Writing about the lovingly restored Number 12 Tram that is located next to the i-Site in Wanganui should be easy. But it isn't. I have seen it running on Saturday mornings through the markets. I have the photos to prove it. But trying to find information to attach to this blog proved difficult. I had a page from a pamphlet from the i-Site which provided me with a website, but it doesn't exist any more. Google gave me a few options such as the fact the Tramways Museum is open on a Sunday afternoon. I gave up and searhed for their FB page which they actually have. This will give you the best idea of what to expect and when you can expect to see it! https://www.facebook.com/wanganuitramways/ If you happen to be in Wanganui at a ... read more

Moutoa Gardens are right near the CBD, just across the road from the river. They are a must-see if you are interested in local history and land wars. The occupation of the Gardens in 1995 helped make them well-known due in part to controversial actions that were taken there such as the destruction of the statue of John Ballance. It was difficult for many to look beyond these actions to the reasons behind the occupation. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moutoa_Gardens https://nzhistory.govt.nz/media/photo/moutoa-gardens-protest I have added links to websites that will provide you with all the details you need. We all know I don't believe in boring you to tears with information you aren't interested in. Hopefully my photos will give you an idea of what you can expect to see. If you are travelling through Whanganui and the kids n... read more

I was out and about today, taking photos to help promote a local organisation, and found this gallery along the way. I quickly found myself completely side-tracked. There are 8 artists who are part of this gallery and the best part of your visit will be meeting at least one of them. I was very fortunate to meet the artist who had created the gorgeous mosaics I loved. He was kind enough to talk me through what his works involve and the inspiration behind them. The personal touch makes such a difference when you are as completely without artistic ability as I am! For me to promote a business they have to be great. I love the range of works this gallery has eg there is a very tall bright pink giraffe that is now on ... read more

Note from the editor. There has been some feedback from the younger (and some older) readers that there are too many difficult words in the text. Is this a story for children or adults they ask? Well, it is meant for both, for all children and all adults who have left part of their children's brain alive, which is most adults, although many don't want to know it. The reader must realise that this story is told through the eyes of a donkey. Their brains are of similar seize as a four year old but Donkey’s are known to take a fancy to more complex words which they pick up here and there while they grow up. They like to use them, even if they don’t always know their meaning. If you are a child (or ... read more

... read more

Wanganui. Wednesday 27 April 2011 Not particularly much to do here today. Bit rainy but lots of Glass Art studios and art galleries to stroll around. Gonna have to get this Warranty of Fitness (WOF) situation for my van sorted before I get pulled over and arrested. Searched for mechanics that could get the WOF over and done with asap so I can get a more on up to Taranaki and New Plymouth. ... read more

Hi All, Donavin reporting in after a fantastic canoe trip along the Whanganui River over the Christmas/New Year’s holiday break. Question: When is a Great Walk not a walk? Answer:-. When it is a canoe trip down the Whanganui River. Don't ask me why, but the Whanganui River Journey is designated as one of the nine Great Walks of New Zealand. For the last three years, since Marcos made the suggestion, I’ve been fixed with the idea of canoeing slowly down one of New Zealands most beautiful and pristine rivers – that idea became reality this year. To travel down the Whanganui is also to experience in part the history of New Zealand; the river was an important travel route for hundreds of years for the Maori who lived along its shores and, in the early ... read more
