Last night, before I went to bed, Mom warned me that there was one cockroach that they had on board. Supposedly it is the large kind and so is a lone cockroach, and in the south pacific, where they've been everybody gets at least one. Well, my little bed is right by the hatch to the outside. And in the bathrooms, there were a bunch of little black crickets for some reason. Yeah, bugs. Ick! I didn't think I'd have to face that here in NZ. As I was chanting right before bed, one of the things that I was chanting about was a BUG FREE ZONE all around my bed. I slept about 8 hours, but it was a bit fitful. A boat is NOISEY! Creeking, rocking, clicking, all kinds of noises, not to mention ... read more

Wow!! I don't think I have ever since so many beautiful scenery in my life...well, i've said that a few times during this trip but seriously, today was awesome (Osome, like the kiwis say it)!! It was a really long day leaving at 7 am this morning and then driving (on the Magic bus!) for 2 hours towards Te Anau...The road taking us there was wonderful...Hips (lots) of sheeps and cows just chillin' as the sun rise on the moutains behing them...WOW... We stayed in Te Anau for a big 20 minutes as we needed to be the first bus in line to get to Milford Sound to catch our bus and be the first at the picture spots places on the road!! :) Our bus driver was just skipping every other coach on the road...Good ... read more

Hi everyone This is my third and final practice blog from NZ.....the next one will be the real thing because tomorrow I'm on the plane! Yippee. I'll try and keep a weekly blog or at least a country by country one. My itinerary is Singapore, United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Greece, Turkey, Italy, Austria, Czech Republic and Germany. That will take until mid May. Then it's on to St Petersburg in Russia to work until the end of October. Final leg is a month in Thailand on the way home, arriving in NZ at the beginning of December. This last week has been lots of final paperwork and crossing things off lists! The packing is nearly done thankgoodness. There've been a few nights out as well as you will see in the photos. Thanks Ali and Gene ... read more

After several days at sea our ship docked at Wellington in New Zealand, in the Land Down Under. When the Polynesian Maoris from the South Pacific discovered New Zealand they called it “Antearoa,” or the Land of the Long White Cloud. The name may have come from the heavy clouds that gathered around mountain peaks and spread for many miles along the horizon. This was one of the signs the Maoris used in their remarkable navigation feats. Our guidebook says New Zealand was one of the last large land masses to be settled by the human race. The Polynesians arrived between 800 and 600 years ago and established their Maori culture. Dutch sailors discovered the land about 500 years ago and began to include New Zealand on their maps of the world. A Dutch cartographer christened ... read more

After Hahei we headed across to the west coast to the surfing town of Raglan. I think this has to be one of my favourite places in NZ and I've only seen about 20% of the country so far! The town just has this chilled out feeling where anything goes. We stayed at Karioi Lodge- a really funky place set in the bush with hammocks and decks that look out over the rugged west coast... and the meanest chef who puts on some amazing homemade food! First up.... Surf School! Joined by my American buddies we took on the waves! And guess what... first time up (Go the Incredibles!). Ok, we were just surfing the white break waters but it felt good! After an exhausting afternoon we head back to camp. More fun came as night ... read more

Drove further down the west coast, into the Glacier Country. In winter this area has ski and snow resorts, but all year through the glaciers of Franz Josef and Fox stay solid, and are in fact getting bigger. We booked a glacier walk for the next day and headed on a couple of local walks. We checked out the Canavans Knob Walk, which took us through a little rainforest to a great view of the mountains, and the Tatare Tunnels Walk. The walk was really nice, but the tunnel disappointing. We were told we should take a torch for the 20min walk in the pitch black, wet tunnel to see glow worms. 5 mins in Debs gave up with very wet trainers, and Spen walked the whole length without seeing any! ... read more

Well I'm sitting here wondering whether I'll ever walk again. We just did this "day walk" which involved climbing a volcano after a 4am start. My knees went about halfway through the descent, so I just had to do a very sporty high speed hobble, inlcuding falling flat on my face at one point and being carried in a very fetching fireman's lift position down some of the slopes. I'm such an action girl! Anyway, Auckland was great, not least because Jeff who I did the flying scholarship with 10 years ago put me up in his naval base. It took a bit of time to readapt myself to military life - but the sight of young men doing drill outside my room at 8am every day certainly helped. Got to go on Jeff's warship, but ... read more

24 February Queenstown is the home of Bungy jumping. So early this morning we headed out for the bridge at Kuwarau Bridge, where it all started. They start jumping at 9:00 am. We got there shortly thereafter. The place was already busy. They fasten you around the ankles, but there is an extra harness which goes around your waist and thighs. If you want, they will dunk your head in the river, but most people don’t want it. When you are finished bouncing around a small row boat comes over to get you - they pull you in and un-hook you. It was really quite cold there today, and one girl jumped twice with only her bra and jeans. So, did we or did we not jump? Now, this evening we are in Oamaru on the ... read more
