Long time, no see. Since my Christmas Blog we have been doing the "normal life" thing of bits and pieces around the house, seeing the kids in Hawkes Bay and enjoying the summer. We are now into Autumn and it is certainly getting cooler in the evenings and mornings. Mid February, Di had her 2nd knee replaced. This has turned out to be a quicker recovery time than her 1st one , done 6 months ago and she is getting around well and improving every day. Now in early April she is walking really well. Planning for the Northern Hemisphere trip this year has been pretty much finalised. We head away from New Zealand on the 2nd of July and return to NZ on the 4th of October. So our plan is to spend our first ... read more

To the surprise of nobody, closing a bar with some Scotsmen gave me a bit of a hangover. Not a horrible one, but one of those where you just don’t feel quite right all day. I had managed to forget about the blister on my foot last night, but I was abruptly reminded when I jumped down from the top bunk in the morning. Our journey today would take us to Wellington, New Zealand’s capital and a renowned “party city”. It was no coincidence we were staying here on a Friday. On the way we had a quick stop in Bulls. Not sure why they’d call the place that. A more apt name would be “Sheep” but that probably would have been a cliché. Also en route was the town of Taihape, which hosts an annual ... read more

The C.O. Is not happy with the fitness level of the squad so she has ordered a walking tour of Wellington. After an early breakfast we mustered at the Tourist Information Centre at 9.45 and met our tour guide (Tina). We set of on the tour mainly marching in single file. Tina was knowledgable and thorough and we saw many impressive buildings and places that we would not have realised the significance. Tina's special interest was sculpture and pointed out and explained many examples on our route. Not sure the C.O. was totally impressed. There were constant reminders that Wellington was in the middle of an active earthquake zone. As Wellington is the capital of N.Z., many of the impressive buildings were owned by the government. The politicians have decreed a new, enhanced specification for earthquake ... read more

Wellington is known as the Windy City because situated where it is at the bottom of North Island right next to the Tasmen Strait separating North and South Islands it is exposed to the weather funnelling through the two land masses. It is the Capital city of New Zealand but only since 1865 and it was selected instead of Aukland as it was feared that the S. Island would claim independence so Wellington was selected to be a more central seat of government. The city has a population of191,000 which expands to 416,000 if you include the other towns in the Wellington region. This compares to the 1,657,000 souls in Aukland which makes Wellington the second largest city. If you consider, the land mass is roughly the same as the U.K. you can appreciate how sparsely ... read more

I am sitting in Wellington airport lounge trying to catch up on my blog. I apologise if I am not up to date but it is very difficult to keep up with events as catering for the C. O.'s every need can be time consuming. The pods are packed and loaded into the beast. We said our fond farewells to Brian and Lynda Tasker and thanked them profusely for putting up with us and their terrific hospitality and hoped that we have an opportunity to reciprocate should they travel to the U. K. again. The beast purred along highway 2 eating up the kilometres. The C.O. was relieved of speed controller duty as she delegated this to the satnav. We stopped for a coffee in Phaiatua which was rather scruffy and hosted some rather scruffy people. ... read more

A great Christmas and New Year spent in Taupo at Annemarie and Corrado's place. Also there was Jon, Carina and their 2 wee ones, Sadie and Miles, along with their au pair, Stevie. On Christmas day we had a house full with Leanne and Jasper, Jaspers parents and sister, and Paul, Hana and Katie who came down for the day from Cambridge. A typical Christmas day with plenty of sitting around nattering, plenty of food and of course a few drinks. New Year eve we went up to Paul and Hanna's for a wonderful evening then back to Taupo were we watched the midnight fire works. We caught up with Amy, Jeremy, Holly and Ella, along with Warwick on Boxing day before they all headed back to Hawkes Bay. So a good festive time. While in ... read more

Yes, I know, this next episode has come along very quickly, but as this was to be our last stop on the North Island, I thought it was a covenient point to finish a post, before we move on to South Island. Now, when we talk about 'Wellington', a number of different things come to mind. The Duke of Wellington, of course..........Napoleon's conqueror at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815; Beef Wellington, that classic cut of beef wrapped in pastry (or an upmarket Cornish Pasty to some), or even Paddington's iconic red Wellies, all the way from Peru! But today we are on our way to another famous Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand and the southern tip of the North Island. The journey is about 220 miles and we knew that, for the most ... read more

After a loooooong drive in the pissing rain we arrived in windy Wellington to the smiling faces of Joel and Polly (uni mates) who have been living there for about 18 months. It was HEAVEN. We had hot showers and shaves. There was actual television and electricity, not to mention they cooked us up a Spag Bol with garlic bread. Well worth the drive. That next day we made a plan to head to the Te Papa museum. It was pretty awesome. We saw a WW1 war exhibition “hero’s of our war” which told the story of New Zealand troops fighting the Turks with massive wax work figures (made by the people who did lord of the rings) and it was free! As with most museums Jack read every detail of the information while Char ogled ... read more
