The west coast of New Zealand is deceivingly long. The coastal views rival any in the world, but the land is barren and the towns are few and far between. It's perfect for campervan traveling but I've heard that hitchhiking there is difficult because there are so few cars. So instead, we opted to take a 12-hour long Intercity bus from Nelson, stop for two nights at Franz Josef, and continue on another bus 7 hours to Wanaka the next day. This is far longer than it needs to take. 40-minute stops at cafes, "comfort stops" every hour, and incessant, inane descriptions from the driver make it harder than it needs to be. The buses are comfortable and in the winter only half full. I had plenty of podcasts to listen to, but they were often ... read more

The sensation of a bath getting hotter by the second rather than cooler is psychologically invigorating. The scolding water trickles from a board under my bum and up the sides of the tub. Like a frog slowly coming to a boil, I acclimate to the increasing of temperature. How much more can I stand it? I think to myself. I smile at the challenge, but I know I am not capable of boiling alive. Just in case, the cool tap water waits in the hose fixed above the bath. I close my eyes and feel a few more bubbles of heat swim across my sides as they rise. Thanks to a massive cyclone that came through the area a year ago, I can see the stars rise through the brush. Three huge Nikau palm trees tower ... read more

Geo: -43.3891, 170.182It all started with a sneeze. Nat down. Suspected broken neck and paralysis. Only 8am. Still time enough for a quick morning stroll before we head down to Franz Joseph for a helicopter ride and glacier hike. Its only a couple hours south and only 10 minutes to the beach. Wrong. The path to the beach is covered in mud. Deep mud. Deep enough to swallow and break my thongs. We saw a baby horse. That was pretty cool. By the time we got back to our hotel for departure and Id checked our route I realized we were behind schedule. It was further than I thought. We needed to average a speed of 260km p/hr to make it to our Glacier Hike on time. Oh and Nats life is flashing before her eyes ... read more

Of dat ... read more

The smoke alarm in our unit at Beach View Motel, Rapahoe was not connected to the local fire station. How do I know this? Well I burnt the toast again and fired up the smoke alarm......again! I have thought about why I do this so often and it has always been my third piece of toast that sets the alarm off as Gretchen only has two pieces leaving my third in the toaster alone getting much more toasted than if there was another piece alongside. Gretchen apologised profusely to the owner when we checked out but she shrugged it off saying that her husband is always setting their smoke alarm off too for the same reason. The day has dawned overcast and the forecast is for drizzle which is quite a contrast from yesterday. We sat ... read more

While seemingly the rest of the country is being hammered by a strong south-westerly and showers with snow on the Central Plateau, we, on the West Coast of the South Island are bathed in bright sunshine. With just a short drive today down to Rapahoe, north of Greymouth, we enjoyed another long lie in bed listening to the post election interviews on Newstalk ZB. Breakfast was again leisurely and this morning we opened the kitchen window a little to ensure that any well fired toast didn’t set the smoke alarm off again. Our holiday home certainly had all that we needed and we would come back and stay again when we are in this part of the coast again. The drive into Westport from Waimangaroa was a fairly straight run of 10km except for a railway ... read more

One of the more pleasurable experiences while one is on holiday is to wake in the morning to a view that is new to you and the sun shining. And so it was this morning in our cosy holiday home in Waimangaroa. We are a short distance back from the beach so the view of the sea is in the distance but the native NZ pigeon or Kereru was sitting in the tree right outside the lounge breakfasting on berries was a delight to see. We very occasionally see them far away in tree tops at home but not as close as here. With no weekend housework to do we lay in listening to the radio interviews of the victorious and vanquished from the National Election yesterday. The status quo will prevail for another 3 years. It has been nearly 12 months since our last ‘holiday’ and so it is time to recharge the work batteries and take a break. This time we are off to the South Island and plan a quick circuit of the island starting and ending back in Christchurch and getting as far south as Alexandra for the spring Blossom Festival while staying with Chris and Marilyn(Chris being Gretchen’s brother) Our dear friends Ruth and Owen turned up at 6.30am this morning to chauffer us to Tauranga Airport in readiness for our flight to Christchurch. The Bombardier Q300 is no Airbus A-380 which we flew to and from Europe a year ago and we squeezed into seat 13 A & B(didn’t realise airlines still used ‘13’ in their seat numbers)right in the back of the plane, any further ... read more

Geo: -42.4576, 171.206 The intercity bus picked me up from Yha to go to Greymouth for the Transalphine train to Christchurch and on the way we stopped at Harihari, Hokitika and Kumara junction. We arrived at the Greymouth station just when the train arrived and all the passengers were coming out. The train was delayed for 40 mins so we had to wait outside till the train was ready and finally the train took off. TranzAlpine train. The TranzAlpine is run by New Zealand train operator Kiwi Rail which runs once daily between Christchurch, Arthurs Pass, Greymouth and back passing the mountain scenery of the Southern Alps, the journey takes 4½ hours. The Seats in the train were very comfortable with clean glass windows for viewing the scenery, there were open viewing platforms to look at the ... read more
