****This blog was written on the 29th May, so some of the wording a bit overdue! Stay tuned for our next entry which shouldnt be too long!**** Yep, you heard right. After almost 3 and a half years of permanent residency in Margs, we have D-Day (that’s “departure day”to you and me) set for 6th June 2011. WOOHOOOOOOOO! As our blogs have become less & less frequent with the longer we’ve lived here, will do a quick recap of major events since our last blog…..which was…..hmmmmm, probably nearly a year ago, oops! Starting from our fab Christmas escape where we again took to the road to do the “proper” John Holland Track. You will remember from our last trip in May last year we headed off inland, but because of the rain rain rain, we didn’t ... read more

One of the great things about visiting Australia is that we’ve had friends in each major city that we’ve visited. It’s great because it gets you out doing things that the locals do rather than just the touristy stuff. In Perth, we started off with a nice walk in Kings Park, assisted at hockey practice (field hockey, that is), and went for dinner at a nice micro-brewery in Freemantle. We were also treated to a game of Aussie Rules football which was very entertaining, and were recruited for the HBF Run for a Reason where we walked 4.5km raising funds for various charities. It was a lot of fun and they had about 14,000 people turn out for the run. True local experience! Next we headed south to the Margaret River area. We had full intentions ... read more

It is the 4th May already and we have been on the road for just over 4 weeks. Every minute has been wonderful, except we do miss everyone, except Brent, as he just spent 4 days with us in Perth. Guess that makes him temporarily Son number One.... lol. With sad hearts w left Heather and Dougal today. We have enjoyed every minute of our time with them and in Perth area. We loved it. This evening we have booked into a caravan park at Prevelly just 5 minutes coastal from Margaret River. The trip down South was uneventful but beautiful. Wonderful country and very green. We passed many cattle and sheep properties before we reach the vineyards of the Margaret River Region. Heather advised us not to stay in Margaret River, but to go coastal ... read more

Friday 15th – and we were rather sad to be leaving Walpole. We loved the caravan park and the area and we know there is much more to see should we ever return. The journey today was almost 300kms and, for much of that, the road wound its way through tall karri trees. The more windy roads meant slower progress but there wasn’t too much other traffic around to worry about. Signs warned of large timber lorries but we hardly saw any. We stopped for a break in Pemberton, a pleasant small town in amongst the trees, where we had a very enjoyable train trip last time we were there. The town’s income revolves largely around timber with a huge saw-mill and tourist attractions, like the train trip, detailing the history of timber production over the ... read more

Margaret River to Fremantle & around Along our journey up the western coast from Margaret River, we stopped at Busselton to check out the longest wooden piled jetty in the southern hemisphere. It was an amazing 1840 metres in length, now used only for recreation. We explored the beach and its surrounds for a few hours, then continued on to Honeymoon Pool after fuelling up at Busselton Caltex – 81.6L @ 1.489 with a docket. This little camping spot was a gem - $14 unpowered for the night, not far from Wellington Dam; with a beautiful clear stream right in front of our camp. It reminded us so much of the river at Bright – only several degrees warmer in the evening! The next couple of days we spent exploring more of the coast, including Mash ... read more

Pemberton to Margaret River via Augusta This day was to be the day of hell for our quad muscles – as we embarked two vertical climbs above the land, and two massive descents below the ground level. We started at Glaucester Tree – climbing our way up around 200 feet (58 metres), hanging on to the steel pegs that had been rammed in to the side of the tree. These were our steps. No security railing, no nearby hospitals, clearly not safe – but this was the daily walk to work for a fire-spotter before fire planes were in use. Sheree overcame her fear of heights and made it to the top in around 7 minutes, white knuckled but proud as punch. We explored Cape Leeuwin waterwheel and hiked our way up 176 steps to the ... read more

The big 30 and everything after. Hello there blog fans! Wow it’s really been a while since i tapped out a few too many lines to you people, so what better way than to fill you in on my birthday celebrations. As some of you may know i was not thrilled that was about to turn 30. I had so much fun in my 20’s i was scared that i would start craving comfortable shoes, beige & ovaltine by February 4th. My 20’s were a blast, i moved out of home and lived with a guy for the first time, got rid of him and upgraded for my best friend Kate. I can safely say that 2 years with living with Kate included some of the funniest and craziest times of my life. Mark and i ... read more

Tuesday 8th February One of the areas that we had wanted to visit was Margaret River to visit the wineries. Graham had advised us that to see the area in comfort without being in too much of a rush we should take three days, a day to get down there, a day to explore the area, and a day for our return journey. We had booked accommodation at the Margaret Forest Holiday Apartments, we found the place on the net, Graham said we would get a better rate if we phoned, which turned out to be the case. We had booked a car from Hertz when we were out sightseeing the previous day. Graham gave us a lift to the Hertz office in the morning of Monday 8th Feb, and gave us detailed indstructions as regards ... read more

Like a Sandton kugel scraping off her make-up after a late night out, we are slowly starting to shed the skin of city life. The most recent layer to be sloughed is the Volvo. Concerned that its engine and gearbox might not be up to the job, and that it has only a biscuit-like spare wheel, we have abandoned its luxurious interior and bought a Toyota Prado instead. Whereas the Volva was nominally a 4WD, this is more for gravel roads and mounting kerbs in town, not the rocky gullies and river-crossings that are now beginning to fill my thoughts. Having lured Alexa into a caravan, surely it is only one small step now before she is sleeping rough in a swag?? After Geraldton we spent a couple of days in Coorow on the wheat farm ... read more

This morning we went to check out the Margaret river surfing beach. The waves weren’t so good and no one was out surfing. So, we headed to the Aboriginal culture centre. Our guide took us around the bush and showed us all the different uses of the different trees. It was amazing to find out all the medicinal uses of these trees. What I really liked is that instead of killing the trees they just took what they needed from the trees. After the bush walk we got to learn about all the tools aboriginals used. He explained about boomerangs and how they used all kinds of stuff from nature to make knives. It was really cool. He showed us how easily he could make a fire without any matches. That was really cool. He then ... read more
