After jettisoning some dodgy fruit (which we got from a roadside stall the previous day) at the Quarantine station, we crossed the border of South Australia and it was just a few minutes before we arrived in Mount Gambier. We had to navigate to a supermarket to re-stock on some basics, but then it was off to the Blue Lake. The Blue Lake is Mount Gambiers water supply (in an extinct volcano) and draws many visitors because of its distinct colour. It turns from blue to grey during March / April so it had started to turn, but we took a photo anyway. It is reputed to be over 200 metres deep. While we were there we came across the statue which commemorates the poet, Adam Lindsay Gordon. He was a noted horse handler and rider ... read more

Situated at the end of the long beach that runs all the way North to the Murray mouth, Kingston is yet another tranquil seaside town. The Caravan Park overlooks the beach although a long, wide partially manicured parkland separated us from the water. A strong cool breeze blew in from the sea both afternoons but seemed to moderate by evening. Those caravan awnings that were extended got a good work out. We opted for a park with a sea view, being surprised that many vans were parked with their back to the view. We suspect the occupants were more concerned about protection than the view. Not us. We just roll back our awning if it flaps too much. It was Friday so naturally we needed to find a lunch venue. With a lovely outlook and interesting ... read more

Sunday 7th Yesterday we had a quiet day during which I washed the truck and trailer, did general servicing of the truck making sure all was well, and repacked the trailer for convenience. Marg did a trip to the biggest Woolworths Supermarket she had seen. So, now that we are stocked up, we were ready for the next phase of our journey. We had a beautiful sunset last night to celebrate the end of daylight saving, and headed west today. The plan was to drive from Mt Gambier to Millicent and then along a highway with three coastal salt water lakes. Unfortunately, we missed the key intersection, and took the shorter rout to Kingston SE. The journey was through easy rolling country. Large forests, sheep and beef country, and at Cape Jaffa, some large wineries. We ... read more

We were able to leave Mt Gambier at around 9:10am, not bad considering we are not in a hurry. We set the GPS to take us to Naracoorte, a World Heritage park that contains more limestone caves. The country side we travelled through was flat and beautiful farming areas, with cattle, sheep and grapes for wine. The road was straight and had 110km speed limit, and the Nissan and van tracked along that at a very comfortable pace. We arrived at the cave area at around 10:30am to have a morning tea and book for a tour of the Bat Cave as well as a walk through the time tunnel of the info centre and a self guided tour of the Wet cave. The visit through the time tunnel and the animated creature’s of bygone eras ... read more

28th November 2008 - CHAINSAW MASSACRE CAMP!!! Nat was up at the crack of dawn this moning worrying about being moved on by the council man. I could have slept forever. Was a cold night and I was huddled so tight in the sleeping bag I dreamt about being a pupa and how one day I would turn into a butterfly!!! We had to drive to the nearest petrol station for a wash and teeth clean but soon after we were on the road for what we thought would be a shortish drive. I felt pretty dirty by this point.....no shower for 3 days!!! Even with washing in sinks, fresh clothes and deoderant I still felt grimy. Luckily for us we had decided to stay in a campsite every third night and tonight was night number ... read more

Just some random pics from our weekend jaunt to Kingston - yes, it's a little eerie to spend my first weekend back in Australia in Kingston. Famous for it's giant lobster, Kingston is a region full of sun-soaked seaweed beaches and the world's best fish and chips. Enjoy!... read more
