As we have come to learn......... YOU ARE ONLY AS FIT AS THE HILLS OF NZ TELL YOU YOU ARE AND THE HILLS OF NZ ARE ONLY AS FLAT AS HOW FIT YOUR BODY TELLS YOU YOU ARE.! Well we have been pluging along quite well. Our time in Kaikoura turned out to be pretty quiet, no dolphins, no sharks. As it turned out it is very important to book these trips well ahead of time, even though it is no longer peak season. We did get in a nice hike with a trip to the nearby fur seal colony. Most of the seals couldn't have cared less that we were hanging around, they just laid in the sun like sleeping dogs. There were a couple clowns though who really seemed to enjoy the attention, making ... read more

Arrived into Christchurch in the afternoon and arranged to meet up with my friend Nick who also used to live in Dubai. We went out to the strip which is right in the centre of town and lined with bars. We hung out at sticky fingers and di lusso. The funny thing about Christchurch is because its reasonably small everyone seems to know everyone. Kinda scary really! We decided we would go out for a drive to Lyttleton (about forty five minutes away) which is the main port where all the boats come in. There wasn't much going on but we found this little funky bar with a few drunken people and russian sailors. Not the sort of place i would like to hang out on my own, put it that way. Stayed for a drink ... read more

When people ask us, “How are you finding New Zealand?” we often struggle to answer the question. A move into a different culture and climate has its ups and downs, and the array of feelings is hard to capture in a short reply. Instead of blurting out a lengthy response, we have coined the statement “It is the same … but different.” We have not moved to a third world country, where we might be lacking in the finer conveniences of the western world. In fact, in some ways we have upgraded. We can’t imagine how we ever lived without high-speed internet or an electric kettle. What we do find is that New Zealand doesn’t sell Stoneyfield yogurt or Teddy’s peanut butter ... but we are getting used to Meadow Fresh yogurt and Sanitarium peanut butter. ... read more

My birthday was absolutely wonderful and thanks to everyone from home and their wishes. I had to work in the morning, but I had one of my customers bring in a basket of flowers and wine for me. That was a little odd though because I had not even been at my job but about a week. But, it was still a nice surpise. I went to dinner with my friends here and they suprised me with a cake that had Happy Birthday Amy written on it and put in 23 candles!! If I had to spend my birthday away from home, this is exactly the way I would want to do it. I quit my night job. My boss was crazy and I didn’t feel like dealing with it. I am still working full time ... read more

Who Am I Kidding - I Can’t Surf Matt and Nick were keen to learn to surf so I’d promised to take them both out when the swell was good. The forecast predicted a new swell arriving on Tuesday arvo, so we headed to the surf shop, rented a couple a long boards and headed out to “Taylors’ Mistake”. Odd name for a beach I thought. After giving them the safety briefing - * Rule 1: When you’re walking out always keep your board beach side of you,* Rule 2: when you fall off, cover your head, grab your nuts and pray for a miracle, and * Rule 3: No bleeding in the water, the great whites love it!!I explained the importance of looking for rips before you paddle-in, and then we all headed in together. ... read more

Christchurch is one of the oldest cities in New Zealand. Old means from the mid 19th century. Some buildings, the cathedral and the university mainly, have been build in an old-englisch style. But if you imagine Christchurch like one of those beautiful small towns in England, like Oxford, Stratford, Exeter, Cambridge, Canterbury, etc. then you are wrong. The university buildings are quite nice but otherwise it's a pretty modern city with little old charm. An interesting fact for physicists is that Ernest Rutherford studied here for some time. Since he had a couple of disagreements with the local university folks of his time he got his laboratory assigned in a small room under a stairway. This room can still be visited today, it's knows as "Rutherfords Den". But in later years when he made his famous ... read more

Now here's something. How unfair is it that no matter how confident, cocky and funny you are with girls that you've absolutely zero attraction to, as soon as you meet one that you like you turn into this Hugh Grant-esque, blubbering halfwit? Or maybe it's just me. Anyway, after the kind of performance in Queenstown that would have Chandler cringing, it must've been by default that I ended up travelling for a bit with this really hot girl from Cape Town called Debs who was deadly with a capital D and small eadly. No trip to the South Island would be complete without a sail down Milford Sound, a fiordland so dramatically striking that our guide advised us to rest our eyeballs on the journey out as we'd be taking them for some treat that day. ... read more

Well it's been a while! Shaheen and I are back in Christchurch now, after having worked for a month on the Banks Peninsula at Onuku Farm Hostel (which is the best hostel in NZ in case you wanted to know). It's good to be traveling again, but I'm definitely going to miss it there... One day I will actually put some pictures of up. Hopefully I'll get the chance once I'm in Wellington. Right now, I'm staying at Coachman Backpackers, right near Cathedral Square. It's really nice and new and definitely refreshing after having stayed in a tent for the past few weeks. It was nice just to sit back and watch TV for a change, so thanks to Christin for suggesting the place! Tomorrow we'll be headed west to Lake Tekapo and then pretty much ... read more
