Yambuk caravan Park is lovely, right on the ocean but a bit protected by the dunes. There's a huge sand slide on the beach side of the dunes, good playground for the kids at the boat ramp which aren't really part of the park but you have to come through the park to get access them so very handy. No good with the fishing, too hot and windy for most of the time so did the tourist thing.Port Fairy is about 20 mins away and very pretty but extremely busy at this time of year, still summer school holidays.Portland is about an hour away heading towards South Australia and a lovely place, used to be a whaling port but thankfully now just cargo but a lot of history regarding whaling. Warrnambool is the largest place around, ... read more

Geo: -38.3855, 142.237FaceTimed Leanne at 9am (10pm on the 29th UK time) who turned her iPhone on Poppie to prove she is alive! Left for Port Fairy, the furthest planned destination on the Great Ocean Rd. Stopped at the London Bridge lookout (more sea rocks!) and despite regular signs advising kangaroos would be crossing, saw only one! Port Fairy was idyllic comprising a low level quiet high street and a river inlet with fishing boats. You could imagine Jessica Fletcher living there.....we agreed that this would be our retirement destination, we loved it...even though there would likely be a high murder rate! We stayed a bit too long before taking the long drive back through Lorne to Torquay (surfers paradise and home to Quick Silver and Ripcurl) and then back to Lara where we stayed with ... read more

Monday April 1st From time to time I have seen traveller's pictures of Port Fairy in Victoria and thought I would love to visit this quaint town. Today we did a half day trip from Koroit and discovered that the settlement was originally called Belfast, so the Irish connection and theme followed again today, but maybe not as obvious as at Koroit. Both towns are in Moyne Shire, and that I think maybe another hint of the Irish settlement of this part of the colony. As we drove into town we noted many old cottages and buildings before stopping at the wharf. I have seen some magic photos here with low light, still water, and reflections setting the mood. Today was cold, windy, occasional showers and not conducive of magical reflections. We walked around the business ... read more

We travelled in-land off the Great Ocean Road to reach the Great Otway National Park. Here we stopped off at the Otway fly, a walkway through the rainforest that takes you up into the highest canopy on raised steel platforms. The layers of the rainforest (that you learn about in geography lessons) really came to life! Our next stop was the Gibson steps that were once hand carved into the cliffs to allow passage onto the beach. Now replaced with safer steps, we were able to get down onto the beautiful beach below. Then we carried on to the most well-known part of the Great Ocean Road, the twelve apostles. Crowds of tourists gather here to get a shot of the pillars - frankly the postcard pictures look much better, so we purchased one of those! ... read more

A warm start to today as the hot weather from Adelaide made its way east. After hitting the road we stopped at more attractions along the Great Ocean Road including The Arch, The London Bridge and The Grotto. All were equally impressive and the chances to see these wonders of nature just add to the experience of driving along this stretch of coast. Around lunch we landed in Warrnambool and after picking up some supplies headed around to the Foreshore Trust Grounds and enjoyed a picnic style lunch by the lake. The warm conditions had brought the punters out and everyone was enjoying the summer weather. After eating we took a walk along the beach and hit the road. We were going to put some kilometres under our belt but only got as far as Port ... read more

Neither of us had expected all that much of Portland but it’s a really nice town! It used to be a whaling and sealing base from the early nineteenth century, a fact that the old whale boiling pot in one of the parks is testimony to… It was also one of Victoria’s earliest European settlements, and rows of plaques adorning stone walls bear the details of settlers’ arrivals along with messages from their descendents. Today, Portland’s main industry is aluminium export. The industrial wharf isn’t exactly pretty but there are still lots of beautiful colonial-era buildings dotted around town. One of these is Bay View House, constructed in 1850 in an alternative Georgian style. Mary MacKillop – Australia’s first saint who lived in Portland from 1862 to 1866 and founded the country’s first religious order – ... read more

Up @ 8.30am to find an enormous continental breakfast for us - a real bonus as we didn't realise that it was included!! A full English at an extra $17/head (£12) was not a viable option!! Lots of sight-seeing today along Great Ocean Rd (12 Apostles, London Bridge, Loch Ard Gorge, etc.). Skies were blue but the wind straight from Antartica was chilly - each stop was a delight!! 12 Apostles coffee shop was , however, a disappointment apart from a photo opportunity with some bikers. After these stops we pushed onto Port Ferry - we're in a delightfully quaint cottage set in a lovely garden and with Alpaccas as neighbours. Our host Doug has left a substantial amount of complementary port for later consumption. Port Ferry itself is very appealing - settler buildings, wide roads, ... read more

Zitat Babsi:'' Oh GOTT!!! ein Kreisverkehr..... read more
