The vegetation on the slopes is incredibly lush and dense and we keep expecting mountain gorillas to emerge - but no, wrong continent! We flew in over this area just 6 days ago, with beautiful blue skies. Sadly the weather isn't being quite so kind now with damp, drizzly conditions and some low level mist. We can't see Mount Cook nor any of the other snow-topped peaks, but there was a little blue sky gap this morning when we walked as close as we were allowed to go to the end of the Franz Josef glacier. This afternoon we walked down by the coast along the Okarito Trig Trail, lined by beautiful rainforest and had lovely views of the lagoons but none of the promised panoramic ones of glaciers and alps. One bonus of the mist ... read more

Franz Josef Glacier We continued through the town, across the Waiho River to the car park of the glacier. Unfortunately, the glacier has receded so much, we didn't have time to walk to the face. It's on my list of places to go when I come back to NZ next time. Franz Josef Glacier Village There was plenty of time before I had to be back at the hotel for dinner, so I went for a walk Franz Josef Glacier Village Fire Station Our Lady of the Alps Church St James Historic Church Waiho River I headed back to town, had dinner at the hotel and fell into a very comfy bed - I'd stay at the Scenic Franz Josef again! ... read more

Having the most hours sleep in one night for months I'm feeling surprisingly groggy as I set off to the meet up place at Glacier Kayaking's office along the street from my hostel. When I arrive I'm given an iPad tablet and have to fill in a health and safety/information questionnaire before being introduced to bearded Canadian Colin, one of our guides for the morning, who drives us to the lake we'll be kayaking on, Mapourika. Lawrence our other guide is already there setting up the equipment. We are an all female group, four kiwi friends, four Germans and me. As we are an odd number a volunteer is required to paddle solo, one of the German girls steps forward. And then the pairs have to decide who will be in charge of the foot pedal ... read more

So this is to be my first experience of the competition. Intercity didn't work right for me time wise for this next move from Wanaka to Franz Josef so I'm with their main competition Naked Bus. Stupid name for a company and one of the reasons for putting me off them over Intercity in the first instance and then on further investigation their worse reviews. But mostly because I could book earlier in advance with Intercity, and get in with my many $1 'golden tickets'. I'm not impressed when a minibus and trailer for luggage turns up. My back's still hurting from horse riding so four hours in rubbish knee room, uncomfortable seats is not my idea of fun. Luckily the passing scenery is stunning which helps take my mind off physical niggles. We are travelling ... read more

Zie ... read more

It rains in New Zealand. It rains a lot. It rains in such quantities at times that it feels like the entire Tasman Sea is being poured out on your head. This was our experience as we left Abel Tasman and it would continue to be our experience over the next few days as we drove down the West Coast... or "Wet Coast" as it is sometimes known. Leaving our hot shower, we drove from Moteuka to Hokitika. After overnighting in the cheapest motel we could find we went into the town. It had the small town feel common to many of New Zealand's settlements but it also had an artsy nature which was quite appealing. The first shop we went in was a glass blowing studio which had the most exquisite coloured glassware. The highlight ... read more

Dean jumped in the driver's seat, much to the girl's dismay, for the trip to Franz Josef. Winding our way up the mountains, past Coronet Peak (where the girls relived their skiing adventures once again) and with sensational views across to the Remarkables, we said goodbye to Queenstown and hello to glacier country. With no radio reception, the soundtrack accompanying our journey had the girls reaching for their headphones. The three CDs purchased at the Queenstown Salvos (from a VERY ORDINARY collection, mind you) were not worth the $6 we forked out. 'Rule Britannia - 40 years of great British music' could also be renamed as '11 bands you know playing 11 songs you don't'. That particular CD had the girls almost declaring a mutiny. The Tony Bennett & k. d. Lang 'wonderful world, sing-a-long of ... read more

Based on their ambivalence towards Fox Glacier, I wasn't confident about getting the girls to Franz Josef glacier. They did perk up once their devices were connected to the unlimited wifi at the motel and, with a good night's sleep under their belt, were fairly positive about the day's planned activities. I also thought a wee bit of bribery might also encourage them along - so it was frappes all round. Massive jugs of dairy delight (milk, ice cream and cream) flavoured with caramel or chocolate and they were putty in my hands. The sugar induced rush enabled them to run up Sentinel Rock like it was a challenge on The Biggest Loser. Taking on the glacier, they made the forty minutes ascent look easy. They did, however, observe that the glacier was even "more boring" ... read more

But if you're making the long drive down the West Coast, Franz Josef or Fox Glacier are reasonable stops to avoid driving all day. The hike to the base of the glacier is nice but heavily trafficked, since it's so easy. The town is quaint but there's not much to do. The Franz Josef Glacier looks incredible but you can't walk right up to it or pay a reasonable fee to walk on it on a tour that provides equipment. Because the glacier is quickly receding, the only way to do a tour is by taking an expensive helicopter that lands in a safer spot.... read more
