Six years I have been walking the trail and I am not half way to the end yet, still as I get further away from Adelaide logistics get more difficult. Today we completed a section of the trail heading north out of Burra, a town we have come to know so well and love having used it as a base a number of times in recent years. Ruth and I left home at 6 am driving around two 2 hours, placing a vehicle at each end of the trail we would traverse that day. The sixteen kilometre walk from the Wandallah Homestead in to historical town of Burra was tough due to the unexpectedly hot weather and the many hill climbs that we would have to complete that day. Initially we headed south a long a ... read more

We suddenly found ourselves free of a commitment and made the impulsive decision to head off to the central Queensland coalfields to visit Tristan and Zoe. But wait… we better do some repairs on the caravan first. So off to Adventura we went with a list. Of course they would be able to complete this in two weeks! No pressure, not for us anyway. And deliver they did. Sporting a brand new stone guard with super strength catches we felt confident our wind deflector would be able to be used to help us save on fuel costs. House sitters were contacted and they eagerly accepted. Packing and shopping was done. The relaxed organisation became for frantic when we received a call to say that the caravan would be available in two hours – half a day ... read more

We are on a ‘mission’ to get across to the Head of Bight to see the Whales so our trip leads us out of Mildura to Renmark passing lots of citrus, grape (both wine and table) as well as more Almonds and other fruit orchards along the way. What an amazing country…just add water and everything changes, you just need the water (licence) and the where with all to pay for it!...oh a market to sell the produce into helps as well!! Across into SA we head via Berri on to Waikerie where the local footy side was taking on Loxton. This corner of SA I think you could spend quite some time in based from a park on the Murray at Paringa. Wineries, cafes, foodies, scenery..it is all here in one tight little corner; this ... read more

This day was Joan’s birthday! We headed to Burra to celebrate and this would also be our final night in the caravan before arriving back at the Barossa to store our van. Leaving Broken Hill feral goats were everywhere. Flocks were larger, closer to the road and showed little concern for the vehicles flying by. It is obvious the goats are more road savvy than many of the other animals that frequent the roadside as they just don’t appear as road kill. They are definitely smarter than kangaroos, which stupidly see fast moving vehicles as an invitation to race them, crossing the road before the vehicle gets there. We all know who generally wins. As the land became drier and more desolate so the number of goats decreased. Eventually emus became more prevalent, but thankfully stayed ... read more

http://www.travelblog.org/Admin/Blog/gmap-entry.php?diary_id=60524 Arriving just on lunchtime, we indulged ourselves by dining at the Indonesian Restaurant in Burra. A beautiful chicken curry and spicy king prawns were all we really needed. The banana lemon honey fritter and coconut pandan fritters in a spicy palm sugar sauce tempted us further. And meant another hot afternoon walk was required to offset this indulgence. Of course we didn’t rush into this. An extended and very informative chat with the host of the AGL wind farm information centre was followed by a tasting at the Apple Cidery and then a walk/drive through the old mine site and round the town. With limited time we have come to the conclusion we should visit Burra again … another caravan trip! This was our final night of the trip so we celebrated with steak and ... read more

Well we woke this morning to the chirping of the birds. We had a great sleep in our new accomodation for the next 4 weeks. We drove past Hallett on our way to Broken Hill and saw all the Windmills that Eric has had put up and hasn't let Pete know about coming up to have a look at one being lifted into position. That is why we don't like you Eric! We arrived at Broken Hill about 2.00pm. We didn't take long to put up the van and we were off! We went out to Silverton and went to this great art gallery. We then took a look at the Silverton pub and the cars that were used in the Mad Max films. We headed back to BH for a coffee at the lookout. Had ... read more

We are wetter, colder but definitely wiser after our week in Burra. The town is a time capsule: late 1800s and early 1900s blue stone buildings dominate the town and surrounds and the streets are lined with old eucalyptus trees. There has also been little change to many of the shop fronts in the last 60-80 years. So how did we spend our week? The Burra heritage route took up some mornings and afternoons. There is a lot of history here; the mines, early commerce, smelting works and local agriculture. The Burra mine itself, originally an underground mine, was changed to open out cut in late 1870s, then re-opened briefly in the late 1900s. There is little left of the extensive stone buildings of the mine and the smelter; most ofthe stone has made its way ... read more
