It’s true what they say about Papeete, Tahiti; it is not the tropical paradise one imagines. This large city (by Polynesian standards) has about 20,000 inhabitants and plenty of city sounds and traffic. Sitting on the balcony, drinking our morning coffee as the ship pulls into port after another day at sea, we notice the car-jammed streets. But, it is an exotic place to us and we can’t wait to get out in the very hot and humid weather to explore. After walking down the gangplank and across the dock to a walkway that skirts the water, Alan and I are quickly soaked in sweat. We pass by another cruise ship and continue for a while along the pathway. Changing sides of the street, we walk back towards the ship looking in shops along the way. ... read more

We landed in Papeete on the island of Tahiti very late at night and were already sceptical about our arranged pick-up. Needless to say they did'nt turn up and we caught an (expensive) cab to our hostel. Upon arrival there was nobody there and no lights on but we managed to wake someone up and get our room; they knew we were coming and claimed the transfer was waiting for us.... yeah, right! After a hot night in our room we got up and had breakfast. This really is a beautiful place, crystal clear blue waters, just like you see on those 'paradise island' photos. We spent some time in the town and then 2 days soaking up the sun on the beach.... read more

This entry is really old news, the internet prices in Tahiti were so high that I couldn't afford to use the computer. Then, Easter Island was so fantastic, that I had to write about that first. Now, we are in the Cook Islands and I am writing about Tahiti. Are you confused yet?? Our parting act as we left LAX for Tahiti was the destruction of the cell phone. It gave Ron great pleasure to disconnect from that aspect of our U.S. life. I wanted to photograph it for the blog, but we didn't want to create a scene in the airport. So, he took it to the men's room and smashed it in to numerous pieces in a handicapped stall. No more, "Can you hear me now?" I wish I could have wittnessed its demise. ... read more

Dick says for me to warn you that it takes a long time for us to upload pictures to the Blog, so if you go to our latest entry and find no pics, try again later and see if some are there. They may not show up right away. We have rejoined our ship today in Papeete on the big island of Tahiti, after spending the last two days on Bora Bora. I know we've said this before, but Bora Bora and its sister islands must surely be the most beautiful place on earth. Each one a green tropical paradise surrounded by green, turquoise and deep blue waters. The Bora Bora Nui Resort that we went to was just unbelievable. Dick and I both agreed we had never seen anything to rival it in beauty and ... read more

We docked this morning (Wednesday) at Raiatea, the first of the French Polyneasian islands we'll visit. Tomorrow is a stop at Bora Bora (think "South Pacific") where we will stay overnight at one of their famous resorts with thatch roofed huts over the water where the room service breakfast arrives on a canoe. This is something we heard about last year when we were here, and we wanted to try it out this time. These little islands are fabulously beautiful, each one surrounded by coral reefs so ugly things like tsunamis can't get through. The French own these islands, and they treat the native Polynesian a bit like the US used to treat its native Americans, except the handcuffs are more golden. A lot of free stuff and heavily subsidised housing. Unlike most tropical islands, tourism is ... read more

It well become more dificult to write these Blogs when we have sea days. We have lots to do but few new pictures. This is our second sea day out of four before we get to Tahiti. There are 44 ports in 101 days. Some of the ports we stay in more than one day. We are signed up for six overland tours which last from one to four days (leave ship in one port and rejoin ship in some cases three to four days latter in another port. The whole Trip can be seen at www.crystalcruses.com. Dick... read more

I've got it all wrong... I was pretty cocky in planning this trip.. the timing of things, the exotic locations I had selected..they were all perfect... but I have got it wrong. In allowing a year to explore the world, and 2 weeks for the South Pacific, I have got things the wrong way round... a year here would be just fine... this place is simply the place that daydreams are made of. Tahiti.. the name conjours up images in your mind, I bet, of reef fringed lagoons of baby blue water, swaying palm trees, pretty polynesian girls wearing floral patterns and flowers in their hair etc etc... now I hate to disappoint you, so I wont... it's all true. Well, the outlying islands are, anyway.. Tahiti is the biggest island and hub of French Polynesia.. ... read more

We're in Tahiti now. We left Easter Island on Sunday evening and had a 6 hour journey to Papeete, where we were greeted at the airport by a band playing Polynesian music and women in traditional dress giving out flowers to wear behind our ears (and yes, Graeme did wear his for a while!). We stayed in a really nice hotel near the airport for the night, and the view in the morning was amazing - across the ocean to Moorea, a neighbouring island which rises spectacularly from the ocean. Photo will appear here soon! The next morning we took the ferry to Moorea and finally got to our accommodation after waiting for the bus for over an hour, they're very laid back in this part of the world and the bus won't stop at the ... read more

We arrived at Tahiti from Fiji, via the French airline UTA. Our hotel on the beach was a series of separate structures modeled to resemble huts. Each one had a conical roof. Sightseeing around the island included the Tomb of King Pomare V, Venus Point, where Captain Cook landed in 1769, and a Tahitian Marare. A Marareis a ceremonial or sacred space. The marae consisted of a rectangular yard of basalt rocks and coral slabs with an altar (ahu) of vertical stones inside. We made an interesting stop at a church where the artwork depicted Biblical figures as Polynesians. There was also time to walk around Papeete, a tropical town with a very French flavor. On a side trip we flew over to Bora Bora, about 162 miles (260 km) from Tahiti, on an RAI DC-4. ... read more
