What a week! I began the week a year younger, but come Wednesday I was 29! It was a pretty ordinary day but I could handle that due to my lovely long weekend plans. My Derby friends did take me out for birthday cake and coffee so I did have a nice afternoon and we did win, ok more like thrash the other team at netball that night. As far as school goes, it was my most full on week so far. I definitely needed a rest come Thursday. I used my "Australia Day" holiday day in lou and boarded a plane from Broome to Perth on Friday morning. My wonderful Grandad was there to collect me and it was great to see him. The next few hours were spent catching up with a very pregnant ... read more

Albany to Busselton Our final day in Busselton was quite chilly. No rain but a fierce on shore breeze. We had a ‘chill’ day. Walked around the Middleton area, Eyre Gardens and finally a final walk round Ellen Cove. 21st February was moving day to Busselton. The trip took us along the coast through Denmark & Walpole before cutting inland to Pemberton. Then north to Nannup an interesting little town where we had lunch. The trip was mainly through National Parks and cattle country. After lunch we were only about 80k from our next stopover. Arrived in Busselton at 3.30ish. Temp 34 C, we had left Albany in temp 24C. Trip was over 370k (240 mls) but was on quite windy roads through the parks. Dumped our gear, before heading into Busselton for some food and ... read more

15th October 2010 - Our last day in Perth was spent getting a feel for the city, wandering around the malls and then visiting the Perth Mint. (Even though this is in the same street as the Mall - it is a long walk!) The Perth Mint was quite fascinating. Since WAs wealth has come from the ground it was very interesting to find out about the gold rush. We watched a gold bar being poured. Melted to over 1000 degrees and cool to touch after being cooled down in water for less than 5 minutes!. 16th October 2010 - Packed up the caravan, which is a bit of a chore when getting the annex down but really only 40 minutes of pulling, unclipping and folding. When everyone helps pretty quick. Moved from Karrinyup waters to ... read more

A lovely drive south from Mandurah yesterday with a few little side trips - even managaing to find an Australian National Trust house - Wonnerup- so I could use my UK card here. One of the first settlers here in this area cleared land started a farm and then got speared by an aborigine - but his widow carried on ( as we do !!!) with her 5 children. ...and i think founded a dynasty. A nice little one-teacher schoolhouse had me thinking of times gone by. I was driving through a beautiful forest of Tuart trees (another kind of eucalyptus) the Ludlow National park and the forest floor was covered in white lillies. I was stunned to see so many - and there I am at home with a couple in a pot struggling. But ... read more

Having two days off for Christmas, we decided to go out-of-town and be tourists in our own Western Australia. I booked a room at the Abbey Beach Resort in Busselton and for once, did not prepare any itinerary. I just wanted to relax and go wherever our car takes us Busselton is 220kms south of Perth and takes about three hours by car. We headed out early in the morning of the 24th and after a stop-over at a petrol station, arrived at Busselton before lunch. The roads going to Busselton are very good but boring - just long stretches of road with lots of warning signs such as “Can you still read this?” or “Don’t drive tired. Bunbury cares for you.” or “We want YOU back.”. It was interesting to find a lot of galleries, ... read more

Exmouth, on the top left hand pointy-out bit of WA, was no sweat - it was a relief to have a shower and be able to dry yourself before starting to sweat all over again, it was a joy not to have the van aircon on and an unexpected pleasure to pull up a blanket half way through the night. Fish are the main attraction at Exmouth, either catching them, eating them (thanks again Ian for the wonderful mahi mahi) or watching them in their natural habitat around the Ningaloo Reef. This is the second largest reef in Aus but the best thing is that it’s so close to the coast, sometimes only 100m offshore and we could stand on the rocks and watch reef sharks gliding around just below. But the best was the sightings ... read more

Sat 29th of August 2009 Pinjarra to Bussleton via the Kauri Forest ~ 250km As you know by now Australia is a land of contrast. I was struck yet again by this as I was showering this morning in a motel room in a new establishment. The contrast has to do with ablutions. Even the smallest town in Australia has clean and stocked public toilets. Yet when it comes to plumbing it is something different - a hangover from a colonial past. Even though the mother country (UK) has managed to move on plumbing-wise, Australia still hangs on. Australia has yet to discover the since device that controls both hot and cold water at once. Absolutely everywhere I have stayed over the past two weeks has had a hot and cold tap. Hot is always scolding ... read more
