Geo: -43.3891, 170.182 After checking out of the hostel and I waited outside for the bus at 9.20. The Newman's coach was supposed to pick me up from YHA at 9.39 am but at 9.55, I saw one Newmans bus going straight towards the main stop near the lake so I panicked and I called the Intercity bus as I thought they had forgotten me as I was the only one person being picked up from YHa. The idea of being stranded was very daunting but I was very relieved when they told me that the driver was late. After 15 mins, I was finally on the bus and I got a window seat but than many people got on at Ardmore st at the lake and the bus was full, I was lucky to get ... read more

Hey guys, there was this great fisherman who lives on the West Coast since four generations! He explained what fishing torpedo is all about. There is this big line that can reach out up to 2km in the sea. There are 25 hooks fixed at the end of the line. It stays there for approx.1 hour. Then u check the prey. And we caught 6 sharks! Spotted fish that are known as lemon fish. U get them for 50 bucks/kilo. The white spots on the fish mean the shark has no teeth and can't bite u. I was told that in Europe fisherman cut the fins off(to make soup of it) and throw the body away to the sea- That's a crime against nature. Thank u Dennis for showing me your way of life!... read more

Geo: -43.4643, 170.018The only reason people go to Fox Glacier is the overpowerig presence of Mount Cook, Mount Tasman, Fox Glacier, Franz Josef Glacier and all the accompanying stuff of mountains and snow. And the best way to see all this is by helicopter - given their ability to fly high and slow and land on the snowfields high in the mountains. So we squeezed into this little helicoper together who two other passengers and the pilot and up we went. The photos speak for themselves really. Mountain peaks clad in snow, glaciers, mountain huts high on the peaks, getting out onto the snow. All brilliant stuff - you can tell from Peter's smile he thought this was much the best way to get up a ountain, not all that walking stuff. On our return we found our rather ... read more

Geo: -42.4576, 171.206Today we drop off our car and board the world famous Trans Alpine Railway. This trip is often regarded to be one of the world's great train journeys for the scenery through which it passes. The journey is 223 kilometers one-way, taking about four and a half hours. There are 19 tunnels and four viaducts. We ask for a late checkout as the West Coast weather has not improved and it is bucketing down. With 4 hours to kill before we board the train we catch a cab to the Monteith Brewery, a new establishment that has an open door policy, good food, good beer and a big open fire. On arriving they have canceled the tour due to a lack of patrons so we order a beer tasting plate and some yummy tapas to ... read more

Dat was duidelijk even wennen. Luck stayed with us.

Geo: -41.7581, 171.602I can feel the wind blowing through my hair – all ¾ of an inch of it - as the skies clear up and we hit the rugged west coast of the South Island. We are scooting up the coast, staying one night at each location until we get to the point at which we head slightly inland and north. It is exhilarating, freeing, joyful! We have had a run of glorious sunshine and cool breezes and all we do is drive, locate a walk or two to view various landscapes and stunning vistas and stay in unique and friendly backpacker hostels. Our favourites are Global Village and Beaconstone Eco Lodge. I now ask each hostel if they have a cat (to which I am intensely allergic), guiding our decisions about places to stay. ... read more

Geo: -43.4643, 170.018It was time to continue the journey down the west coast, known for it's rain, but in our case, once again we were lucky with the clear blue sky. We only had a few hours till we reached Franz Joseph Glacier. We were watching the weather forecast closely though as the forecast was for rain which didn't quite fit in with our Ice Climbing plans on Fox Glacier. We walked up to both Glaciers, Franz and Fox which were both impressive in their own ways. Franz is more steeper and rugged whereas Fox is more mellow and smooth. That night we had to find a place to park the camper, but in a small town like Fox Glacier, finding a spot that you can camp with out paying is near impossible. We tried at ... read more

GLACIERLAND TO WESTPORT We decided to slow our pace of travel, and moved on north, stopping at a town called ROSS. There were big gold strikes here in the mid 1800s, and we went around a one hour heritage walk around the old mining area. The visitors centre will show you how to pan for gold, and you can buy pans and try out your gold prospecting for real in the local creeks. You might say all the gold will have gone, but there is a commercial mining company on the edge of town still mining for gold – AND, it it believed that there is $700 million worth of gold in the gravel under the town. The mining company wish to relocate the whole town to get access to it, but have been turned down ... read more

Geo: -43.3891, 170.182Concerned that I am not as enthused as I need to be wrt the stunning landscapes that NZ offers up, DH takes back the pen.Early the next day, and a big left-side drive day for Vic. We are very appreciative of the nice weather that is back with us. I love the mornings here particularly. The sun coming up over the mountains onto the fields of cows and sheep, and the sparkling coastal glimpses. To me its " God, it's great to be alive" scenery. Maybe I am a little homesick for Canada but geographically, this is the second most beautiful country I have seen and it reminds me a lot of home.First stop on the journey today is the longest swing bridge in New Zealand. At over 100 metres in length near the ... read more
