What a fantastic time we have had in Melbourne. Since we last blogged we have been to see the Penguin Parade on Philip Island. The penguins are known as the smallest of the peguin species and there are over 6,000 of them living on the island. They go fishing for food in the sea for 2-3 days during the summer months and they come inland once the sun sets. We opted for the penguin plus experience and watched between 500-1,000 of them huddle together in groups to waddle in shore to feed their babies! Yesterday was fantastic too. We did an unlitmate tour of Neighbours. Firstly we visited Grease Monkeys and Carpenters Mechanics. We then got a tour of Harolds garden/vegetable patch, fllowed by a tour of Lasiters! Here we saw the General Store, Charlies Bar, ... read more

Greetings Friends, I am in my kitchen preparing my first Travel Blog. I am intrigued by this technology and hope that it will be easy to use as I travel. If not, I'll go back to my infrequent emails. Vince bought me a whizbang digital camera from his recent trip to the USA, so hopefully I'll be able to add photos to this journey that I am taking. I have really enjoyed Kate and Ryan's travel blog but I am a bit apprehensive in that they are 'digital natives' and I certainly am a 'digital migrant' so therefore new to this technology. So here goes!... read more

Hi everyone, can you believe we're the other side of the world!! Took a while to sink in. We're in Melbourne, a really neat compact city very easy to get around with lots of free transport - wicked. We've been on a free bus with commentary and a free tram again with commentry - and going different routes - think we should do that in London! Our first backpackers is a pile of croc as they say. Although not a dorm it's a room that hardly fitted us and our luggage in (I know we've got a log of luggage - but you know what I mean). We're going to give backpackers one more try then if I've got anything to do with it then that's it. Tina doesn't seem to mind as much as I ... read more

Interesting day today, 13 hours on a bus, minimal air conditioning, no tv, radio playing Rhianna. Surprisingly good fun though. Yesterday, I arrived in Melbourne early, pratically fell off the bus, so tired, had my now traditional 3 hour power nap before facing the outside world. Had no clue what to look at in Melbourne so wandered round clutching my guide looking lost. Ended up in jail. The old Melbourne Gaol, final resting place of Ned Kelly amongst many others. Have to confess, I went because Billy Connolly went on his world tour and it was the only thing I'd heard of down here. Weird sort of place to open to tourists. The slightly sick element of reading up on everyone's crimes, then seeing the place they all died. They even made death masks for everyone. ... read more

G'day mate, We got the bus from just outside the camp into thecity centre. It took almost an hour but it was a saturday and there are so many sets of traffic lights along the way, your'e stopping every 2 minutes. Our first impressions of just the outskirts of the city was not that great, it looked just like Plymouth! It was no where near as clean or as nice as Adelaide. As we got closer into the city not that much changed, it got bigger with some skyscapers but it still didn't look that nice, well not what we were expecting anyway! We jumped off the tram to go to Victoria market which is a huge thing in the city centre. Everyone seemed to be there! It sold meat, fish, sweets, clothes, souvenirs, fruit and ... read more

Hello folks! Bet you're all glad to hear from us, I can just imagine you all biting your nails, losing sleep, constantly wondering whether we made it to Adelaide or were stranded in the desert living with the Nullarbor Nymph and the kangeroos! (Google it:P) Well it's good news, we did make it to Adelaide and left Western Australia for the first time in a lot of months! We had a few adventures and many more hours of very boring driving - it's a bloody long drive and we did it in 3 days which is nothing for a trucker but a lot of driving hours for poor Ben! Our first 2 days were pretty uneventful, no camel sightings but lots of dead kangaroos - the way the road trains charge down the road at nighttime ... read more

Today was the first morning that Jake and Mia (the 2 year-old twins) had actually made their own way out of their bedroom on their own without the guidance of either Jason or Lisa. Their timing was impeccable; it was Christmas Day. The fun started at around 7:30 a.m. with the kids opening their presents. It would be a typical (but for us, far from ordinary) family Christmas with toys everywhere and non stop eating. Sam and I could both sing the praises of each of our mums when it comes to a plentiful and tasty Christmas dinner but this was different. We were spoilt for choice as the traditional English roast and Australian seafood (courtesy of Lisa and her mum), was fused with other delights brought in by members of Jason’s family who’s origins include ... read more

Easy folks, just thought id let you know that i passed my course and am now looking at figuring out where the hell im going next. I will definitely be going to hong kong, but its unlikely ill work there because im looking at entry level jobs and HK is very expensive..i really dont feel like having to rent a windowless room and living off crisp sandiwiches...so hopefully by the next time i write on this blog, an executive decision will have been made, either try japan/s.korea, or maybe, just maybe, i might chance my arm somewhere in europe. (That does appeal to me when i bear in mind that a certain monkey alan has a stag weekend coming up in 2008). But we'll see, im just glad i passed the course, it was pretty tough... ... read more

Monday 10th December 2007 Well, it's probably not the most original title for a travelblog, but you have to do it... Finally. The day I've been waiting for, the reason for the trip to Melbourne... It's cheesy, but it should be fun! This afternoon is to be the Neighbours Tour, followed by the Neighbours night. I've already decided no internet today, so have a bit of a sleep in (my share-ladies don't seem to really get up til 8ish, so that's not too bad!), then read a book most of the morning, only getting up in time to get dressed, eat some lunch, and negotiate the return of my extra $5 for the Neighbours Night, as Karl isn't playing and it shouldn't cost me more even if he is! Find my pick-up point, not 100% sure ... read more

Hi, just a quick one to let you know that im still plodding on with this course. Its been a bit sketchy this week (i blame this infernal heat), but i seem to have righted things now and am back on track in my bid to teach english swear words to japanese businessmen (you can never know too many ways to say 'leave me alone and stop bothering me'..and we brits have lots of ways to say that) Other than that ive been up to bugger all. There is a guy on the course called darren (need i say more) who has an MA in evangelical minesterism. As you can imagine he is a barrel of laughs, so me and scott ( a lad on the course) try and find ways of winding him up. Scott ... read more
