Donnybrook Excursion It seems like ages since we were out and about after I damaged my back. While I still have some discomfort, and walking is a little slow, we decided that we would revisit Donnybrook WA and also camp in the Wellington National Park if possible. The night before leaving Marg kicked her little pinkie toe and may have broken it or just plain badly bruised it. So we were both down to a slow pace, though Marg seems to be recovering quickly and I struggle to keep up. We drove across Perth south to Mandurah where we followed the old coast road down to Bunbury where we planned to have lunch on the foreshore. The old coast road runs between the ocean and a large estuary, but by and large neither is visible unless ... read more

After our spell bush camping we drove down to the South West to spend a few days in an Eco-lodge about 20km from the nearest town, Donnybrook. The lodge is completely self sufficient: 12v electrics powered by a solar array and water deliver by a rainwater catchment system. Sounds basic but it all works; main problem is loo and shower are outside. During our first evening Barbara decided to go and put some food in the bird feeder; as she walked down the slope from the lodge she slipped on pea-gravel and badly twisted her ankle. It was clear she was badly hurt so we took her straight to Donnybrook hospital. Over the weekend the hospital has no x-ray facilities so the doctor patched her up with a temporary plaster and recommended that we go to ... read more

Donnybrook – Food & Wine Fest Saturday 4th February, 2012 The Donnybrook Food and Wine Fest was a free event held in the Donnybrook Amphitheatre on the banks of the Preston River. Donnybrook is located in the Geographe region of Western Australia where if you have read our previous Blogs you will recall is the birthplace of the ‘Granny Smith’ apple. The Fest showcases locally produced gourmet food and award winning wines and with all the TV advertising the organisers did, we felt it would be worth going and having a look at. With over 50 stalls and free children's activities, there is something for everyone. Entertainment was provided all day and included a grape stomping competition, waiters race, cooking demonstrations and wine appreciation seminars. There was also a young girl singing country &western and she ... read more

Some days life just comes up apples! That is so true of Donnybrook, home of the Granny Smith Apple. Actually it is quite a smart looking town with I reccon the best bakery in the south west. Just opposite the old Donnybrook railway station (now another good visitor info centre) is a bakery that has FANTASTIC BREAD and VALUE FOR MONEY CUSTARD SLICES for $2.50 ea. Donnybrook also boasts the greatest free children's playground in the world. A very busy haven for young and old complete with BBQs and covered tables etc. We free camped at Iron Rock Falls. Well, there wasn't much water when there so we had iron rock puddles. However, the pools make for interesting reflections with a novel colour shift. The free camp was fun with 5 groups spending the evening in ... read more
