Happy St. Patties day everyone! I hope you had a great one, I know I did. Jo, Jason, Jordan (man I know a lot of boys with names that start with J) Kate and I went on a backpacking weekend to Lake Tekapo and then headed up to Mt. Cook (the highest peek in New Zealand) Lake Tekapo It was, once again, a beautiful drive to the lake. It’s about 2 hrs south west of Christchurch. Some have compared it to Tahoe...I don’t know Tahoe has its own beauty you just cant compare to, but it was very beautiful. We kinda illegally camped on the shore of the lake. hehe. There is something adventures about driving down dirt roads that at any min may just end and we would end up in the lake - given ... read more

Hello again. I'm in Mount Cook at the moment, having an afternoon off (!). I had planned to go kayaking on a glacial lake complete with small icebergs etc at the end of a glacier but a tumble this morning when I was out walking has put paid to that. So I have ice on my leg instead of paddling past it. Just cuts and bruises, nothing too disastrous just very sore and a kind woman on reception at the YHA cleaned me up as my attempts were somewhat basic. First aid course when I get home.... A few things have gone awry in the last week or so, just in case you were getting too envious of me having fun ALL the time: I slipped coming out of the shower last week - just a ... read more

Rangitata Gorge River rafting Life doesnt' get much better. I caught the Rangitata bus to the Rangitata lodge. We loaded my bike trailer and baggage into the bus. The bike got the front seat. I decided to bypass the trip out of town because drivers in Christchurch are nuts. I'm glad I did because it was 2 hours of flat boring landscape with lots of traffic. Anyway we arrived at a beautiful lodge perched on a hillside with lush green forest surrounding it. They fed us lunch so we'd have energy to paddle hard. Then we took a bus to the put in. A wide open river plane with mountains in the backdrop up stream. Stunning. I ended up in a boat with an Israeli couple and a couple from the UK. Both very friendly. It ... read more

I ventured on alone to Mount Cook and Lake Tekapo - the drive from Queenstown was awesome, with some scary bends but stunning scenery changing from lush and green to yellow dry with bright blue lakes. I did a beautiful walk up to a glacial lake in the White Horse area of Mount Cook, the sun shone the whole way (a first for one of my walks) and I got to see glaciers, ice bergs in the lake and all those other glacial features we learnt in geography! Lake Tekapo itself had the gorgeous wee Church of The Good Shepard and a lake but that was pretty much it, so I made the most of the sunshine and relaxed with a book.... read more

Aoraki Naturally 36 hours in Mackenzie country. Star Gazing from the Mount John Observatory till 1am up early for horse trekking in the hills around Lake Tekapo then a 70 min flight over Mount Cook and the glaciers including Fox and Franz Joseph. All amazing and yes rather hectic after several very quiet days at the Naturist festival but as we have found you have to take advantage of the fine weather when it is here. Off at 6.30 the next morning to Mount Cook This was a sublime ride hard in parts but with views of the mountains and lake at all times with snow topped Mt Cook getting closer all the time. Great weather and even a slight tail wind to assist with the gradient. Ok we paid for it the next day with ... read more

In Queenstown. Just culled my photos via hookup onto this computer. Have actually snapped some 300. Have significantly reduced this sum. Have decided this will be a photo essay. More than my words. If I can resist... But what I will say, mmm, too much temptation to say too much.... Queenstown overwhelmed me on arrival - it is very tourist orientated - a shame. The view from my hostel, yes, I got the last double bed room available... is fantastic, notwithstanding the ugly plethora of apartments/ motels on the hillside overlooking the lake and mountains to our left... anyway, Deco's Backpackers - me - is up on high, quiet, a peaceful view, reflective moments beckon with the outlook. The scenery today and yesterday was magnificent, awesome, stark, lush, varied, even a bit frightening (the mountain ranges ... read more

Merry Christmas to you; I hope you all have had a wonderful day giving gifts, receiving presents, stuffing yourself with food and playing with the cardboard boxes. Christmas was just slightly diffeent for me this year, despite the fact i was in Mt Cook National Park. I went to bed late, and loe I woke up on Christmas Day to the sound of hiphop. "So you wanna be me, you bitch" is not the most christmassy of lyrics. No turkey, chocolate money or Mum's gorgeous Xmas cake, no presents to open or give, or Vicar of Dibley to watch on TV. In fact, I only heard the word 'christmas' mentioned 3 times all da. But, I have been treating myself to masses of feel-good food all week: chocolate, chocolate mousses, jelly, mince pies, caramel slices, popcorn, ... read more

We have got the hire car and we are now zooming around New Zealand. We have got a white Nissan Pulsar (which Tim says is the same as an Almera). It seems quite nice to drive although it is an automatic and does not seem to like going up hills that much! As they drive on the left here driving is not too taxing although they have this strange rule that you have to give way to traffic turning right when you are turning left. This has not really been an issue as there seems to be hardly any cars on the road. We hardly passed any on the 2.5 hour drive here. Lake Tekapo is lovely. It is a lake (surprise, surprise) with mountains in the background and lots of lupins of varying colours in ... read more
