Stayed at Extreme Backpackers (the nearest to the volcanoes) and set off at 7.00am for the 40min drive to the foot of the crossing. En route, formed a group with other people from our hostel (namely Campbell, Bridget, Iris, Spen and Debs) - it was mainly heavy, drenching rain and cold spots for most of the walk!. With stops for photos and 30min lunch took us around 6 hours. The weather was not on our side, as although the winds were not too bad, the clouds and rain inhibited the view, although the Emerald Lakes were still a sight to behold, after our struggle to the top! ... read more

English An early (to be on holidays) waking up (6.50), due to the long walk that awaits me and also due to the fact that after the hike I have to drive to Wellington (5 hours...), is the beginning of a special day. The walk start from a place from which you can see all the mountains that is just there waiting for you to hike.... The landscape is really desertic like with just small plants (the dark colour of the lava causes additional heating of the soil that usual plants don't rellay enjoy!). After 1 hour walking on nice FLAT path, there is a steep climb up to the South Crater, which looks really like a lunar landscape once you are there! The walk continues heading up to the Red crater, a Vulcano still ... read more

From Taupo we headed on to the wonderfully named Whakapapa (note that locals tend to say "F" instead of the "Wh"....so childish I know!) Anyhoo...on the way we stopped to check out the Craters of the Moon...did the compulsory walk around the track and "ooh'd and aah'd" as appropriate. In fact I think most of us just wanted to get back on the bus and snooze (typical backpackers!). Then we stopped at a waterfall where our crazy driver and some of the lads decided it would be a great idea to jump off into the freezing water below....ice melt off the mountains above! Silly! In the meantime the rest of us watched on (although Paul did decided to do a commando style roll down a very very steep slope almost giving me heart failure..."who put that ... read more

The two hobbits had a rather fruitless attempt on reaching Mount Doom this time. Sauron sent all the bad weather he could provoke, the clouds, the rain, and the wind had us turn back at the famous Tongariro Crossing. We felt a little bit 'doomed' and we were happy to get back to dry area afterwards...... read more

Tongariro Crossing Peter Jackson was insistent that LOTR be filmed in his homeland, and having completed this 17k one day hike, it's easy to see why. Billed as the finest one day walk in New Zealand, the track winds through a varied volcanic, alpine and bush terrain, representing not only middle-earth but a healthy dose of upper and lower. A fact to which our thighs still attest! For the first time on our NZ travels however, the weather was not favourable. The wind howled and the clouds kept rolling in making the climb up the shingle paths somewhat tricky. It also meant that a possible side trip to the top of Mt. Ngauruhoe (better known as 'Mount Doom' to the hoardes of LOTR pilgrims that make the trail) was not advisable. Even in good weather, it ... read more

We did the Tongariro Crossing today. It is a 17km hike that takes you across several craters and by the side of a volcano. The superfit people can hike up this as an aside to the main track! The hike, although hard going in places, was excellent. There were really good views and the scenery was amazing. A lot of this area was used in Lord of the Rings and we saw "Mt Doom". The hike involved two really steep climbs. They were far more of a climb than I was expecting but we both made it after lots of scrambling! The weather was so changeable in the mountains. I had never seen anything like it. When we got to the south crater it was clear blue skies. Within a couple of minutes the whole crater ... read more

I left Wellington via the train at 7:30 a.m. in early January. It is a twelve hour ride all the way to Auckland, with a 45 minute stop halfway along in the National Park. The staff from the Wellington train hop off, and switch to the southbound train which meets us at the halfway stop, and we get the staff from the other train. The Overlander web page has a bit more info and a link to another gallery of pictures as well. I was fortunate to have an interesting seat mate on the train, and we chatted along the route. While I had been careful to pack a novel to read to while away the hours, I got barely a chapter read, because if I wasn't engaged in conversation with Chris, I was glued to ... read more

Having consulted our maps and guides hard we decided to skip most of the South, East, West and North of North Island. Fortunately that leaves us a little bit in the middle. First stop was Tongariro where we walked the "Tongariro Crossing" ( Billed as the best one day walk in New Zealand ). Basically it takes you about 17km past Mount Doom and Mordor with a fair bit of climbing. For full effect we decided to do it in a major hurricane. Sara now rates "Wind" as her greatest fear ( something I had suspected for some time ) just above "Heights", "Walking" and "Volcanoes". To be fair, it was a little scary walking along a couple of the ridges in 70kmph winds and Sara did only sit down and cry once. Otherwise it was ... read more

first of all check the GALLERY section for some wicked badass pictures from our adventures these past couple days. you might have to click on the SLIDESHOW button on the top right side of the nov 25th gallery entry. enjoy ill start from Matamata a bit and give a brief synopsis. From hobbiton we were off to Rotorua. This is basically a tourist paradise. We werent your average tourists though. We didnt have the money to go on the crazy jet boating or the thermal spas. Which by the way smells like ass. Its always nice to walk down the street and and get the smell of rotton eggs. We only stayed the night and were off to Taupo. Its a really nice city and we did spend two nights here. We usually spend more than ... read more
