mad dog mo - Sally Morgan

Sally Morgan Oh no! Serious jetlag! Hence sitting looking VERY rough at a hostel internet terminal at Venice Beach, LA, at 5am while my roommates try to out-snore one another.Following much exhausting clucking and arm-flapping ( to no avail) I have learned lesson 1- don't try to discuss the current world situation of bird-flu if language differences preclude even swapping the most general niceties- it aint gonna happen!!
Anyhow, currently embarking on a round the world tour involving Los Angeles, New' Zealand, Thailand, China overland through Himalayas and then into India for up to 6 months.Far too old to disclose my age (!!) but have given up the cushy life security ( or rat race- whichever way you see it) to discover more of the world, and hopefully a bit more about myself! Hope you enjoy the read.....

Apparently I am supposed to keep quiet about the '2 sniks fighting a couple of days ago', in case I scare other residents. Now one snake is bad enough but all out snake warfare is a little bit challenging. I'm back at the monastery I visited several years ago, due to leave today but apparently there is a random general strike and no taxis, buses or any public transport. So, Im temporarily stranded. I have just witnessed an amusing monk/goat/dog episode, with a stray goat having wandered into the dining room. The monastery dogs gave chase, and the monks, trying to [View Full Entry]

Actually, it's not but it made a great title! The only very nasty things are presently a) The overwhelming heat b) Scam merchants scamming away at full scam c) The alleyways full of dung/litter and flies ( often quite smelly). So, I arrive in Varanasi early morning and get picked up by a hotel driver. Once again smug, I'm thinking 'this is too easy'. However, silly me, I should realise nothing is straightforward over here. On reaching the hotel I am told the air- con is not working but I can have a room with a fan, however there are intermittent power [View Full Entry]

Ok, so 2 years on and I'm back in India. I always promised I'd come back to finish off my last trip. For those who don't know the last one ended in St Thomas's hospital , London, being treated for giardia and Salmonella paratyphi...probably due to my far-too-intimate knowledge of the inner workings of the Indian toilet system ( see last blog!) So, back into Delhi, it seemed appropriate that the first place I should visit would be the Sulabh International museum of toilets. I know, I know, strange place to visit, and obviously a way off the tourist trail as my [View Full Entry]

Take your pick of dunnys...
Toilet etiquette must be closely followed...
More toileting rules...

I can't believe it happened, I really can't. My foot still feels septic. I feel like one of the great unwashed. Now I know how the guy who fell down the Glastonbury long drops feels. Yup, that's right.....I fell into one of the squats.... Long story. It was hot. I was unbalanced with my daysack on my back. You know it's gonna happen, and to prolong the agony, it happens in slow motion, and you can do diddly squat about it. I felt like a weeble ( remember them?) rocking backwards and forwards, trying to get my balance, trying to stop [View Full Entry]

ok ok , I score very few marks out of 10 for adding recent blog entries, but the good news is I'm still alive!!!! I just survived a bus journey from hell, (which really probably was very cushy by Indian standards) from Mcleod Ganj. Only problem was the aircon didn't work, so we had to open the window, but.....it was monsooning! So...it was a choice of not breathing , as the air was stifling, or spending 11 hours soaked to the skin. I spent the whole night opening and closing the window by various degrees depending on rainfall, with a soggy [View Full Entry]

6am at Chandigarh bus station.....
Christchurch, Shimla
Downtown Shimla

I never knew that monkeys could buy plane tickets!....but today we had to prevent one from coming with us to Delhi. There we were on the airport shuttle bus when suddenly a monkey appeared and shot towards the open doors , until it got shooed away at around 2 feet from the bus. Monkeys over here are aggressive and potentially rabid, so not good to have on baord! I got caught behind mr and mrs designerwear India, who were busy shooting a full length action picture on how to board a plane. Smiling, waving , zooming in, panning across the wings- [View Full Entry]

well..these rickshaw drivers can be vicious in the vicinity of ankles, so I got my armed protection squad ready...
so what's the first thing you do when you can limp down the road again? Yep that's right, attend a Maoist rally, y'know the sort of thing the Foreign Office warns you against (Oops). Some little piccies before I blog majorly again! [View Full Entry]

Maoists
Maoists come to Thamel!
Boys and their toys.

This is now my number one favourite Asia saying, spouted by any tradesman/vendor who thinks he can pass off any old rubbish as the stuff you are looking for....the 'but different' clause is often added by myself when it becomes obvious the black-and-2-sizes-larger equivalent of the red top one's looking for isn't quite the same. Nevertheless, the sellers look truly confused and affronted when you don't want the totally inappropriate product they are touting, as if you are mad for not wanting to wear a tent in the wrong colour!!!'Good price, good price', they mutter. 'I no want- it not right', [View Full Entry]

Preparing body for funeral pyre- Kathmandu
Who
Clothes washing in river - Dhulikel, Nepal

My Tibet-induced good karma and Buddhist concepts of respecting all life forms now come with certain exclusions: mosquitoes and Japanese tourists. I'm not sure how many places a mossie can hide in a hotel room but mine is certainly playing a great game of hide during the day and seek during the middle of the night. The pre-bed ritual involves a hop/scour round for the afore-mentioned beast, and every day I come to the conclusion that he/she has finally popped her clogs and I will sleep in peace. Not a chance. At 2 am sharp every day I awake to a [View Full Entry]
