Forgive me the cheesy title. Unsurprisingly, the brainchild of Brandon, the effervescent, cowboy hat-sporting Arizonan I had the pleasure of meeting on the Kiwi bus, it actually sums up the white-knuckle ride that was Queenstown rather aptly. I'm ill at ease when people write off popular destinations as 'tourist traps'. The Costa Del Sol, Kuta and Cancun are all pidgeon-holed in this way but I certainly don't subscribe to the philosophy that mainstream equals bad. It's like when everybody loved Keane (the band, not Roy or Pako) when they first came to the fore; a little quirky, a little different but as soon as this translated into success in the charts it was 'thumbs down' from the 'I wanna be different brigade'. My guess would be that none of these types ever made it to Queenstown, ... read more

Abel Tasman National Park is a stretch of beautiful coastline near the north-west end of South Island. To really appreciate it you can do a four or five day hiking tour along all its bays. But with time limited we stayed a night near Totaranui Bay, did a days hike toward a view point, and stayed another night. During the hike we saw several wonderful coves, many animals, including strange birds (I felt a bit like in the world of "Riven: Sequel to Myst", for those who enjoyed this computer game) and seals. We also found out how the locals enjoy a trip to this paradise. We met a whole lot of them on the beach. Most of them were pretty drunk since they had arrived by motor boat instead of walking and brought lots of ... read more

En route to the springs stopped off for a coffee at Mt Lyford Lodge (the largest log cabin in NZ). Lovely building - we both thought it would look great covered in snow with a roaring log fire on the go! Arrived in Hanmer Springs ready to get into some serious relaxation - stayed at a nice hostel called Le Gite. The whole pool/spa area is outdoors and the mineral pools are heated. The hottest pools were the sulphur pools, which are heated to 40/41 degrees - very nice - if a little smelly! Great Tapas in the evening. On the second day walked in Hanmer Forest Park along the url=http://www.doc.govt.nz/Explore/002~Tracks-and-Walks/By-Region/010~Canterbury/Hanmer/103~Long-Walks.aspDog Stream Waterfall Track. There and back took around 3 hours. Spent the ... read more

How y’all doin? Kiss ma grits honey! Britney and Kev, step into the shadows and welcome the new breed of White Trash that’s just driven into town. Well, it’s only natural that we have to live the lifestyle now that we are moseying round NZ in our motorhome, living in trailer parks, sweetcakes! We’ve now had Beryl for almost a week and it’s actually been excellent so far. We feel like little snails with our home on our back as we meander our way across country, stopping off where we like, when we like, making a cup of tea at the side of the road - or even beans on toast if we’re feeling reckless and dangerous. The day we picked her up - we had to go find some basic necessities for Beryl - therefore ... read more

Me again... Financially not good, but as long as I remember to think in pounds not dollars it's not so much of a disaster in the scheme of things. It's little consolation to be told that the car could sell for $4500 in September but now $1800 is a good offer! Anyway, to get some certainty and to preserve my sanity (what is left of it) I am accepting the offer and will get the cash tomorrow (and try not to get mugged on my way to a bank or Foreign exchange place). It's worked out that I would have been better off renting a car, by about 500 pounds or so, but not to worry.... too much, what's done is done and all that. And I've put a car on the road in better condition ... read more

Well I had a day to just sight see in the city yesterday. I slept in which I haven't done much on this vacation. Then got up and went walking around downtown. Had to stop at Starbucks because its the only coffee shop in NZ where you can get a real cup of coffee for a reasonable price. I'll have a double tall Mocha. Instead of I'll have a micro sized "Flat White" that costs $3.50. You'd have to drink 3 of them to get one 12 oz Starbucks equivalent. Yes, I'm a coffee snob from Seattle (o: Anyway, after looking through downtown I pulled my bike out and went out the waterfront trail. I had ridden that trail to a suburb called Mission Bay when I first arrived. Today the weather was beautiful so I ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Taupo March 9th 2006

To date, miserable weather has prevented us from doing our intended exploits in Taupo. 100kmph winds and snow at 1200m has meant that our planned hike across the Tongariro Crossing (between two large volcanic peaks) has been cancelled for the past three days. Also failed to skydive (bad weather - not incompetence) on Tuesday, so we opted for a leisurely 16km trip from Taupo to Huka Falls taking in the Craters of the Moon. Huka Falls is NZ's largest volume waterfall with 270m3 squeezing through a 15m gap every second. All very technical - it's a lot anyway... True to current form, it poured with rain on our trip out. Seems the weather predictions have been back to front so far (good weather on south island and wet and windy in the north island). Let's hope ... read more

I bought the cutest yogurt maker! (http://www.easiyo.com/) Apparently it is totally common here - I picked it up in one of your average grocery stores in a rather on the small side town. You just add the mix and water, or milk and bit of yogurt you already have, to the small container, put boiling water in the big container, then put in the small, and wait 12-20 hrs! Easy!! And tasty! Yesterday Mom and I went over to Keri Keri and got some green lipped muscles to take home and make - yum! We also stopped by The Wherehouse, which is kinda like WalMart - their bags say price rollback or some such thing, their stuff is super cheap (in both senses), and most of their employees are women of color. Ick. It was even ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Wanaka March 9th 2006

Have been sampling lots of random activities since I left the Stray bus (maybe those teenagers were a sensible influence after all!). First I went to glaciers and played in big spiky shoes at crawling round and walking on ice. Got a helicopter up there which was also very cool. In Wanaka I've just been going mental and did mountain biking round the lake (soooo beautiful) - the tourists were all pointing at me like I was some some of local mentalist. Then did a bit od walking. Then learnt how to rock climb. This was amazing. I wore my spiderman watch especially and was trying very hard to be as good as spiderman himself, but I think it was more a job of hanging on for dear life. Especially on this massive boulder we had ... read more

Now that I am working in one of a handful of hotels in the township, I will be staying in Fox Glacier until the end of the busy tourist season, about the second week of May. The town is so small with the number of permanent village residents at 255, and basically just caters for the tourists that are travelling through, and they often don't stay longer than one night. Therefore the job in the hotel is co-share which means I am working full-time hours, on average forty hours a week, serving in the restaurant, making beds and housekeeping the fifty-one rooms. The accommodation provided at very cheap rent includes three meals a day e.g. cereal, fruit, full-english for breakfast, pasta with garlic bread for lunch and dinner of lamb shanks with mashed potatoes and veg ... read more
