Then three guys who looked like men in black walked across beach, then three bridesmaids and then the bride! It was so nice watching it, i nearly cried!! We flew out of Cairns on the 19th and it turned out to be quite a stressful experience. Our flight left at 5:45am and when we tried to check in at 4am we discovered New Zealand passports were not being accepted by the Qantas systems. After an hour of standing there and phone calls to Immigration and everywhere else we got our boarding pass for our flight to Sydney. That meant we had an hour to get our boarding pass for our flight from Sydney to Auckland, get from the domestic to the international terminal and get through security again! We managed to do it with our names being called over the intercom as we were about to board the plane! Once on the planes though we had no problems and we arrived in Auckland ahead ... read more

Christmas with the Fairhursts Having changed our plans to go to Fiji we jumped at the chance to spend Christmas with friends living in Tauranga in the bay of plenty. Mark, Julie, Charlotte and Olivia (and not to forget Milly the dog) were the perfect hosts, even giving up their bedroom for us as their current extension project was not finished in time. Tauranga is a lovely seaside location with Mt Manganui giving fine views of the surrounding countryside. We spent the few days before Christmas shopping and resting with a quick trip up the Coromandel penisula to visit the hot water beach for a spot of warm water (make that bloody hot water) bathing. It was nice to have a Christmas with kids around as it always seems to add to the excitement. Christmas eve ... read more

The day starts with a wholesome bowl of Jim's homemade muesli - fuel for the morning of digging, grubbing, picking, weeding, raking and pruning we have ahead of us. We're usually ready by eight, although one advantage of WWOOFing in this particular household is that timekeeping isn't excessively draconian, which is lovely when you're as allergic to alarm-clocks as I am. Jim and Julie spend much of their morning - at least at this time of year, in early summer - picking green beans in the hothouse. It's not as easy a job as it sounds, requiring a knack for judging whether each bean is ready to be picked, still too small or past its best. As mentioned previously the beans are the business' principal "cash crop" and as such is far too precious to be ... read more

Slept very well and woke up feeling very rested and refreshed. It took us a while to pack up as we have been here for a few days now and more and more things have been brought in from the car. A few people along the way have recommended Mt Manganui for a visit - it's a small costal town on the Western Bay of Plenty, which is supposed to be NZ's best surf city complete with an artificial reef for bigger waves. With the interest in surfing this looks to be a good place for a day. Drive was only a few hours to get to the 'Mount' and we got there just before lunch time. Both quite glad to get out of the sulphur smell of Rotorua a real pongy town! Mt Manganui is ... read more

Anyway, have had a mad week and have done loads although have managed to pick up a lovely stomach bug like the one I had in Thailand which has made me feel rubbish for most of the week but I have got on with things as did'nt want to miss out as only a few dys left here. Well on Monday we decided to drive back to Rotorua, this is where we first started out and we liked it here. There was still alot we had'nt done there and ... read more

They say that New Zealand has 4 million people and 40 million sheep and almost as many cows. If anything we’d guess those figures are low, there are sheep everywhere. On one occasion we lamented about driving past a very picturesque green field, with many sheep grazing without stopping for a photo. An hour later we were held up in a kiwi traffic jam….a heard of 400 sheep, which were being shepherded from one pasture to the next down the main highway! As we roll around the country we are greeted by a landscape that presents itself after every curve in the road just as a postcard, even better than a postcard, more like a two page spread in a coffee table book. Rolling hills that seem three shades greener than the colour green naturally occurs. ... read more
