After 15 minutes diving the reef wall we saw one white tipped reef shark a little shorter than 2 meters checking us out... it came quit close but not offencive. willem took a picture but for me he was getting to close so I swam back to the reef... as instructed....

‘Hello, are you the ‘Bundscoach’ of Tonga?, what will be the results of tonights soccer match?...

Tuesday 19 Sept: The day of the King of Tonga’s Funeral. We got a lift into town and saw saw the procession of 100s of people including the King being carrired on a big temple structure by a 100 people. It was very impressive with thousands of people watching. Once the King had arrived at the tombs it was to far away to see anything and I ended up entertaining some local people with cartoons and paper stars. It was a very special day to be part of as it is probably the beginning of the end of the last monarchy as they are heading towards democracy. At 4pm I said goodbye to Stuart and Nancy and caught my flight to Fiji. I was suppose to stop at Mana and then onto Nadi but because of ... read more

Saturday 16th Sept: Went diving today, it rained as we left - it stopped shortly after but the water stayed choppy all day. We had to kit ourselves up which wasn’t good in the choppy weather. The first dive was through split rock- a big 20 ft rock -split in half one person wide. There wasn’t much to see as you swim through the rock but before we went through you can see lots of fish- including a lion fish and some smaller fish swum through my fingers. The second dive we went through a tunnel and into an underground cave and saw loads of fish on a fan of coral. My favourite fish were the trumpet fish that look like dragons. On the way home in the distance we saw a humped back whale breaching ... read more

On Thursday and Friday I went up to the village school to help out. (I had gone up on Monday to offer my services). It was called Tonga Side School and was attached to a Tongan speaking Primary school but the side school taught everything in English. I helped in class 3 (7 and 8 year olds). They had wooden benches and desks and blackboards along the front wall. They follow the New Zealand syllabus so what they teach is similar to English schools. At lunch time on Thursday we visited a teacher who was ill- he had been paralysed on his left side but he was now fine on the left and couldn't move the right side- it was an evil spirit. We sat on a large mat in his house and they sang and ... read more

Wednesday: Spent all day on a flat bottomed boat with 12 people (including all the same people as yesterday) whale watching. We saw 5 adult humpbacks and a mother and calf. Swimming with them was amazing. I can’t say much more- just look at the pictures / video (they don't convey how amazing they were). We ended the day going to Mariners cave where the entrance is underwater and you have to dive down 2 meters and in 2 meters to get in. It was scary but I’m glad I did it. ... read more
