In November I'm flying from LAX to Auckland and will have a 2-hour layover in Papeete. What is there to do in the airport? May I leave the airport, or am I supposed to stay inside? Is there a cafe, public telephones, newspapers, magazines, etc.? Is two hours long enough to go outside the airport if I want to? As far as I know, I won't have to check back in since I'll already have my boarding pass. I hear that there is market set up across the street from the terminal that sells Tahitian handicrafts, etc. Is that true? I'll be there between 6am and 8am. If anyone can let me know that would be great. I guess in the worst case scenario I'll just have to sit in the international transfer lounge and read ... read more

In our nine years of world cruising, Susan and I have been fortunate to meet some very interesting and notable world figures. Milton Friedman, Ted Koppel, Tommy Tune, Mark Russell, Debbie Reynolds, Jon Miller and Hugh Downs, just to mention a few. On our last two world cruises we’ve heard lectures by Terry Waite that both terrify and inspire. Terry had remarkable successes as a hostage negotiator in the 1980s until he himself was taken hostage in Beirut in 1987. Terry then faced four years of solitary confinement and torture at the hands of Islamic Jihad terrorists. Since his release in 1991 he has become a prolific lecturer, writer, and commentator around the globe, and for many a source of inspiration in times of despair. Terry is a very prominent figure on board the ship. ... read more

January 18th 2009 Having dutifully retrieved our baggage, George set about trying to find our host, who had promised to pick us up at the arranged time. Half an hour later, a random man who was standing next to me as I began to look more and more frustrated, asked me “Are you looking for someone?” Yes, I said, Taaroa Lodge. “Lucky you! You’ve found me!” Ok, buddy, where the heck is your sign? Apparently, he left it in the van. “It don’t matter! Welcome to the island, man!” he said. Half an hour of manic driving later, I stepped out of the van and almost stepped on two best friends… the laziest dog you’ve ever met, Rex, and the fattest, happiest, and definitely laziest bunny you’ll ever see. They hang around and do nothing together ... read more

man hoert ja so Einiges ueber Tahiti.

We were hoping our taxi would arrive a little early, but weren't quite expecting it to arrive 5 hours early at 4am. We politely asked if he would mind coming back a little later. Maybe about 9am, the time we had asked for. Clearly unimpressed at us putting him out, he came back at 9.30. Everything else went smoothly, apart from the woman at the airport who refused to check us in because we didn't have any documentation. We suggested that the whole point of having e-tickets meant we didn't have to have any documentation and she finally relented. After that, though, everything went smoothly. We quite enjoyed flying on Air Tahiti Nui; the staff were very friendly, the meals were good and the plane was only 2/3 full. We were greeted at the airport by ... read more

We got up bright and early at 6am to get ready for our flight back to Rarotonga. Beni came and collected us at 6.45am and I was surprised to see that the streets were just as busy at this time of the morning as they were at peak rush hour in the evening. Beni told us that school starts at 7.30am in Tahiti so the roads are busy from 6am. We weren’t too sad to say goodbye to Papeete, although next time we visit (and we will be back one day) it would be nice to stay on the mainland for an extra night so that we could do an island tour as it felt a shame that we only got to see the least beautiful part of it. We checked in our luggage, and then ... read more

I was up early which is pretty much always the case when its time to move on, Veia drove us to the airport at 8.30am where we were able to grab a toasted sandwich for breakfast. Later Ruth went to throw her wrapper in the bin, a moment later she came back raving about big spiders in the bin, I went over to look and it turned out to be a land crab, after seeing that one we began to see others scuttling around the place. We arrived back in Rarotonga about 10am, while I went and got a car from the hire place across the road Ruth collected our luggage. I went back to the prison on my way back to Muri but there were still no Ukekeles there that appealed to me and Ruth ... read more

We set off back into town first thing to change some travellers cheques at the bank. The bank was completely different to ours - there were just three desks inside and each had little cubicles around them and it was all very old fashioned. Everything had to be written down manually twice which took ages. We must have been in there for 40 mins by the time we finally got our money, and then the banker just opened his unlocked drawer and took out a wad of cash! Maybe in Tahiti people don’t rob banks as it didn‘t feel very secure! Matt looked for the boat with three masts again as we’d brought the camera with us this time but unfortunately it was already in the distance so he only got a photo of it leaving. ... read more
