As we boarded our Air New Zealand aeroplane in Los Angeles in preparation for our 10 hour flight to Rarotonga, it dawned on us just how much of an unknown quantity The Cook Islands are. Journeying through America was such a day-at-a-time quick-fire experience and distraction that to think ahead to the 'second leg' of the trip just didnt happen. So there we were, thrusting down the runway at LAX and then up and into the night sky to make our way to the collective dots of land that make up the Cook Islands, that are layed out in the middle of the vast South Pacific Ocean. On arriving at Rarotonga International Airport, we received an instant indication of just how extremely different life was going to be for us on these islands as opposed to ... read more

Today, as I was borded of the stressful task of sunbathing, I hired a mountain bike and cycled into town and back. The bike did wonders for the thighs but left me abit saddle sore! :S All this week there are celebrations taking place every night, people from the outer Cook Island all gather in Rarotonga and perform tradition Cook Islands dance, song and music. So, we headed down to the auditorium but they had sold out of tickets for tonights dance performance. Not ones to be downbeat, we took the opportunity to sample the wide range of tasty, traditional, treats that were on sale at stalls outside the auditorium! The following day, Bean and I were blissfully minding our own business, on the beach, when a flapping, brightly coloured fish slapped on to my lap! ... read more

On Sunday morning, Fee and I awoke early, pulled on our respectable “Sunday Best” outfits and marched ourselves to the CICC Church. Bean, still feeling a little groggy, decided to give it a miss. We couldn’t miss the Church as there was a sea of people arriving, and the bells were ringing loudly. We walked through the pretty graveyard and into the church which was made from coral and limestone and dated back to 1800. The locals were dressed very formally. The men, in suits and ties and the women in colourful dresses and brightly flowered straw hats. They looked stunning. The service began and was a mix of English Christian and traditional Cook/Maori with regular bursts of enthusiastic accapella singing from the congregation. Although Fee and I obviously didn’t understand a word, it was wonderful ... read more

Kia Orana! (Long may you live) We arrived in Raratonga on Friday 27th July at 17.30, which was a little confusing as we had departed from Fiji at 12.15pm on Saturday 28th July… Of course, this was explained by the fact that we had passed over the date line thus gaining an extra day! Woohoo! At the tiny airport we were greeted by a troupe of Polynesian singers, all brightly dressed in “hula” skirts and flower garlands. It was certainly an exciting welcome for us as we located a shuttle bus to take us to our hostel, which was about 15 mins down the coast. We were immediately struck with how beautiful the island was, quite unlike mainland Fiji which was sadly quite littered and dirty. Raratonga in contrast was clean and lined with attractive hut-like ... read more

July 27th, 2007 We arrived in Rarotonga at about 6:30am. It was still dark when we landed, but we were welcomed into the small airport with smiles and a song from the locals. We left most of our luggage in left luggage and waited for our 8:00am flight to Auitutaki. It was a short flight (about 45-50 minutes). We saw our first glimpse of paradise as we flew over the Island. The island is surrounded by a coral barrier and the lagoon goes from crystal clear in some places to a brilliant turquoise. We landed in Lamond/wirig style to a light shower (that was to pass over soon and the sky to become a bright blue again). The airport was a small building that housed a snack bar and a man singing. (pretty sure it ... read more

UntitledJacob Harris we flew to Rarotonga, the main island in the Cook Islands. About a 4 hour flight from Auckland. We landed at 1 am their time and were picked up from the airport. We booked ahead at a beach house called Vara's on the east side of the island, when we got there we waited while our driver searched for our room key...it was no where to be found..so after a good 45 minutes of searching and calling people and no key to be had..they drove us to another property where there was an open room..but when we got there, the key for that room didn't work despite several attempts by different people!!? The lady tried breaking in with a laminated map.. which didn't work..eventually i used some big knife from the kitchen to pry ... read more

.... AKA the holiday at the end of the holiday part 2. We arrived in Rarotonga late on friday afternoon, having left saturday lunchtime, and spent our bonus afternoon/evening enjoying a drink by the waterside in Avarua town and the first of what became too many Palace Burgers (Nic - if you never had these when you were here you need to go back!). Saturday morning was absolutely scorching hot and we headed back to town with a big list of things to do before the whole island pretty much closed for the rest of the weekend at lunchtime! As this was our last stop, we weren't going to worry about budgeting too much and just enjoy ourselves so in the space of a few hours we'd squeezed in: A trip to the craft market, which ... read more

We decided to make our way to Queenstown on the scenic Taieri Gorge Railway This train runs out of the beautiful Dunedin Railway Station to Middlemarch about 60km away. After boarding the train and a quick pie for lunch we stood out on one of the viewing platforms (As long as we could take the wind) to see some of the scenery. The railway line travels through spectacular scenery along the banks of the Taieri River, through numerous tunnels and climbs along the Taieri Gorge to the Strath Taieri. On its way, it crosses over a dozen viaducts, including the southern hemisphere's largest wrought iron structure, and passes through 10 tunnels. The journey was fantastic and flew by. We were collected by a bus at Pukerangi and from there we had a 4 hour bus journey ... read more
