We took to relaxing for the morning and went for a swim in the pool. In the afternoon, we headed to Hartley's Crocodile Experience for an adventure. There were freshwater and saltwater crocs and other wildlife. There was also a boat ride into croc infested waters. They fed the crocs right beside the boat. It was very exciting. We also learned a lot about Koalas and got to pet one. Tomorrow, we will get a camper van and try a new adventure. ... read more

I surfaced at nine and once again, it's another beautiful day. I caught the early bus into town and once there, I proceeded to purchase a return bus ticket to Palm Cove. Public transport actually seems pretty reasonable pricewise and enroute, we encountered the Tapukai Aboringinal Centre... a useful piece of information especially as it saves me $10 doing it my way!! Palm Cove is a lovely beach area, complete with Palms (obviously) Jelly Fish, and other uninvited marine life if the red danger flags were anything to go by...crikey seems an appropriate word somehow!! It was really nice just to sit down, relax and read my book for a while, however, whilst I was engrossed in the antics of Avery and Matt...I was burning (yep, a job for the Trumpton Fire Brigade me thinks) and ... read more

An early start to catch a flight to Cairns, via a transit stop in Gove. Gove is an airport, where the gate means the gate - quite literally access to the plane is through the gate in the fence. Baggage collection is not that hitec either, consisting of placing your bag on a trolley. As with most of the disproportionately large airfields in the area, Gove is a relic of WW2 and seeing as the journey to reach it along the mostly unsealed Central Arnhem Road is 430 miles from Katherine the airport makes a handy shortcut. We were looking forward to luxury accomodation in the upmarket beach retreat of Palm Cove, just north of Cairns. The north of the river backpackers “hospitality” car was available as arranged at Cairns International - a snappy 4 litre ... read more

I, Ben, have arranged flights to return to Australia after visiting New Zealand and Fiji, where I intend to tour back down the East Coast from Cairns to Brisbane by bike! It is a trip I had been planning only a short while after arriving into Australia, and one which several backpackers have encouraged me to do for charity - so I am - for the UK children's charity "Whizz-Kidz"! I ordered a bike online which arrived slightly late in Cairns due to the public holiday in Australia for the Queen's Birthday, but once it did I was able to get out and about exploring the nearby area as far as Gordonvale in the South and Palm Cove in the North, a good test of the slightly out-of-practice legs it must be said! My almost 2,000km ... read more

Fri 15th: Palm Cove - Day at Cairns Zoo Up early and we went straight to Cairns Tropical Zoo. Saw a few animals, especially the walk through aviary and fed the kangaroos first and then went to see the Snake show where we learned what to do if you get bitten (it differs from continent to continent), and saw a snake-eating snake. Leanne touched one, but Matt remembered what the Cobra in Thailand felt like - cold clammy rubber is how a snake feels. The next stop was the Bird show which showed Cuckatoo’s, eagles and a few others. Followed by a Koala show. Koala’s are boring and rubbish, and they smell, and they are ugly, and they are on Matt’s ‘Should be extinct’ list. The babies are jellybean sized and stick on the mum’s ... read more

On boxing day we went down to the coast to a resort called Palm Cove, similar to Port Douglas but we had a hotel there and we stayed for 4 days. The place was pretty smart with a massive beach again with the fenced off stinger nets. We slopped straight down to the pool to get some decent sun and cold lagers. The hotel rooms were ridiculously big with hot tubs on the balconies and living rooms and kitkens attached... however there was a down side that the ensuite bathroom only had frosted glass and not a proper wall which lead for some horrible lagered up sights for the person who wasn't in the shower (see picture below). The weird thing about palm cove was that all of the buildings had been built around the trees ... read more

The Build-up Lindsay -Only three days until the Big Day, and despite all my best efforts there still seems to be a ton of things to do to try and attempt a perfect wedding. Anyway having a lot to do is keeping me occupied and distracted, if not exactly calm about the things I can‘t do anything about. Like the weather for example. Every morning I watch the sun come up, hoping to actually see some sky. Unfortunately it is to drizzle and grey clouds, which is adding to my increasing worry that I have made a terrible mistake by thinking I could get away from it all for a quiet (stress-free) wedding. And another major worry I’m trying to not think about, and that Russell doesn’t really get, is the myriad of sandfly bites that ... read more

Next stop was the coastal village of Palm Cove, just north of Cairns. We stayed at the massive Novotel Palm Cove Resort, which was about as far removed in style and ambience from the laid back peace and quiet of Great Keppel Island as it was possible to get. The tennis courts, large gym, and golf course with its attached pro shop were a bit wasted on us - the parents of three youngsters under eight. Our only prerequisites were a Kids Club and a pool. We didn't think it was compulsory to get around the resort's jogging track at a satisfactory pace every morning and then follow it up with a brisk 18 holes, but given the numbers of our fellow guests who seemed to be doing exactly that it was hard to be sure. ... read more
