Rather uneventful day with more driving on tar seal from Fitzroy Crossing to Halls Creek. Camp site overnight was great - Tarunda Caravan Park - with only 8 other punters besides us. Good, clean facilities - nice grassy area (at least in early May). The old couple next door were towing a caravan from Perth to Darwin accompanied by their tabby cat. Dishwashing was made more fun by my bemusement at seeing our neighbour, walking her cat, Misty, on a lead round the campsite. Had to have a chat... apparently it is not that hard to train a cat to go on a leash and the cat also has its own toilet (with a door) that it uses (so much so that she rarely goes anywhere else). ... “cats are very intelligent you know”... had to ... read more

Shared my brekkie with a bird this morning, he ate banana out of my hand then went to see Fitzroy Crossing old town site. Unfortunately the old town which inc. the P.O. and polce station were inhabited and not abandoned as we'd hoped but glad we went anyway as we got to go across this cool little bridge over the Fitzroy river. We then visited Geikie Gorge but unfortunately the walking trails were shut till dry season so after a very yummy tuna sarnie we got back on the road, this time to Halls Creek (about 3hrs). On our way there it rained. The spray coming up from the road trains was amazing and a pebble that one of them sprayed up cracked the windscreen, poor Samantha, as if sh'e not shoddy enough! After leaving Broome behind we know we have large distances to cover now. Its not good that John’s ankle is still sore and, had we been back in the UK he would probably have it strapped up properly and be off it completely. But we’re not so we have to do the best that we can and have to limit his driving to the odd bits here and there when I’m feeling tired. As we arrive at the small town of Fitzroy Crossing we get a sense that we are now well and truly hitting the outback. There are far more aboriginal families about although I get a sense that their communities exist separately from the Australian communities. Its also weird as most of the towns that we are now passing through all have signs either ... read more

We arrived at Halls Creek yesterday afternoon and set up at the caravan park here. It's a bit dusty but then we don't expect grassed sites in these little towns. We had the night before at Fitzroy Crossing where there was lots of grass due to it being on the Fitzroy River. Yesterday morning before leaving Fitzroy Crossing, we did the boat tour on the river to Geike Gorge. The scenery was spectacular, multi-coloured cliffs, many freshwater crocodiles and many birds. On the way to the river to get the tour, we passed three brolgas in a paddock and several wild brumbies. My camera was clicking all morning! Then it was another long drive. One thing about driving the outback, the scenery is changing all the time, one minute it's flat with boab trees, large anthills, ... read more

Had a wonderful ride southwest from Kununurra today. Reminded me of our bicycle rides through Colorado 40 years ago, only better, because there is virtually no development between each roadhouse oasis (one every hundred kilometres) except the occasional herd of Brahma cattle. We rode 4 hours (360 kms) through beautiful red sandstone outcrops, ridges and rolling hills on a two lane road with little traffic. What made it particularly special were the hundreds of giant boab trees and thousands of termite mounds scattered through the grassy, lightly treed landscape. ... read more

Wolfe Creek The road to Wolfe Creek was pretty rough in places but not too bad, it was the Tanami road. The extra suspension in the car is working out a treat. The camp ground at the crater was free, with just a long drop and few trees. The crater itself is pretty spectacular. You can climb the 35m to the rim and it is just awesome. The landscape in the crater is very different to that on the other side. The lushest part is in the middle where a natural salt lake is. Lots of water gathers there in the wet season. Decided not to climb down into the crater, rocks were quite loose in places. We became posh bush campers by having biscuits and cheese at the camp site watching the sun set. It ... read more

We headed off this morning with our earliest start yet. Were up at 7:15, gone by 8:45. Headed up the highway and then turned left onto the Buchannan Highway, towards Top Springs. The road was a dirt road but not in too bad a condition. Hit a few rocks along the way, and what felt like a large rock when we crossed the train line. Turned out it was not a rock after all, but one of the spotlights that fell off. Bruce was not impressed when we stopped a bit further up the road and found the bolts had not been tightened on the where the actual light fits into the frame/back cover of the spotlight, so the glass and lens fell out. The other light was the same with almost all bolts about to ... read more
