Day 92 - The most talked about islands...did it meet our expectations and did it top Fraser island? Yes! Well they are totally different in their own ways but it was another breathtaking trip. We had a great boat run by a family, with great non stop food and a great skipper called Phil. This trip was one of the best! The Mantaray was the name of the boat. The trip involved the fantastic and famous Whitehaven beach, Mantaray island where we snorkelled and an a long walk to the look out point over Whitehaven beach. The photos dont do it justice as you have to see it to believe Whitehaven beach, the contrast of colours, shades of blue and white sand cover the whole beach area with swirly patterns. Scientists recently studied the sand here ... read more

There are a myriad sailing cruises departing for the Whitsundays from Airlie Beach every day, many of which fall into the categories of "party boat" (i.e. crammed full of drunken backpackers getting even drunker) or "future submarine" (i.e. of dubious seaworthiness). Not wishing to end up on a member of either of these categories, I carefully chose a boat called "Dreamcatcher" that held a maximum of 14 people and had a reputation for sedate travel. In fact I'd been warned it was viewed as a couples' boat, but at check-in I was told half the guests had booked individually, which suggested I wouldn't be the lone gooseberry. It would have been good to have undertaken a dive or 2, but all the likely-looking diving boats were departing several days into the future, and I'd already determined ... read more

Hi All and welcome to the latest installment! I've been working on South Molle Island for a month now and having an absolutely great time. The island is so beautiful and the people i work with are great fun. Laura and I have now been travelling together for 2 months but it seems like i've known her forever, plus my German skills are improving every day (although mostly rude words!). Our lovely French friend Matthieu left last week so we had the superheroes party as his farewell. What a good laugh it was - there was lots of real superheroes plus lots of other home-made costumes. I think my favourite had to be the incredible hulk. Chris put green body paint everywhere and it was even funnier the following day when he couldn't get it off! ... read more

We got to the resort at Long Island last night. It's beautiful. Palm trees everywhere with parrots flying in between the tree tops and wallabies hopping around eating the grass- they're so cute! Dinner was great- I had shrimps and peeled them all by myself- impressive or what?! Had them with lemon and tartare sauce- very tasty! Also had salad, garlic ciabatta and some spanish mackeral. We had a few glasses of wine then decided to hop in the jacuzzi! It was great. The pool has got bar stools under the water so you can get served drinks while you're in there- something I have to try before I leave! Today I went on a bush walk- just me and kate. We thought we would be on a guided walk but the guy showed us the ... read more

Did a 3-day sailing trip on the 'Mollo' - a sailing catamaran, around the gorgeous Whitsunday Islands, a group of 74 islands. There were only 7 of us on a boat meant for 14 so had 2 bedrooms to myself and more than enough deck space for tanning! Had 3 meals a day cooked for us, so all we had to do was literally lie back, relax and enjoy the non-stop amazing views! Was a really relaxing trip, sailing and lying around on deck, stopping at gorgeous little islands or little bays to snorkel or dive. Only got to do 1 dive but the snorkelling was also great - absolutely beautiful coral. The highlight was definitely the hill top view of the famous Whitehaven Beach - white sands swirled into the bright clear turquoise ocean - ... read more

Hi All I've got a new job on a lovely Island just off the east coast. It's one of the Whitsundays and it's called South Molle Island. See www.southmolleisland.com.au if you want to check it out. I'm working in housekeeping which is pretty damn hard in this heat and it's only going to get hotter as the australian summer starts! Cleaning toilets and bedrooms is never glamorous but it's fine for the moment and not bad in this cool location. The people are all very friendly and there is lots of sports to do when you're not working - sailing, tennis, bush walking, basketball, lazing on the beach or drinking! Thursday is a big night out and everyone does Karaoke - i usually hate this but i did have a go last week in a group ... read more

Hello All I've just finished 3 weeks working as a hostess on a private chartered boat in the Whitsundays and Great Barrier Reef!!!! It's a fishing boat and along with Laura our job is housekeeping, assist with cooking and generally be nice to the customers. We had our own cabin on the boat and got all food plus the chance to go fishing again. The rest of the crew were Marco & Lynn (owners), Todd (skipper and complete lunatic) and Matt the deckhand. We stayed for 2 private charters - a 3 day tour for young guys who work in the mines and a 6 day charter for slightly older guys from New South Wales. Both trips were pretty good fun but completely different. the best bit about the job is meeting australians - usually it's ... read more

In the morning Wally and Ann Marie picked us up in their lovely rental car and we set off on the long journey from Hervey Bay to Airlie Beach. We stopped for lunch along the way but other than that Wally drove straight through. When the light started to fade we all became a little apprehensive about the Kangaroos. We had been told not to drive at dusk or dawn due to the high numbers of ‘Roos. So we all had our eyes peeled but we did not even see one the whole way!! Thank you once again guys for the lift, was fully appreciated! Wally and Ann Marie dropped us off at the hostel we had booked through the travel agent in Sydney at the start of our Oz adventure. The moody woman behind the ... read more
