We left Fox Glacier with barely a glance backwards and headed southward down State Highway 6. We must have crossed at least a hundred single lane bridges before we pulled in for the evening. I believe that their only purpose was to keep drivers from drifting off due to the tedium of the road. For at least one hundred kilometres we passed nothing but trees. No settlements (not even an isolated house) and no roads to either the left or the right. Trees lined our way; dense woodland right up to the edge of the road. It felt dark and gloomy, the rain was coming down and I was bored. We stopped for the night at the one place we could along the road - a Department of Conservation Campsite by Lake Paringa. This lake was ... read more

I chose to go to Wanaka instead of to the party/ski town, Queenstown, but found that there isn't much reason to go to Wanaka in the winter unless you ski or if you have the proper equipment to summit Mt. Roy in snow. I'd already been told that so it was no surprise. The lake is nice but Tekapo is far better. I did a trail run along the lake for some nice views and then decided to get out of there the next day. I forgot to take any photos there.... read more

Hi Bloggers, Got up super early had a quick breakfast of porridge and headed off to the parking area to start our early morning walk to the Franz Josef Glacier. It was a 1h30 walk and gave us amazing scenery to take photos of!!! We beat the weather and got a nice clear view. Lucky we got up so early as when we finished the walk the fogs were coming in quickly!! The Fox Glacier is only about 30 mins’ down the road so we headed there to see if the weather was better to do a helicopter ride and if not do one of the walks to the glacier. We did another 1h30 walk, to an alpine viewing area looking over the Fox glacier. The walk was great, going over waterways of crystal blue waters. ... read more

We are in an area of New Zealand known as Central Otago. The country is not divided into states, but rather districts or regions (I asked a New Zealander for the proper term and he didn't really know, so I suppose it's not that important.). We are in the central part of, "Otago". This area is mountainous and littered with natural lakes. We are staying in a town called Wanaka on the southern edge of an enormous (I mean 26 miles long by 6 miles wide huge) freshwater lake, surprisingly known as - you guessed it - Lake Wanaka. We were lucky to find a B&B where we have the entire top floor of a house to ourselves, including an expansive deck that looks out to the lake. It's so pretty. The hosts are very kind ... read more

We didn't have wifi yesterday, so I didn't get a chance to blog. I wish I had, because yesterday was such an enjoyable day for us. Spirits were high and we were in full memory making mode. We made the drive from Fox Glacier to Wanaka today, and when we arrived at our B&B and reconnected with wifi, we found out that despite the efforts of our pet sitter, my parents, and our vet, one of our kitties passed away today. To say our spirits are dampened is an understatement. As overwhelmed as we were last year dealing with our losses and taking on the care of two of my sister's cats and grandma's cat in addition to our own cats, we love each one of them and do our best to provide them with a ... read more

Left our laundry drying this morning and walked into Arrowtown, the prettiest town we have come across and the place we have felt most at home in. Have come back here again as its so lovely, we've even found the perfect river for Honey and Milo and Rebecca has made herself known in an amazing furniture shop where they design their own pieces, including a gorgeous curved sofa! Really bizarre sitting in the spring sunshine drinking coffee next to flowering daffodils, lupins and aquilegia whilst hearing talk of getting ready for Christmas. Freya went panning for gold and soon found her fortune. Later that morning took the Cardrona Alpine Pass over the mountain North towards Wanaka. Really twisty mountain roads with huge drops- time for Stuart to drive! Although the views made it worth it. Lake ... read more

Turns out that Maori names are supposed to be pronounced with no emphasis on any syllable. Hence "Wanaka" actually sound like "Hanukkah". We definitely were singing that damn Adam Sandler song the whole time. We drive through Haast Pass and turn onto the most beautiful drive I could possibly imagine. The road climbs up a mountain and switchbacks and then meanders its way down. We were in a pass surrounded by Lake Hawea on one side and Lake Wanaka on the other. The water is so blue it's criminal, and the white capped mountains make reflections on the glassy water. If we wanted to capture every beautiful moment we would never have made it to our lodge. I can tell this was Anjali's "aha I now get NZ" moment. Mine was the glacier. We both love ... read more

October 9 – Travel days are those days that really test the mettle of a relationship. (Or is it medal? Because you surely deserve one, if you survive these!) These days always start early. (Michele hates this!) Something always goes wrong. Today we have to find and fold the clothes that were too wet to pack the night before because the dryer broke down, and we had to hang them up all over the condo. Now all this stuff must be packed into the suitcases that seem to have shrunk since arriving. Back on the road, and up and over the Crown Road again which was very trying for both passenger and pilot. We did stop and take a few photos as it really was beautiful. The bracken-covered hills reminded me of one of those boiled ... read more

October 7 & 8 - I spent two and a half weeks in Australia mostly in shorts and a t-shirt and never got so much as a scratch! Australia! Where there are more things that can kill you than anywhere on the planet! I did see a poisonous snake, a crocodile and one spider, but they all seemed totally disinterested in me. But in New Zealand, while covered head to toe in several layers of clothing with only my hands and face peeking out, I got five bites on my hands from these nasty little sand flies. Itchy, painful bites that I slathered with itch cream to no effect and kept me up at night. Several days later, I noticed my hand was quite red and swollen around one of the bites. So I checked with ... read more
