I know it has been a while since I last wrote, but this work thing gets in the way of travel and life just gets busy. But I am here now so here goes. As a special wedding anniversary fast approaches we knew we wanted to to do something different, so I have been dreaming of long white sandy beaches, turquoise waters, palm trees, long days lolling in the sunshine drinking G&T with the condensation dripping down the side of the glass, sounds like my perfect type of bliss. Well we are not going to get any of that. One night while Andy was out a friend of ours emailed me a video of wombats playing in the snow, and inspiration suddenly struck me, Tasmania, Cradle Mountain. Perfect. I posed the idea when Andy came home ... read more

Launceston. Fri 20th The temperature must have been around 30 degrees today as Tony, Deborah, Bill and myself clambered to the top of the Cataract Gorge. A coffee and vanilla slice soon cured any fatigue as we came back to the cafe and were almost knocked over by a passing Wallaby. Whilst at the cafe we saw a group of people wearing Rotary shirts and it transpired that the local club was hosting some Rotarians from Denmark. Cue for Bill to practice some Danish. We had a good talk to them and exchanged travel information before bidding them farewell. Launceston Rotary Club was formed in 1927 and does a lot of work in the local community, as can be seen by their sponsorship signs at local parks and amenities. Later the waterfront allowed us to catch ... read more

Scottsdale to Launceston 19th After a very unsettled night we had a breakfast of cereal and toast. I had to go out to the garage across the road for some soya milk, otherwise it would be water with my cereal. Unfortunately the hotel was at the top of a very steep hill and timber wagons and other vehicles seemed to be passing at full throttle all night, plus a motorbike kept coming and going at 1am until about 2am. I just think I should have had a look for the plank which must have been put under my bed, as well, but just too tired. However, at 8.15 we were on the road in cow country heading for a 10 kilometre hill at 7-11% and a good viewpoint after 6k overlooking the valley we had left ... read more

Arriving at Port Pier in Melbourne we were 15 minutes to early, the gates to the Spirit of Tasmania were still closed so we turned around and found a parking spot for 15 minutes. Security and quarantine are very tight, they take their quarantine very seriously in Tasmania and both our car and caravan were searched for forbidden fruit and vegetables.Sitting in the queue for over an hour waiting to board and we heard a knock on the window it was the lady driver of the motor home parked behind us and the lady driver had conversed with me on the the net some days previously via the caravan forum, what a surprise that she should be parked behind us waiting to board. We exchanged our thoughts about exploring Tassie although she had the edge on ... read more

On one of our first nights in Tasmania when we were still in Hobart, we started watching The Biggest Loser on television and became inexplicably drawn to this reality TV show. After a week in Tasmania, we may well become contestants. Before I came to Tasmania I had noticed my local supermarket seemed to be sourced entirely from Tasmania. This was one of the reasons I was looking forward to visiting. You can't come to Tasmania and not be impressed with the local produce. Almost without exception, every meal we've had has been delicious, and all locally sourced. At every turn, we stumbled across another epicurean delight. One afternoon on the east coast we visited the Freycinet Marine Park and polished off a dozen oysters - each- just because we could. They had been in the ... read more

Picked up a tough but gas-guzzling 4x4 from Hobart, driving through fire-scarred forests and homes to world-heritage Port Arthur, a 19C penal colony for deported British convicts by a beautiful natural harbour. A fascinating tour to the "Isle of the Dead" graveyard and interactive museum provided brief vignettes of the deportees lives and treatment. Next stop was the wildlife haven of Maria Island, climbed "Bishop & Clerk" mountain for fine views from the vertiginous, rocky summit before racing back to the tree-line ahead of a big storm breaking; found shelter and a very bedraggled Wombat at Darlington penitentiary, and then had a wave-tossed crossing back to the mainland. Headed up the coast to Freycinet National Park for a circular hike to the perfect arc of Wineglass Bay, hiding amongst the rocks from a persistent lunch-snaffling wallaby. ... read more

Warrambool on the south east coast of Victoria was surprisingly quite a large town with a very impressive 5km foreshore promenade bordering the beautiful and sandy Lucy Bay. Pete and I really enjoyed the bike ride there and back as the views are amazing and we think the locals are very lucky to live in such a beautiful area. There are some lovely historic buildings in the towns around south eastern Victoria which have thankfully preserved. It is also quite fascinating to see that this area also has had a lot of volcanic activity with cone shaped hills, huge craters and crater lakes dotted around the place. Many of the lakes contain salt and today we walk of Lake Beeac. What an amazing experience to do and see! We even tasted it! Tonight we are camped ... read more
