We're just back from a great weekend in the Bay of Islands, in the north of New Zealand. We went with Magic, a company that specialises in backpacker tours and covers the whole country, and takes you to places that you might not find if you were to drive yourself. On the way to Paihia (the town we were staying in) we went up the west coast of Northland, through forests and past lovely beaches on the Tasman Sea. We stopped to visit Tane Mahuta, the biggest tree in New Zealand (it's massive!). It was a long drive up the west coast, but we finally got to Paihia at about 4.30 (having left Auckland at 8 in the morning...) The next day was an early start as we were going to Cape Reinga, the most northerly ... read more

We had a wee flat warming last Wednesday night, and invited all the people we know in Auckland! That made a huge party of six people, and since we all had work the next day (except Graeme who had an interview) it wasn't a late night. Here are some pictures to mark the night.... read more

We went on a day trip to Devonport, which is directly across the harbour from Auckland city. It's part of Greater Auckland, but is a separate town. It's a wee holiday place, with lots of Victorian buildings, and was a nice place for a stroll. We found a pub that sells Tennants lager as a speciality beer, isn't that funny! Devonport is built on two volcanic cones, and we climbed up one of them. We took lots of boring pictures of the Auckland skyline (which I'm not going to bore you all with) but in the other direction you could see for miles. The closest island to Devonport is Rangitoto, another volcano, but one which has only been there for about 600 years. Geographers among you - isn't that a great picture of a volcano?!... read more

Hello! We've had a busy week job-hunting, so there's not a whole lot to report. Last weekend we went up the Skytower (the tallest tower in the Southern Hemisphere apparently) because it was a gorgeous day and we got some lovely photos. It was good to get an idea of the geography of the city from high up. We moved in to our flat and have settled in well. Yesterday we took a bus tour of the city, and we've worked out where some of the good pubs are! I've added photos to some of the other diary entries (Tahiti and the last NZ entry) so be sure to go back and look. from Jo x (and Graeme) ... read more

We’ve been in New Zealand for a week now and there’s lots to tell… I’m not sure where to start… First impressions of NZ are good. Auckland is a nice city, very culturally diverse (it has the biggest Polynesian population outside the islands, and lots of people from SE Asia live here too) and very friendly. Even the people at passport control in the airport are friendly! After our introduction to Auckland nightlife on the day we arrived we had a low-key weekend, apart from finding a flat that is. We ended up flat-hunting by accident on Sunday (it’s a long story!) and found one we really like - very central, one bedroom, comes with Sky TV included, and is on the 9th floor with views of the city and the ocean. Oh, and did I ... read more

We got here at lunch time yesterday and were met at the airport by Graeme's cousin Kenny. We went out for lunch, then Kenny took us to our hostel. We spent the afternoon getting our bearings, buying a sim card for the mobile, then Graeme decided to ring some of his Kiwi friends. Just by luck, Scotty happened to be in the area, so we met him and his girlfriend Crystal for a beer and the boys were able to catch up. In the evening, we went out for dinner (lovely Thai) with Kenny and his boyfriend Luke, and Lindsay and David, (Lindsay is another cousin of Kenny's) who are here from the UK, and are working in Auckland. A good night was had by all! We ended it in a weird Japanese Karaoke bar - ... read more

Every time I got these photos out I would get homesick! They were taken on my last hunt with Burnz down near Whangarei on a private block. As Burnz would agree we had plenty of opportunities but failed to deliver the real goods. Can't wait to crack back into this.... read more

Well I have spent 2weeks exploring the north island and have had an excellent time - in some ways I don't want to leave here - met loads of cool people, been to loads of exciting places and have taken part in great activities, been ferried around by a fab driver, Royal and generally had a good time. In the south Island I have got cold weather, sand flies and a 3hr ferry ride amongst other things to look forward to. Anyway it has to be done - sure I will have a good time in the South aswell, I can wrap up warm, wear insect repellant and take take a few sea-legs pills and hope for the best on the ferry-ride..... I have heard quite bad reports about the Wellington to Picton ferry. Between the ... read more

Well after a night of drinking, dancing and all the other usual night out mischief we decided the best way to clear the old cobwebs is to get right out there in the windiest place in N.Z. put on a pair of of oversized plastic boots which have four wheels attached to them and investigate what this city has to offer during daylight hours (of which there are few - remember it is winter here). Yep you guessed it we went roller-blading. I have found out the most fun way to enjoy roller-blading if you are an experienced skater is to take with you not just one person that has never skated before instead put a few not so confident folk on wheels first thing in the morning after a heavy night of beer cocktails and ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Taupo July 18th 2004

Well sorry for the delay folks, I spent the rainy days in Taupo catching up on the online diary thing then I have been really busy either touring or doing activities. Not much to report from Taupo - it was just a rainy wet town and for a wee while I was worried I might be stranded there!  I did go to the cinema and watch Shrek 2 - it was cool and Over the next few days the little group I have been mucking around with from the Kiwi bus have been repeating some of the lines and taking the mick out of people of the bus who are now nicknamed donkey!!  (they won't shut up!!)  I have also been called donkey at times esp. when I have been drinking the old 'Mountain Dew' a soft ... read more
