Første stop ... read more

Just preparing my stuff to fly tomorrow. Can hardly believe that I can still carry my bags as I think some serious oestrogen has kicked in, causing me to go out on a retail therapy frenzy. However, my possessions seem to be going through some weird rotational process; every time I buy something I found I have lost something , thus the space in my pack remains constant.... Anyhow, the up-to-date losses are as follows: 2 pairs of sunglasses ( 1 lost, 1 squashed) 1 watch ( came swimming with dolphins with me but enjoyed the experience less than me and has steadfastly refused to work since) 1 sandal strap ( the one for the other foot remains in my pack but unsure why!) 1 white top (disappearance noted tonight) 1 earring ( bought over here ... read more

Who wants to turn 21 in a country where the drinking age is 18! Poor Curtis. But I think we made it a pretty good day. Kate and I made him a cake (I even put in some of my prized Reese's Pieces). We made a picnic lunch and headed out to Summner beach. It was a freakishly warm day in the middle of rain and 10* weather (50'sF). After lying in the sun we headed over the mountain to Taylor's Mistake Beach. I fell in love! This is where I am going to live during some part of my life. It reminded me a LOT of Capitola (one of my fav little places in Cali). The house on the hill, it will be mine someday I swear!! We ended the night by going out to ... read more

Since my last entry 30 mins ago I just popped to the photo shop to get a CD burned of my Canyon Swing shots. Being part show-off, and part keen to get photos uploaded so I can send my cds back to the UK, I have rushed back to the internet caff to add these two beauties, which show me stumbling off the edge (very ungracefully!) and catapulting off into the unknown at 150kph. Yes I know I look very uncool on them; but at least I did it!And yes!- that is David Beckham ponytail I am sporting ( hides the lack of hairbrushing nicely). Just a quickie this one 'cos I really need to go and forage for some food......... ... read more

Ok, the final verdict was over 50 sandfly bites ( see last entry). I am especially humiliated by the one which came up on the end of my nose ( how did they get away with it?!). Turns out you need DINT in your repellant, not DEET as for mossies. I got it wrong and paid the price. I have a sneaking suspicion they might have even liked the smell of the DEET, if you're gonna do it in style why not just wear an insect attractant...??!! Anyhow, I am now one big walking, talking insect bite which smells of Savlon. Its the only thing which takes away the sting, although admittedly getting easier. I'm now back in Christchurch, sorting out mundanities such as haircuts before I move on to Asia. I had a whistlestop tour of ... read more

We left Bluff at the southern point of South Island to drive through the scenic countryside of the Catlins. Camped on a deserted campsite, visited a fossilised forest and saw Elephant Seals on Nugget Point before reaching Dunedin. Stayed at gorgeous Backpackers - essentially we had a house to ourselves. The next day we drove down the Otago Peninsula - failed to see the Royal Albatros but went on to see both blue and yellow eyed penguins from specially made hides. A lengthy walk down a deserted beach allowed us to see further penguins followed by a cold walk back in the dark with bare feet. Had a lengthy drive to Mount Cook village where we camped the night prior to being woken up at 6am by the noisy Kea (alpine parrot) - concerned that they ... read more

Can't believe my time in New Zealand is over :o( Travelled to Mount Cook on Sunday. Would normally have had great views of Mount Cook during the journey, but unfortunately lots of low lying cloud meant we couldn't see much at all. Did the Kea Point track walk and managed to catch occasional glimpses of the mountains. In the afternoon, we went on an organised trip to the Tasman Glacier terminal lake. A half hour walk took us to the lake where we then boarded a small boat. The cloud had lifted so we now had views of Mount Cook and Mount Tasman, even if they were against a grey sky. We cruised around the many icebergs floating on the lake. Unlike those in the sea, only ten percent of the iceberg was visible on the ... read more

After a final drunken night...and losing badly at a quiz night....it was time to say farewell to Mr Kevin! Tears were held back (just for a change on my behalf!), a quick hug and "see you later" then we went our seperate ways :-( Alone again but in a backpacking world I headed back to Foley Towers, my home for the next couple of weeks. Determined not to wallow and miss Mr Kevin I joined in with the backpacking chat and met some other lone travellers. With only a day or so to start the job hunt I was soon catching up with long lost backpacking buddies. Amy and Polly headed back down to Christchurch so we managed to catch up over a few days, then Luke came into town so we had a little reunion! ... read more

...well, not quite, sorry. I am in fact in Christchurch, but with my eyes half shut and my head on one side I could have convinced myself I was back: take a look at the pictures. It is not surprising that it is similar; Christchurch or ChCh, as the locals call it, was founded by some Anglican members/fellows of Christchurch (College), Oxford in the middle of the 19th century. I really enjoyed wandering around (and in and out of the Japanese tourists who arrived in swarms) this well-ordered city. It is built on a very Anglican grid system centred around the cathedral. I meandered into what used to be the University of Canterbury, where Rutherford conducted his preliminary experiments into splitting the atom; wandered around the very good Art Gallery; dallied in the Museum of Canterbury; ... read more

A couple days after I posted my last blog entry, I left the orchard. I wish I had some funny story to tell you, like I got fired for throwing apples or something, but unfortunately I don't. I left because my allergies were killing me on the farm, and after a week of sneezing 24 hours a day I just had to get out of there. I honestly wouldn't have left otherwise, apple picking is garbage but we met some cool people. Actually come to think of it, it was only the 2 Irish guys that were cool. Other than them, there was a Japanese couple who barely spoke english and would pick the apples on Alan's trees, a weird Finnish guy who wore a shoelace around his leg and thought everyone was stealing his bread, ... read more
