First off, Happy Thanksgiving to all our family and friends back home. This trip has made us extremely thankful for all that we have and all that we are doing. But most of all, we are thankful for our family and friends...we do miss you all! We awoke with a full agenda on our plate...explore Wellington. We only have 1 day to do it in, so let's do it up! First on the list was to get to the Beehive. That means driving in downtown traffic...okay...we can do this... And, we did! We found parking and was able to jump on a tour in progress. I happen to find touring buildings while listening to educational commentary fascinating! Jeff...well, he was humoring me, letting me play tourist...good husband! Seeing the architecture, listening to how New Zealand's constitutional ... read more

Yes, the time is flying by and it's an age since I posted a blog. So, here goes with a quick catch up on the very little that I have been doing. On returning from Europe I followed my procedure of the last couple of years and crashed with the flu. The weather didn't help and I found it hard to keep warm. We have had a couple of trips to Amy and Jeremy's in the Hawkes Bay to spend time with the kids and celebrate my birthday and Ella's 5th birthday. So now she is the big school girl, starting last week, and she seems to have taken it in her stride. She certainly looks grown up in her school uniform. Although my motivation to do anything has been low I have been walking heaps ... read more

"Kia Ora" - Hello in Mauri!! Its been a few days since we started our trip so thought it was time to give you all an update while we can! So by time flight arrived into Auckland on first day we didn't get to hostel until 1.30 am! We were straight up the next morning to do a drive 2.5 hours to Waitomo to see the Waitomo Caves and Glow worms. We thought we were going into the water in a boat, turns out we got wet suits and straight into a tube that keeps us afloat! In a dark cave with little light and a strong tide it was intimidating but so good to see the glow worms in the ceiling! Derek did jumping down a waterfall backwards but I chickened out... "I was very ... read more

Getting to the stage where we want to leave tomorrow, not in 7 days time. Lyn's still at work this week but I'm at home attempting to ensure we've done all the little things we need to. Packing - leaving out clothes, putting them back in, umming and aahing...all part of the excitement of the impending journey. We've belatedly realised that the temperatures in Germany will be a little cooler than we had imagined. Average temperatures for September appear to be around 13 to 14 degrees up to a maximum of about 19 or 20. That has meant a rethink of what clothes to take especially as Hong Kong and Tokyo will be up to 10 degrees warmer. Roll on 13 September!... read more

Six weeks until we head off for a short, 4 week trip to Hong Kong, Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium and Japan on the way home - partly for work, partly for leisure. In the throes of organising last minute accommodation and travel and checking out the places we want to visit. We're staying in Mannheim, Cologne, Hamburg and Berlin. Hoping to do a side trip to Prague from Berlin for a few nights. Also aiming to spend a couple of nights in Amsterdam if we can fit it in amongst the work schedule. Osaka and Tokyo in Japan. The lead up to a trip is always exciting. Doing all the preparation just makes it more real and anticipatory. Can't wait!... read more

I first learned that Wellington is the capital of New Zealand on a list of the best capital cities in the world. I got there in the late afternoon and I only had to be there for an hour before, at least in respect to the scenery, I was sold. I stayed at the YHA (Better for families and groups, who take over the place, than for independent travellers) and saw that there was a park right nearby named Alexandria. I walked up steep streets and then a steep trail to get somewhere I could run. Eventually a labyrinth of trails leads to the top of Mt. Victoria (which is as much of an exaggeration as Mt. Washington in Pittsburgh). The dirt trails are especially for mountain bikes but they were terrific to run. They're covered ... read more

Well. Today is the day we head off to Norway and guess what? There are delays on the flights but they tell us that we will make our connections. One thing about flying is that you find that you can't control things, so you just have to sit and wait. So at the moment I am enjoying a red wine sitting at Wellington Airport. Over the last few weeks we have just been arranging every thing at home in preperation for being away for 3 months. Up and down to Hastings to spend time with the kids, gardening, odd jobs and just waiting to get away from the cold. Celebrated Jeremy's 40th in Hastings with a great party and, as always enjoyed the kids. Have done a lot of walking and enjoyed a climb up Battle ... read more

We've been off the grid for a few days enjoying our time with Pukekohe friends. Walked around Omana Regional Park on Saturday, nice leisurely walk on a misty rainy day. Visibility out to the Hauraki Gulf islands was poor unfortunately but this is another nice Auckland Regional Park. Pixie the goat was a bit of a character, I am sure she looked like she would like a bite of me. Sunday saw us all head to Clevedon markets. The weather stayed clear for us and allowed us to wander around stocking up on fresh produce and other treats. We sat and enjoyed a coffee on hale bales whilst listening to a Jazz singer. Could have stayed there all day, was very relaxing. Enjoyed another evening with great company:) Monday we are off to explore another regional ... read more

Tomorrow we’re off to find summer in the northern hemisphere. In the space of four weeks we will visit five countries and catch seven flights. In between the mad travel we’ll be spending time with people that we don’t often get to see and wish we could see more of. We hope to see heaps, eat heaps and enjoy ourselves thoroughly.... read more
