A short trip to Peel Island
Published: May 14th 2013Oceania » Australia » Queensland » North Stradbroke IslandWoke to more rain. When it cleared, motored into the northerly wind and an hour later we were at Horseshoe Bay, Peel Island. S27 30.212 E153 21.813 A good chance to properly test if the autopilot followed a waypoint on the chartplotter and it worked well. Not as far as we would have liked to have got but a lovely place to stop in a northerly wind, and we even had some sunshine. We have been here before but never with it so quiet, with only one other boat in the bay! Though a few others joined us later. Motored over the clear flat water for a stroll on the beach. Naomi brought her rod and I tagged a small fish but it got away. Heading back to the boat, we pushed the dingy away from ... read more
Relaxing at Blaksley Anchorage
Published: May 13th 2013Oceania » Australia » Queensland » North Stradbroke IslandWoke to rain and it continued for most of the morning so decided to stay put and relax, and get this blog up to speed with some old entries. Naomi made pumpkin scones. When it did settle, there wasn't a puff of wind and the bay was like a mill-pond. Discovered the speaker for the VHF isn't working- will put that on the "to do" list. Went for another beach stroll.... read more
Day 2 - leaving the GC and entering Moreton Bay
Published: May 12th 2013Oceania » Australia » Queensland » North Stradbroke IslandMother's Day, and Naomi was woken with breakfast in bed. Left Tipplers at about 8:30, motored to Jacobs Well, taking in the last view of the Gold Coast's high-rises, and then sailed up the Main Channel with some rain and gusts but overall a lovely sail that took us up to Moreton Bay. Naomi baked scones along the way for morning tea. Pulled into Blaksleys Anchorage (North Stradbroke Island) which is in the south east corner of Moreton Bay S27 34.605' E153 24.530' Just in time for lunch and a chance to for Naomi to try out her new PS Vita - her new escapism device for when she gets sick of me! When Alex woke, went for a stroll on the beach, which by now was deserted and we were the only boat in the ... read more
Planet Earth meets Stradbroke Island
Published: August 23rd 2011Oceania » Australia » Queensland » North Stradbroke IslandSome choose to spend the Queensland public Ekka holiday at the show grounds and others choose to travel over to Straddie and experience the golden sands and deserted beaches instead. Guess what we decided to do? We were fortunate enough to have a complimentary two night stay at our favourite residential accommodation at Home Beach so left work early and caught the 5pm ferry and enjoyed watching the sunset over Moreton Bay as we travelled the 45 minute crossing and went into instant relax mode. We had recently changed our car and bought a Toyota Landcruiser 4WD so that we could experience off road driving and explore more of the Australian outback on future holidays. So with a permit to drive on the beach and a tide timetable we planned to explore Main and Flinders Beach ... read more
North Stradbroke Island
Published: May 31st 2011Oceania » Australia » Queensland » North Stradbroke IslandRick and Robin decided to take me to their house on the nearby North Stradbroke Island the day before my last day in Australia. They really went out of their way to take me since my flight was at 2:00 pm the following day. Rick had looked up the times of the flights to Turkey and assumed mine was the later one, I felt bad to correct him to tell him I had to be at the airport at noon and said that I completely understood if we couldn’t make it over there, but he insisted we go. I was so tired from the non-stop adventure that I had experienced ever since I set foot in Brisbane that I went to sleep in the car on the way over on the barge. After I awoke Rick ... read more

Landbased whale watching on North Stradbroke Island
Published: July 12th 2010Oceania » Australia » Queensland » North Stradbroke IslandIn the winter of 2008, more than 10000 Southern Humpback whales were spotted off the headland at Point Lookout. Their numbers are slowly but steadily increasing with each season, and this is testament to our adjusted thinking and understanding regarding these magnificent creatures. Recent reports indicate that in the 2009 season their number had increased to around 12000, and the 2010 season promises to draw that number closer to 14000. The humpbacks haven't always had such a carefree time in our recent past because up until the early sixties there was a whaling station very nearby that almost brought them to the brink of extinction in these waters. In 1962, at the end of a ten year killing spree, the whaling station at Tangalooma on Moreton Island ceased to operate. The reason was simple, their Norwegian ... read more
The Brown Lake
Published: February 28th 2010Oceania » Australia » Queensland » North Stradbroke Island2/26/10 I just finished my first week of work at Tiffany & Co. in Sydney. I thought I’d be doing the same thing as in the states but turns out there’s not much to do. The US call center is the only place that can Australia orders over the phone, we don’t have access to any records for returns, repairs, orders, etc and none of the stores ever answer their phones. So basically all I do, along with one other girl, is tell customers if a store has something in stock, transfer calls to what is usually an answering machine at a store or when the customer gets really pissed keep calling different extensions till someone finally picks up. Oh and none of the stores have direct lines, they all go to us…imagine trying to explain ... read more

But the restaraunt is fancy so i have these stricked giuldlines to follow and it seems like I keep messing them up, but im slowly learning. Me and jason were lucky enough to get invited to go out to the christmas party, which was all inclusive...including drinks, which then leads to me drinking to much wine haha We ended up leaving without saying bye to anyone lol i dont think anyone really noticed. We went to the realllllly good indian resteraunt and im not sure if it was so good because it was good or because i was drunk lol BUT i really enjoyed myself. Then for a day we went ... read more

Moreton Bay/North Stradebroke Island ('Straddie)
Published: March 24th 2009Oceania » Australia » Queensland » North Stradbroke IslandG'day from another awesome week in Australia! This past week has been a busy one, but definately fun, especially towards the end! As we all know St. Patricks Day was this past Tuesday the 17th and of course we want to go out and celebrate. The day is not big here in Aussieland, but is still celebrated somewhat. So we got into our green gear and went out to a bar called 'Down Under Bar', clever name right? It was absolutely packed and literally couldn't move! It was definitely a fun night, but will not compare to St. Patricks Day celebrations back in Dublin, Ireland two years ago. This past Thursday the 19th, I went on a field trip for the day to Brisbane Forest Park. This trip was with my BIOL2001 class or Australia's Terrestrial ... read more
