The sun shines brightly on our balcony this morning, now this is the French Polynesian weather that we know and love. Alan and I eat breakfast while catching a last glimpse of Moorea. A brown ribbon of river water colors the lagoon, the only evidence of yesterday’s heavy rains. Today, Mariner sails from Moorea to Papeete, a short two-hour ride. We’ve been invited to a special party for frequent Regent customers. So, as the ship sails from here to there, Alan and I sit near the rail on the back deck of Horizon Lounge. The caviar and champagne flow while we watch Moorea slowly fade away. Our arrival in Papeete is hot and steamy. Since we’ve toured here before, a day lounging on the balcony in the warm sun sounds perfect to us. Besides, we have ... read more

When American author, Thomas Wolfe, wrote his book, You Can’t Go Home Again, I doubt that he meant a cruise excursion in Moorea. Alan and I may not be “going home again,” but, today, we’re repeating one of our favorite experiences, the Lagoon Discovery with Snorkeling excursion. Will it be as special this time? Storm clouds hang outside Moorea’s reef as we take the tender for an 8:00 am rendezvous with our tour boat. Because of the threatening weather, we leave our cameras behind, which we later regret. On the excursion boat, two guides introduce themselves. I’ll call them handsome guide and young handsome guide. While the boat motors out of Cook’s Bay and into the lagoon, handsome guide advises our group on proper behavior when swimming with stingrays. Handsome guide speaks with a French accent. ... read more

When you’re visiting an island famous for its beautiful lagoon, it would be a crime not to get in the water. And, since Alan and I have hauled our snorkeling gear through airports, around New Zealand and across the Pacific Ocean, we’re determined to use it. So, even though clouds threaten rain, we take the tender to shore and the beginning of our “Stingray Ballet and Snorkel Safari.” We board a covered boat that has two rows of long benches facing each other. Placing our gear underneath the seat, Alan and I wait for fellow cruisers to select from a large bin of fins and masks. Most passengers choose to use the equipment provided by the tour and there is much grumbling and griping about its condition. “Don’t you have any extra-large fins?” one man asks. ... read more

We arrived at the Marquesas Islands after 2 days at sea. Normal sea days spent eating, crafting, reading and going to various lectures. We were disappointed on arrival to sea another cruise liner, the Paul Gauguin (appropriately enough) had arrived before us as we knew there would be limited taxi/car/boat hire possibilities and no tours on offer and this proved to be the case. On disembarking by tender we arrived to discover no transport available of any sort; at least in the morning. So we immediately reserved a vehicle for the afternoon, but being a captive audience, we had to take a driver, but she turned out trumps - the daughter of the owner. We had teamed up with our table mates Pam and Stewart for the day. So, we spent the morning reviewing Taioha'e, the ... read more

So here we are on a tropical island. Tropical in the sense of never-ending torrential rain that is. Apparently rainy season started the day we arrived. Being outside is like having a shower with lots of other people (avec clothing naturelement!). We spent the first day wandering around the waterfront area of Papeete (in the rain - did I mention the rain?). We stopped for a spot of lunch and Bill accidentally spent $20 on some apple juice. Nice juice, but a little overpriced we thought. My schoolgirl French is not getting us far but I did manage to say Je voudrais un croque monsieur which made Billy happy. Yesterday we spent the day on Moorea. It rained all morning (am I repeating myself?) but was fiercely hot in the afternoon and I melted. We trespassed ... read more

Managed to get ashore at this stop. We were tendered in to Viatape Wharf (Viatape is the main town on this 12 square mile (30.55 sq km island). However, all trips were cancelled as it was tipping it down and continued to do so all day, at least until we were back on the ship when there was a brief respite for about half an hour but then it kicked off again. We were supposed to be going on a 4-wheel drive tour - but ended up swimming to the local shops where we purchased some Christmas presents and a bottle of hot sauce from the general store. A great pity really because as can be seen, this is a truly beautiful island with a textbook geography of a central volcanic island surrounded by a fringing ... read more

Having missed out on Nuie and Rarotonga where the sea was too high to get people onto tenders - although landing would have been possible - we arrived at Tahiti a day and a half early, on Sunday morning rather than Monday evening. However, we also had the promise of an extra stop at Bora-Bora, all being well. We were able to disembark very early - at about 8 am - and this being French, we had no problems with the cash machines. In fact, we had decided on the basis of both advice and documentation to spend the day on Mo'orea, a neighouring island where we wanted to hike. Mo'orea was formed as a volcano 1.5 to 2.5 million years ago, the result of a Society hot spot in the mantle under the oceanic plate ... read more

Ok, never did I ever actually think I would be in Tahiti!!! Nope… never…. But let me tell you, those 26 hours that I was there was much needed, and very much amazing. My on the beach bungalow had an enormous bed, with a walk in closet. I front door view of the ocean. I patio with two launge chairs. And the bathroom was probably my favorite part. Imagine an entire bathroom with doors that lead to the shower, so basically I got to shower outside!!! Awesome!! My entire bungalow screamed romantic getaway. And the ocean water was completely transparent no matter how deep I went. I did a lot of snorkeling, but I was very disappointed I didn’t see any sharks, because there was black tips swimming around the island , and a lot of ... read more

English translation: a little further down as usual...

Kristina & Zach are off to Paris for a couple of days after spending 3 days here in London with me. Paris hotels, as most European hotels, are notorious for their small rooms but, probably not in comparison with my flat's bedroom that they had to stay in prior to boarding a Eurostar train to Paris this morning. Why else would Kristina think that their hotel room is quite good? :) Reading her travel blog inspired me to start my own as no matter how great travel experiences are, they are even better when shared with friends, even if not in real time. (Plus, I can stop clogging your email boxes with 500k + pictures). As most of you know, my most recent vacation (or I should say "holiday") was in the beautiful French Polynesia, which ... read more
