Hi guys not sure if my new Zealand entry worked so hope I have better luck with this one. I have been in the cook islands for 6 days with only 3 to go. It has gone so fast.... The day I arrived was the day of the wedding and it was such perfect weather. Emma found me laying on the beach and I went and hung out with her while she was getting ready. I just tried to keep her pre wedding jitters under control while I drank lots of champange and relaxed in her private spa on the beach front- the things I do to help my friends ; ) The actual wedding ceremony was amazingly romantic and the perfect way to show your love for someone with the sunsetting behind them on an ... read more

In New Zealand we learned that the Cook Islands had been hit by 3 big cyclones in 10 days. Normally there's only one in every few years! We reckoned we were safe as there couldn't possibly be anymore, but to be on the safe side we made sure our accommodation wasn't on the beach! We left New Zealand on the 27th February and arrived in Rarotonga (the capital and the biggest island in the group) the day before (you have read it correctly, as we cross the international dateline we go back a day)! We were picked up at the airport with the thick, acrid smell of multitudenous bonfires burning as people disposed of broken branches and debris from the cyclones. Our host informed us that another cyclone was heading our way in about 3 days ... read more

We arrived at about 5:30am after a long flight from LA with a stop for 1.5 hours in Tahiti which we didn't know about until we got on the flight. After a very short wait for our bags (it helps when only one flight comes in at a time!), our chariot awaited and took us directly to the Aroko Bungalows. It was pretty basic but just what we needed - afterall it had a big bed, a shower, a fridge for the beers and a deck to sit out on with views over the lagoon. What more could you ask for? Well, some air conditioning perhaps but actually our ceiling fan did a pretty good job considering it stayed around 28 degrees even at night. We did very little to be honest despite all the things ... read more

Today is Tuesday February 1st because we have the crossed the international date line and gained a day. We had no January 31st. We were 6 hours behind the east coast but now are18 hours ahead (I think). We set our clocks back at each time zone until we get to London and then pick up the final 5 or 6 hours (depending on Daylight Saving Time) on the flight home. Dick (Dick says he has done the hard part and explained why we went from Sunday to Tuesday, so now I can finish up.) We’re having some relaxing days at sea before arriving tomorrow at Tonga, the last stop before New Zealand. We’ll spend the day there, leave at 11:00 pm, and dock in New Zealand the next morning. Yesterday after the morning lectures (a ... read more

The Adventure Begins Finally after flying from London via Los Angeles and Tahiti I land in the Cook Islands on Rarotonga. I had never been to the tropics before, therefore the temperature on leaving the plane was fantastic after the dull cold of the English winter.... that combined with a whole load of flowers being popped on my head as part of a welcome by my driver... was a fantastic start to my year on the hoof. I stayed down south at Muri beach, approximately 10m from my hut was the beach and blue lagoon heading a good 400m out to the reef and small islands all topped off by white sand and nothing happening apart from the wind cruising through the trees. The cook islands are famous for there triangular coins..... and maybe there black ... read more

Last day today. Since we last wrote, we’ve had a couple more dives and done some more walking. The first dive was at some caves, not overly exciting but we did see a huge octopus swimming around before backing into a hole to hide from us. The last one was back at the Mataora for another night dive. This one was badly organised though with some very inexperienced divers kicking up silt, dropping torches, swimming into people…not that I am saying we are experienced or anything, but we are better than that! Between those dives we took the bus round to Muri beach/lagoon. We had a look at a couple of historic boat launch sites. The first one, marked by a stone circle, was where boats were supposedly launched for the great migration to NZ, the ... read more

More diving of course. Friday we had a morning off and went for a long walk along the old inner ring road and back along the beach. The afternoons dive was back at Paradise Reef for a navigation dive. That went well, and we even had time after all the compass work and counting kicks to just swim round and look at the reef and fish. That was our last course dive, and we are now advanced open water divers. Saturday we had a day off from diving, but didn’t sit back and relax. We went into Avarua in the morning for a look around the big Saturday market. Plenty of fruit and veges, along with all the touristy stuff. We got some fruit and then stocked up on other food at the supermarket. We tried ... read more

We’ve done five dives now; one was called off because of rough seas. The first was a wreck called the Mataora, outside Avarua harbour. The wreck was broken up, and in places was little more than a pile of twisted metal. We didn’t see heaps of fish, but it was a good and interesting dive. The water was reasonably warm (24C) and visibility was good. We saw angel fish, damsel fish, some big lionfish, cod, crown of thorns, triggerfish, rainbow wrasse, threadfin butterfly fish, anemone fish, clownfish, checkerboard wrasse, blue spotted grouper and trumpet fish. The coral around the wreck was very plain, but appeared to be alive. We hung around town (Avarua), having lunch at Trader Jacks, waiting for the second dive, only to be told that it had been called off due to rough ... read more

London to Rarotonga in one go is a long flight. We stopped for a few hours in LA, what a hassle! We had to go through customs and passport control just to get to the transit lounge. Mind you, it wasn’t really a transit lounge, we did kind of enter the US and then leave again, we could have taken off into the night if we’d wanted to. Next stop was Papeete; we always seem to stop in Tahiti to change planes, never to visit. Finally we made it to Rarotonga, landing early Sunday morning. We were met in a van and were out at the hostel (Backpackers International Hostel, West Coast, reasonable discount for staying longer than a week, basic but friendly) by 8am. Even at that time it was hot and humid. We went ... read more
