Day 135: Wednesday 12th November - Meeting an old friend Arrive at Auckland airport at 4.30am. Standing in the queue waiting to go through immigration it hits me that this is the 6th of the 7th continents I have been to....only Antarctica to go! The immigration officer really doesn't want to let me in. First he wants evidence of onward travel, then to know how I bought me Round the World ticket when I present that, then what my credit card limit is, then what countries I visited in South America and what I was up to whilst there, then what my plans are whilst in New Zealand. Finally he decides to let me through, its not even as if I was vague on how much time I was going to be in the country, stating ... read more

Bill is now out of hospital and hole in his ankle is slowly healing with help of daily visits from district nurse to change dressings. Took Bill out for first beer in a week to Steamship Brewing Co bar/restaurant down by harbour, great place with log fire, comfy seats and table lamp chandeliers. Finished off in evening at Lenin bar, had shot of Absolute Los Angeles vidka, pomegranite flavour!! Went back next evening for meal, best steak and cheddar pies ever tasted. Next day hired a car and went to Waitakere Range (Forest). A visit to the visitor centre with great look outs over the forest ans Piha Beach. Big Maori carving, a bit touristy but still good. Then drove down to Piha Beach, black sand and surfing Sue went to a walk on the beach ... read more

Continued... (We're in a gaming internet cafe at the moment as it was the only one we could find, and there are people shouting to kill this person and that...its actually quite distracting!) Anyway... After the buzz of Queenstown, we had a relaxing day in Te Anau walking around the lake and just lazing about and then drove onto Manapouri to get on our boat for an overnight tour of the Doubtful Sounds. The tour was amazing. It was a little rainy, especially when we went kayaking, but was beautifiul and so untouched. When it got to night time it was completely dark outside. The clouds covered the moon and any stars, and there was no one for miles around...so it was literally pitch black. Thinking about it I don't think i've ever been somewhere where ... read more

Yes we are still in Auckland, it is now Tuesday evening and Bill is still in hospital, and having ultrasound on ankle tomorrow morning to see if infection has turned into an absyss, if so good news as surgeon will remove it and he should be able to leave hospital Thursday??? Bill is in a ward with 3 others, all very old and 1 with dementia, yes there are others alot worse off. I took ferry over to Devonport Island this afternoon, weather here has been very warm and sunny for last few days, the Island was like an old seaside town in England, very quiet and peaceful and pretty, went for walk along beach and up to top of North point then back down to wander around small quaint shops, they had an old ... read more

Left the sunshine of Fiji on Thursday, very impressive airport at Nadi, many large duty free shops, a shame we couldn't buy anything(no room in bags). After approx 3 hour flight to Auckland we arrived to rain and much cooler temperature than we were used to. Quickly out of airport after declaring our small purchases of a shell necklace and wooden carved dolphin. Took taxi to City centre to find hostel, dumped our backpacks in our room and went out to find a bar to celebrate next leg of our trip, Tui is the local brew and is served by asking for a handle!! Up early next morning to explore Auckland, took free bus tour of city, not very exciting, went to National Maritime Museum, and decided to go up Sky Tower had great view ... read more
