe last summer had some craziness in his life, and he begged off until I return in January. No problem, I’ll do the hop-on, hop-off bus tour. Second, I awoke to a case of the blahs – not really sick but just not feeling well. Third, it was raining – not a good day for the hop-on, hop-off bus tour anyway! So, there will be more about Melbourne in January. Wednesday morning we were up early as we had to be at the railway station by 7-15am. We had booked 2 seats on the Northern Explorer, a day trip from Auckland to Wellington. I had seen a program in World Scenic Railways about it which was very favourable. We had often driven between the two cities but this would be something different. We were a little surprised on reaching the station to find that the ticket office was a container and the queue to get our boarding passes was long and in the open. Having travelled The Ghan, their procedures are very professional. This was more like a third world country scenario. There was only one, very efficient, woman issuing the seat allocation and then we had to take our own bags to the luggage car ... read more

Tuesday morning we took our time emerging from our accommodation. We stopped at a coffee shop about 9am for breakfast and then walked down to Queen Street, which is the main drag here. After a wander up and down with not much excitement we went to the waterfront which is much more interesting. The beautifully restored post office building dominates the Customs Square. The P&O Pacific Explorer was in Port and many potential passengers were heading for it. Pity them as our experience on that ship was less than exciting!! We then wandered along the dock passing the ferry terminals and down to the Maritime Museum. The huge hull of the America's Cup winning boat dominates the view outside. Many of the restaurants near here were preparing for Melbourne Cup day lunches and were sponsored by ... read more

Tour Day 28, Cruise Day 28 – Day at Sea Tour Day 29, Cruise Day 29 – Day at Sea Tour Day 30, Cruise Day 30 – Cross International Dateline, Day at Sea "The Crocodile Hunter" was standard television fare in my household during its 1996–2004 run, and Australia Zoo was definitely on my attractions list; however, it is about an hour out of Brisbane and would not be easily accessible to a “fella without a car” during my return visit. Soooo, I opted to subscribe to the “spoon-fed” shore excursion version, albeit more expensive and of shorter duration than I would have enjoyed on a free-lance visit. It’s a great facility and worthy of your time and effort. Tour Day 31, Cruise Day 31; Brisbane, Australia – CRIKEY! It's Australia Zoo (7 hours) – Boarding ... read more

Within this city’s boundaries there are 53 volcanoes, more than 50 islands, 3 wine regions, numerous beaches and a boatload of Kiwis that make it a truly exciting and vibrant place - what’s not to love? As the largest and most multicultural city in New Zealand, Auckland is far more than just a gateway to the country’s blockbuster natural scenery. Indeed, it is an attractive place, formed by volcanoes and flanked by natural harbors. Its population is as notable for its size as its diversity, with one-third of all Kiwis calling it home. It’s a genuine cultural melting pot, and the nation’s most vibrant city. Thanks to its location on a narrow isthmus, many of Auckland’s districts weave around bays and harbors, and most residents live within 2 miles of the ocean. As a result, the ... read more

Last thursday Ina and I spent our first full day together at Franz Josef Glacier. We arrived around 11:30am and emediatly started the 5½h return hike up to Roberts point to get a good look at the glacier. In the beginnig we had perfect hiking weather: Not to warm and a bit cloudy, but not rainy. 15 minutes in ut first started raining, but according to weather reports it should stop again soon so we were still optimistic. Turns out the weather report was wrong and we spend all but 30min of the 6h it took us to get up and back down walking through rain. Walking is a generous term in this case, most of the time you had to climb over rocks and waterfalls. Once we reached the top, we couldn't even enjoy the ... read more

We had a credit with Air NZ from 2020 which we needed to redeem so we decided to use it to visit friends for a couple of weeks. Today we flew from Adelaide direct to Auckland, leaving at 11-50 am. The flight was OK except we were told that our ticket did not entitle us to free food and drink of which we were unaware, and food and drink to buy was not available until after the free service. A very discriminatory practice I felt. We eventually were able to buy a sandwich and a glass of wine. The system was good for that though as we could order and pay through the screen and it came quickly. We landed in Auckland after 4 hours of flying. The process of passport and customs was relatively smooth ... read more
